The $400 million, 442-foot-long warship was returning from NATO's massive, multinational Trident Juncture military exercise when it collided with the 820-foot-long tanker.

A Norwegian rescue official said at the time of the collision that the frigate was "taking in more water than they can pump out. There is no control over the leak and the stern is heavily in the sea."

According to a preliminary report released at the end of November 2018, control of the frigate's rudder and propulsion systems was lost, which caused the ship to drift toward the shore, where it ran aground about 10 minutes after the collision.

Norway’s new support ship HNoMS Maud starts journey home


The Royal Norwegian Navy’s new logistics and support vessel HNoMS Maud is en route home after getting underway from Busan, South Korea, where it was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).

The ship started her journey home on Sunday, after being accepted by the navy from DSME in November 2018.

Next stop on HNoMS Maud’s transit to Norway will be San Diego. Should everything go according to plan, the vessel will arrive in Norway by March.

Once in Norway, HNoMS Maud will be outfitted with defense-specific equipment, self-defense weaponry and communications systems. The vessel and her crew are expected to be fully operational by 2020.

Named after Queen Maud of Norway, the new ship will be the largest vessel ever operated by the Royal Norwegian Navy and will replace HNoMS Valkyrien which served as the navy logistics vessel until 2016.

Based on BMT’s scalable AEGIR platform design, which it shares with the larger Royal Navy Tide-class tankers, the 26,000-tonne logistics and support vessel is fully winterized, has a helicopter flight deck and hangar, and a 48-bed hospital capability.

Maud will be used by the navy to provide fuel and fresh water for other units at sea. It will additionally support allies and take part in international and humanitarian missions.

O chefe do EMA diz que ter AOR + NPL é melhor que ter apenas 1 JSS (ok, posso entender) e que 1 JSS é mais caro que a dupla... talvez.

Mas continuo que, na pelintra marinha que temos, 1 único deste estilo era o caminho, em especial com estas características:

El informe preliminar de la comisión asegura que el fallo estaría relacionado con la “estanqueidad” de la Helge Ingstad y podría repetirse en las cinco fragatas construidas en la primera década de este siglo por Navantia para la Marina noruega por unos 1.050 millones de euros. La comisión sostiene que el fallo “no está en conformidad con el estándar de estabilidad contra daños requerido” y asume que “eso afecta también a las otras cuatro fragatas de la clase Nansen”, de 5.300 toneladas y 143 metros de eslora.

La estanqueidad de los compartimentos garantiza que, en caso de abrirse una vía de agua, esta no inunde el resto del buque, provocando su hundimiento. Según un anexo al informe preliminar, la inundación afectó a tres compartimentos (el cuarto de generadores de popa, los camarotes de la tripulación en cubierta y los almacenes). Inicialmente, la tripulación creyó que el buque podría mantenerse a flote, pero al advertir que el agua caía desde el cuarto de generadores al de engranaje por el hueco de las hélices y que este se inundaba rápidamente, optó por la evacuación.

Me resulta muy llamativo que las lanchas de desembarco españolas no se hundan y si lo hagan las australianas, que tengan problemas los LPD y el español navegue con normalidad. Quizá se deba a que estan en el hemisferio sur.

Y que se vayan preparando para cuando les entreguen los 2 AOR en construcción, quizá se hundan antes de llegar a Australia, es lo mas probable.

Este AOR Norueguês era uma excelente aquisição para a nossa Marinha.
A capacidade deste navio em termos de transporte adicional de pessoal, para + 116 pessoas, quase uma FFZ, e uma unidade hospitalar para até 48 pacientes, são sem sombra de dúvida duas excelentes mais valias para um navio desta classe e teriam muitíssima utilidade para a nossa MdG servindo de NPL até á chegada do D. Sebastião/Adamastor.
Por 130€ milhões um navio novo com estas capacidades seria um excelente negócio, quanto a mim era de aproveitar e encomendar já um igual, mas para ser construído por cá !!!

Operation to lift sunken Norwegian frigate gets underway

The Royal Norwegian Navy’s sunken frigate HNoMS Helge Ingstad is ready to get out of the water after spending over four months on the sea bottom in the Hjeltefjorden fjord.
As informed by Norway’s defense ministry, weather conditions and forecasts have finally allowed for the operation to start.

HNoMS Helge Ingstad was involved in a collision near Bergen on November 8, 2018. The ship initially spent several days on its starboard side with a significant portion of its body above the waterline before almost completely sinking on November 13.

The navy expected it would lift the frigate and transport it to the Haakonsvern base within three weeks.
Some three months later, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, heavy lift vessels Rambiz and Gulliver are on site and have begun lifting the frigate onto a barge for her transport to the navy base.

HNoMS Helge Ingstad is expected to be onboard the submersible barge “Boa barge 33” by Thursday or Friday, the navy said. The entire operation is expected to be completed by the end of the weekend.
The schedule of the delicate operation could still be affected by the weather, the navy noted.
