> Due to the risk of the F126 project being canceled or further delayed, the Ministry of Defense is pursuing a parallel approach: the procurement of MEKO A-200 DEU class frigates from Germany's largest naval shipbuilder, TKMS. To this end, the ministry intends to conclude a preliminary agreement with TKMS so that the company can take all necessary measures to ensure production.

> Around €50 million is to be made available for the preliminary agreement in a first step. If the preliminary agreement is not followed by a final construction contract by March 31, the term of the preliminary agreement is reportedly to be extended to April 30. This date also marks the end of the deadline by which a decision must be made on a change of general contractor and thus on the continuation of the F126 procurement program. The funds are intended to ensure that production slots are reserved at the participating companies, materials and long-run parts are ordered, and the design plans are finalised.

> If the preliminary agreement is extended, a further €100 million will be due – after all, the MEKO project will already be at progressed stage by then. The budget includes funds for up to eight MEKO A-200s as an alternative to the F126. However, these eight ships could only be commissioned if the F126 project is terminated. At least four MEKO frigates could be ordered as a stopgap solution if the F126 project is continued but further delays occur. The preliminary agreement is intended to ensure that the first MEKO will be delivered to the German Armed Forces in December 2029. Physical work should commence immediately after the preliminary agreement has been signed.
