Leonardo has reaffirmed plans to upgrade the avionics and engines of five AgustaWestland WG.13 Super Navy Lynx Mk 95 helicopters operated by the Portuguese Navy.
The company said on 13 July that the contract to undertake this work will be signed "in the coming few weeks". The Portuguese Ministry of National Defence (MND) disclosed in March that it is to spend EUR69 million (USD76 million) on the upgrade so as to extend the aircraft's service life, address airworthiness obsolescence issues, and to meet new European flight standards due to come into effect in 2018.
The Portuguese Navy's five Super Lynx helicopters comprise three newbuild aircraft, and two ex-Royal Navy Lynx HAS.3 airframes remanufactured to the Mk 95 standard and delivered from 1993. The helicopters operate from the Vasco da Gama- and Bartolomeu Dias-class frigates in the anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, search-and-rescue, special operations transport, and utility transport roles. With the upgrade work, the navy plans to retain these helicopters in service through to 2030.
