Scolari sabía como jugarle a Holanda, con presión en el centro y con un ritmo alto de juego para controlar el centro del campo. Además logró también atar en corto a Robben, así como evitar que le llegasen balones a Van Nistelrooy. Portugal se hizo desde el inicio con las riendas del partido, llegó al área rival, creó ocasiones de gol pero no las resolvió con claridad, aunque se delanetó en el marcador, lo cual fue un alivio antes del descanso. La sentencia llegó en el momento oportuno, pues los holandeses intentaron reaccionar, pero Maniche decapitó esa opción.

Portugal cheered an entire nation as the hosts reached the Euro 2004 final with a merited 2-1 victory over a disappointing Holland side at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first half header and Maniche's wonderful goal after the break rewarded Portugal with the statistical superiority their dominance deserved before Jorge Andrade's own goal handed Holland a route back into the match.

But the Dutch only sporadically pressured their opponents' defence in search of an equaliser as Portugal hung on to become the first hosts to reach the European Championship final since France in 1984.

A cagey opening to the semi-final saw Portugal dictate the tempo as Deco's cross was just too high for the returning Pauleta while a delightfully teasing ball in from Figo narrowly evaded the outstretched leg of Ronaldo.

Holland were playing in fits and starts, with Arjen Robben a lightweight threat on the left and Marc Overmars failing to receive enough of the ball on the right despite having the pace to outrun Nuno Valente.

Philip Cocu scuffed a low shot from distance wide but it was Portugal who showed attacking verve with Figo bursting down the left flank before rolling the ball back for Ronaldo who shot straight at Edwin van der Sar.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was living off scraps in the Oranje attack and, when he had a brief glimpse of goal, he was snuffed out by the impressive Ricardo Carvalho.

On 26 minutes, Portugal deservedly took the lead after capitalising on a shocking piece of defending by the Dutch after Ronaldo had forced Michael Reiziger in to conceding a corner.

Deco whipped in the set-piece in to the middle of the goal and Ronaldo merely had the simple task to plant a header past van der Sar with his supposed marker, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, standing still.

The teenage winger's moment of joy was soured, though, when referee Anders Frisk waved the yellow card after Ronaldo took off his shirt to celebrate his second goal of the tournament.

The Dutch then enjoyed their best period of the first half when Overmars blasted a volley over the bar after Edgar Davids' cross was headed in to the night sky.

Davids was the architect again moments later when he flashed in another dangerous cross but Clarence Seedorf's near post header was crucially deflected wide by Jorge Andrade.

Holland were then indebted to van der Sar for keeping them in the game after van Bronckhorst was exposed again. Deco lofted a superb ball in to the run of Maniche down the right and his centre was turned goalwards by Pauleta but the off-form striker's shot was smartly pushed away by the Dutch keeper.

The Oranje did have the ball in the net on 39 minutes after Overmars slipped in van Nistelrooy to finish past Ricardo but the Manchester United hit-man was marginally offside, with the Barcelona winger booked in the aftermath for protesting to the linesman.

The moment of the first half arrived on 41 minutes when Figo, who clearly showed no signs of sulking after being substituted against England, took on the baton, previously carried by Deco and Ronaldo, to tease and torment van Bronckhorst.

The Portugal captain chested the ball down before zipping in to the area and creating a half-yard of space to curl a magnificent shot which rebounded back off the post, much to the dismay of the partisan crowd.

Dick Advocaat opted to replace Overmars with Roy Makaay at half time while Portugal were wondering how comfortable the match could be if they had a sharper forward than Pauleta.

Deco spreadeagled a static Dutch defence on 54 minutes with a raking long pass through to Pauleta but the Paris Saint Germain ace smashed his effort straight at van der Sar when he should have made it 2-0.

Fortunately for the hosts, that was the scoreline four minutes later when Maniche scored arguably the goal of the tournament.

He collected a short corner from Ronaldo and, from the corner of the box on the left, curled a breathtaking shot into the top corner past the despairing dive of van der Sar, who was quickly back on his feet to berate the sloppy nature of Holland's rearguard action once again.

Van Bronckhorst finally made a positive contribution on 63 minutes when his cross enabled Holland to grasp a lifeline after Andrade sliced the ball over his stranded goalkeeper Ricardo to suddenly put Portugal on the back foot.

A revitalised Holland almost snaffled an equaliser midway through the second half when Seedorf's free kick was missed by Cocu at the near post and, agonisingly so, by van Bronckhorst at the far post.

Either side of Petit and Nuno Gomes coming on for Portugal, Chelsea-bound winger Robben was deservedly booked for diving for trying to con Swedish arbiter Frisk for the umpteenth time, with his misfortune capped by being replaced by Pierre van Hooijdonk inside the final ten minutes.

In the last minute of injury time, Deco should have settled the contest only to be denied by van der Sar but it mattered little as Frisk sent a nation in to ecstasy by blowing the final whistle.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Portugal advanced to the final of a major soccer championship for the first time on Wednesday by beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the semifinal of Euro 2004.

Cristiano Ronaldo headed home a corner in the 28th minute and Nuno Maniche drove a stunning 22-meter strike into the top left corner of Edwin van der Sar's goal in the 58th to put the host two goals ahead before a Jorge Andrade own goal gave the Dutch some hope.

The Portuguese, who lost 2-1 to underdog Greece in the opening game, finally made it to a championship game after semifinal exits at the 1966 World Cup and the 1984 and 2000 Euros.

The Dutch, who won the Euro title in 1988, lost in the semifinal for the second time in a row, having been beaten by Italy four years ago in Rotterdam.

Before 46,679 fans at Sporting Lisbon's Jose Alvalade Stadium, the Portuguese regularly opened up a Dutch defense missing injured veteran Frank de Boer and could have gone into half time two or three goals ahead.

In the ninth minute Luis Figo, who was the main source of the best Portuguese moves and was named man of the match, broke down the right and sent over a low cross but Ronaldo, sliding in just three meters from the goalline, was unable to get his foot to the ball.

But the Portuguese were soon ahead, this time from a corner.

Ronaldo won it on the left, Deco delivered the cross and the teenager was perfectly positioned and unmarked to head home from close range. Ronaldo pulled off his shirt in celebration and was shown a yellow card by Swedish referee Anders Frisk.

The Dutch had a chance to level within a minute but the unmarked Marc Overmars, recalled for his first start of the championship, fired over the bar with an angled 10 meter strike after Edgar Davids' left wing cross had been flicked on.

The Portuguese should have gone two ahead when Deco sent Maniche clear down the right and his low cross found Pauleta in front of goal. The Paris Saint Germain striker, recalled instead of the injured Nuno Gomes, had left his marker and got in a firm close range shot but it was too close to Van der Sar who pushed it round the post.

The Dutch had the ball in the net in the 38th minute but it was ruled offside and Overmars was shown a yellow card for arguing with the linesman.

Five minutes before halftime, Figo again went close when he cut in from the right and fired a leftfooted shot that beat Van der Sar but hit the far post.

Dutch coach Dick Advocaat sent on Bayern Munich striker Roy Makaay for Overmars to give striker Ruud van Nistelrooy more support in the middle.

But Portugal still created better chances and, from another quick break from their own half after Jaap Stam's header had gone straight to Deco, the ball was moved swiftly upfield to Figo. This time the Portuguese captain mis-hit the shot wide.

Another chance came a minute later when Pauleta got clear again but his firmly hit shot was well held by Van der Sar.

Advocaat made another change on 55 minutes, taking off defender Wilfred Bouma and sending on attacking midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

But a second Portuguese goal came within three minutes when Stam's headed clearance at the near post gave the home team a corner. Maniche collected the short corner and unleashed an angled 22-meter shot that flew past Van der Sar and went in off the far post.

There seemed no real danger when Giovanni Van Bronckhorst sent a cross to the box from the left, but Andrade stretched his leg trying to clear it and the ball bounced off his leg and past goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira.

It could have been worse for the home team a minute later when Phillip Cocu and Van Bronckhorst just failed to make contact with a Clarence Seedorf free kick.

Deco should have made it 3-1 in the final minute of injury time when he collected a crossfield ball from Figo but shot straight at Van der Sar.

Dutch fans turn Lisbon into river of orange
LISBON (Reuters) -- Like a river of orange, Dutch fans flooded into central Lisbon on Wednesday, dancing, singing and dressed in their national colours before their team's Euro 2004 semi-final against hosts Portugal.

Buoyed by their penalty shootout victory over Sweden in the quarter-finals, the Netherlands supporters were in confident mood.

"I think we're going to win," Karin de Vries, a 28-year-old sales woman from Epe, the Netherlands. "It won't be easy, but I think we will manage to score one more than Portugal," she said from behind glittery orange sunglasses in Praca Figueira, central Lisbon.

The revellers frolicked in the sun as a band played rap, salsa and other music and an entertainer sang in Dutch.

Orange soccer balls kicked high into the air bounced through the crowd, sometimes knocking over a beer or glancing off a head.

Some of the fans were dressed as Dutch maids or wore fake Dutch braids and clogs. Nearly all wore orange from head to toe and matching hats, ties and other accessories.

A few Portuguese fans enjoyed the scene.

"I like the Dutch. They are good people," said Cecilia de Jesus of Lisbon, her hair painted in the Portuguese national colours of red and green. She wore red and green clothing except for a white apron around her waist.

Most of the supporters were planning to walk the approximately six kilometres (3.73 miles) to the Alvalade Stadium behind an orange bus for the 1945 local time (1845 GMT) kickoff.

"I'm getting a bit nervous. It's going to be a close game tonight," said Ruud Dautzenberg, a 30-year-old technology consultant from Landgraaf.

"It's the first game where there will be fewer supporters from Holland than the other team," he said, wearing a Dutch flag like a cape, his blue eyes contrasted with the orange paint on his eyebrows. "We have to scream louder. We're practising now."

 LISBONA (Portogallo), 30 giugno 2004 - Dopo la battaglia con l'Inghilterra il Portogallo dimostra di meritare ampiamente la finale del "suo" Europeo vincendo in maniera limpida contro l'Olanda. Il risultato finale è di 2-1, ma se fosse stato più rotondo nessuno avrebbe potuto dire nulla. La squadra di Scolari ha impostato bene la partita, ha avuto occasioni a grappoli e, a parte gli ultimi 25' del secondo tempo condizionati dalla paura della "grande beffa", ha sempre tenuto in pugno l'incontro.

LA GARA - L'Olanda preme e il Portogallo segna. Questo volendo sintetizzare agli estremi il succo di quanto si è visto nel primo tempo all'Alvalade. La partita comincia con i tulipani subito all'attacco e il baricentro del gioco decisamente spostato all'interno della metà campo portoghese. Ma è un'illusione ottica. La squadra di Advocaat, infatti, non riesce a produrre nulla di pericoloso, mentre il Portogallo sa come ripartire e colpire in contropiede. Van der Sar se la vede brutta già al 6' quando un cross di Deco diventa un tiro che il portiere olandese è costretto a parare in extremis. Non è che l'inizio. Al 9' è un Figo scatenato (la sua prova è stata ottima) che da destra mette in mezzo un pallone che Cristiano Ronaldo per un soffio non corregge in rete.

L'Olanda cerca la sua strada verso la porta, ma Scolari ha messo bene i suoi: Robben è tenuto a bada da Miguel e la sfida tra Overmars e Nuno Valente è quasi sempre vinta da quest'ultimo. In mezzo Jorge Andrade e Ricardo Carvalho blindano Van Nistelrooy, e il gioco è fatto. Passano i minuti e il Portogallo cresce. Al 18' ancora Figo parte in contropiede sulla sinistra e mette in mezzo per Cristiano Ronaldo: tiro debole, facile presa per Van der Sar. Siamo all'antipasto. Il gol arriva su un "banale" calcio d'angolo. Deco crossa, Cristiano Ronaldo salta, Van Bronckhorst lo sta a guardare e Van der Sar deve raccattare la palla in rete. Ora l'Olanda deve cercare il pareggio e fa ancora di più il gioco di Deco e compagni, e infatti è da questo momento che la squadra di Scolari ha le più clamorose occasioni da gol. Al 35' Pauleta sbaglia l'impossibile a pochi metri dalla linea di porta; al 41' Figo scende sulla destra, si accentra e lascia partire un gran sinistro a rientrare che solo il palo ferma. Si va al riposo su un 1-0 che sta molto stretto al Portogallo.

Si ricomincia da dove si era finito il primo tempo: Olanda in avanti, ma Portogallo molto più pericoloso. Al 9' Pauleta si trova lanciato da solo verso Van der Sar, ma non sa fare di meglio che concludere addosso al portiere. Al 13' ci pensa Maniche a pescare il gol della vita: dall'estrema sinistra lascia partire un destro potentissimo che va a infilarsi a filo del palo alla sinistra di Van der Sar. E' il 2-0 che potrebbe voler dire il colpo del k.o., ma la squadra di casa non ci sta, vuole che lo spettacolo sia degno di tanto pubblico fino al 90'. Capita così che al 18' Jorge Andrade metta il piede su un pallone calciato da Van Bronckhorst e diretto verso Van Nistelrooy. Ne esce una palombella morbida che scavalca l'incolpvole Ricardo. 2-1 e patita riaperta.

Ora l'Olanda pare rinfrancata e il Portogallo imbambolato. Scolari toglie Cristiano Ronaldo e manda in campo Petit, poi mette Nuno Gomes per Pauleta, toccato duro da Davids a centrocampo. Il finale è al cardiopalmo, ma è ancora il Portogallo ad avere il colpo del k.o. (e a fallirlo) ben due volte: al 33' con Maniche che riceve palla in area, ma non riesce a indirizzare il tiro e al 49' con Deco che solo dentro l'area si fa parare il tiro da Van der Sar. Il triplo fischio di Frisk arriva subito dopo ed è il segnale convenuto: che la festa abbia inizio e non finisca prima dell'alba.

Le Portugal, pays organisateur, a enfin vaincu le signe indien. Demi-finalistes de l'épreuve à deux reprises contre la France (1984 et 2000), les Portugais n'avaient encore jamais connu l'ivresse d'une finale. C'est désormais chose faite. Même si la victoire sur les Pays-Bas est courte, la mission est accomplie (2-1). Plus qu'une marche à gravir...

 
Le Portugal entreprenant et récompensé
 
Devant l'engouement et l'effervescence générale, le Portugal, pays hôte, se savait attendu au tournant. Il n'a pas déçu en s'offrant une finale méritée. Mais les Portugais auraient pu s'éviter bien des frayeurs s'ils avaient su tuer le match à plusieurs occasions.

Avec deux jours de repos supplémentaires, le Portugal débute ce match à haute pression en prenant le contrôle du jeu. Les statistiques avec eux, (1 seule défaite portugaise en 9 confrontations face aux Pays-Bas pour 4 succès), les coéquipiers d'un Figo libre et très entreprenant, tantôt à gauche, tantôt à droite, donnent le tournis à la défense Orange. Les Néerlandais ne répondent que par contres, en misant essentiellement sur Van Nistelrooy en profondeur.

C'est finalement sur un corner merveilleusement frappé par Deco que Ronaldo, lui aussi très remuant, donne un avantage mérité aux siens (26e). Etrangement seul aux 6 mètres, délaissé par Van Bronckhorst, le prodige des Red Devils catapulte le ballon d'une tête piquée imparable. Le Portugal respire.

Si les Pays-Bas ont des occasions de recoller au score par Overmars ou Van Nistelrooy, qui voit son but refusé pour un hors-jeu limite, les Portugais s'offrent également quelques situations dangereuses. Figo, encore lui, voit ainsi sa frappe parfaitement enroulée du gauche mourir sur le poteau.


 
Pauleta hors-sujet, Maniche en pleine confiance
 
Malgré un Pauleta encore une fois hors-sujet et en plein manque de confiance, le Portugal aggrave le score par l'excellent Maniche, qui marque un but d'une autre dimension en envoyant un missile parfaitement enroulé du droit depuis l'angle de la surface qui heurte le poteau opposé avant de finir sa course dans les filets. 2-0 (58e).

Le scenario est idéal pour les joueurs de Scolari. Mais Andrade, 5 minutes plus tard, redonne espoir aux Néerlandais, pourtant abattus, en marquant contre son camp. La suite n'est que contrôle pour les Portugais, qui s'y prennent parfaitement pour éteindre les débuts d'incendies néerlandais. Deco, dans le temps additionnel, a même une occasion d'accroître le score, sans réussite. Mais le principal est fait. Rendez-vous dimanche pour la finale

«Casados por mais dois anos»
Luiz Felipe Scolari anunciou, após o encontro frente à Holanda, que qualificou Portugal para a final do Euro 2004, que vai continuar ao serviço da selecção das «quinas» por mais dois anos. «Felipão» vai permanecer na selecção até ao Mundial 2006.

Luiz Felipe Scolari (na foto) afirmou, esta quarta-feira, após a vitória da selecção lusa diante da Holanda, por 2-1, que colocou Portugal na final do Campeonato da Europa, que vai renovar contrato com a Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) por mais dois anos.

«Eu quero dizer que o meu presidente [Gilberto Madaíl] tem
falado em casamento, no bom sentido. Quero dizer que a aliança está aqui e nós casámos por mais dois anos... no bom sentido», confirmou o técnico.

Na conferência de imprensa a seguir ao encontro entre Portugal e Holanda, o seleccionador brasileiro, para explicar o casamento «no bom sentido» entre as duas partes, chegou mesmo a retirar a aliança e a coloca-la de novo no dedo.

Com esta revelação, terminam definitivamente as especulações sobre o futuro do treinador brasileiro, que chegou a ser apontado como o próximo técnico do Benfica.

Depois da disputa da segunda meia-final, ontem, em que a Grécia garantiu o reencontro com Portugal e deixou pelo caminho uma das equipas que melhor futebol praticou, a República Checa, já não me restam dúvidas: este Europeu levou a discussão do futebol para patamares quase filosóficos. Há muito que deixou de estar em causa o brilhantismo deste avançado ou o mérito daquele guarda-redes. As coisas parecem passar-se mais no plano místico/religioso do que propriamente sobre os relvados. E não me refiro apenas ao poder da Nossa Senhora do Caravaggio, do qual já não tenho a mais pequena dúvida... Refiro-me igualmente à campanha em crescendo da selecção portuguesa, com muito de heróico, mas que começou precisamente com uma derrota contra esta Grécia, com quem vai voltar a jogar, no domingo, só que desta vez para decidir quem sucede à França enquanto campeão europeu. É um círculo que está prestes a fechar-se e que - ironia das ironias - vai ter um valor emocional acrescentado por causa desse conceito chamado vingança que lhe vai estar associado.

Do jogo de ontem, há duas coisas que importa destacar antes de tudo o resto: a lesão de Nedved, aos 34 minutos, que tolheu a manobra atacante dos checos mas, fundamentalmente, deixou um conjunto de "soldados" de elite privado do seu general; depois, a tenacidade com que os gregos defendem e se agarram a cada lance, como se disso dependesse a entrada dos comandados de Rehhagel no Olimpo, a morada dos deuses helénicos. E esta selecção está farta de fazer história, ou não tivesse, sucessivamente, conquistado a primeira vitória grega numa fase final de uma grande competição, eliminado favoritos como a França ou a República Checa, até chegar à final. Tudo isto à custa de um "catenaccio" capaz de fazer corar o próprio Trapattoni!
 

Seitaridis foi a sombra de Baros

A capacidade de sacrifício é o ponto mais forte da Grécia, que leva ao limite a paciência dos adversários, como ontem sucedeu com uns checos que, quando virem as estatísticas, não entenderão o porquê da derrota. Seitaridis andou o tempo todo colado a Baros - tanto na direita como na esquerda -, Kapsis, apesar da desvantagem na altura, fez uma marcação impecável a Koller e Katsouranis foi a sombra de Nedved, até este ter de abandonar o relvado. A culpa foi de uma lesão no joelho direito provocada por um toque de... Katsouranis.

A República Checa atacou sempre mais, aproximou-se mais vezes da baliza contrária e rematou mais e com maior perigo, algo que a Grécia não conseguiu até ao prolongamento. Fechada sobre a sua linha defensiva e com o cerco montado em torno dos homens mais influentes do ataque checo, os gregos apostavam depois na capacidade individual de Karagounis e em longos lançamentos para os altíssimos Charisteas (1,91 metros) e Vryzas (1,88 m), pouco mais do que inofensivos durante 90 minutos.

A aposta de Rehhagel era quase exclusivamente defensiva e isso enervou os checos. Nem Poborsky nem Rosicky, que assumiram as funções de comando normalmente a cargo de Nedved, viram as suas iniciativas coroadas de êxito, já que aparecia sempre alguma cabeça, perna ou pé grego a cortar a meia dúzia de belas jogadas por eles desenhadas. O próprio Brueckner pareceu afectado pela postura irredutível dos helénicos, pois ao contrário das partidas anteriores, em que nunca mostrou medo de apostar no ataque, ontem só fez uma substituição, quando Smicer rendeu Nedved.

Apenas um dado final, para os mais cépticos: ontem, Kapsis vingou o pai que, em 1980, fora derrotado pela Checoslováquia no único encontro destas selecções em fases finais de Campeonatos da Europa.

Portugal-Holanda visto por três milhões e 900 mil na TV

A RTP 1 bateu um novo recorde de audiências. O jogo entre Portugal e a Holanda, que ditou a passagem da nossa selecção à final do EURO 2004, por 2-1, foi visto na quarta-feira por cerca de três milhões e 900 mil telespectadores, tendo se tornado no programa mais visto de sempre da televisão portuguesa, segundo a edição desta sexta-feira do Correio da Manhã.



O encontro conquistou 40,9% de audiência média e 87,2% de share, um resultado que permitiu ao canal público bater o anterior recorde, que também era seu, conquistado na passada semana no encontro das meias finais entre Portugal e Inglaterra.
