A Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pandur II 8 x 8 armoured personnel carrier, fitted with a CMI Defence CT-CV 105 mm turret, has been tested at the Portuguese Army's Campo Militar de Santa Margarida (CMSM) military training facility.
The tests, conducted from 17 to 20 December 2007, validated the integration of the CT-CV advanced weapon system on the Pandur II, the mobility of the vehicle with the turret and the firepower and accuracy of the 105 mm calibre gun to Portuguese military representatives.
Three Pandur IIs have already been delivered to the CMSM for driver training courses ahead of the official delivery of the first vehicles to the Portuguese Ministry of Defence (MoD), which are planned for early 2008. This new round of CT-CV tests on the Pandur II follow previous ones carried out in Austria during late October 2007. The CT-TV two-person turret has been developed as a private venture by CMI Defence and has already undergone extensive trials on other 8 x 8 chassis.
The Portuguese MoD plans to make a final decision about its option to buy 33 Pandur II vehicles equipped with a 105 mm turreted Mobile Gun System before June 2008.
Another contender for the Portuguese order is Oto Melara with the 105 mm HITFACT 105/L52 low-recoil turret system. An Oto Melara representative told Jane's that the company is carrying out technical discussions with Steyr to detail the electrical and mechanical interfaces for the HITFACT turret installation on the Pandur II and the two companies are considering the need to complete mobility and firing trials of the system.
