The Secret Norwegian Submarine Base being Rented by the Russians

According to "Newsweek" , Norway rented to Russia a key submarine base, Olavsvern, which is being used by Russian research vessels off the Swedish, Finnish and, of course, Norwegian coasts, and also by mini-submarines for surveillance and warfare investigations.

Russian Navy's single existing carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov

Analysts cast doubt on Russian plans for supercarrier [/b]

• The commander of the Russian Navy has announced plans for a 'supercarrier' exceeding 85,000 tonnes.
• Analysts from both East and West believe that Russia is unlikely to be able to build - or indeed meanigfully operate - such a ship.

Russian Navy commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov's claim that Russia will build a new, super-sized aircraft carrier exceeding 85,000 tonnes has been met with scepticism by analysts.

Many have questioned how realistic this ambition can be, given the current limitations of Russia's shipbuilding industry in particular and defence industry in general. The proposed super carrier would  be a quantum leap in capability and size over the  Russian Navy's single existing carrer, Admiral Kuznetsov, which at 43,000 tonnes is less than half the displacement of US Navy's Nimitz-class carriers (...)

The carrier would also be nuclear-powered: the first carrier of its kind in the Russian arsenal  should its design ever be realised. Unlike previous Russian carriers that have used only a ski-jump configuration for launching aircraft the new carrier would supposedly be equipped with both ski -ramp and the steam catapults used by the current generation of flat-topped carriers in service today.

A Russian nuclear submarine catches fire in a shipyard in the northern port of Severodvinsk

The Oscar II-class nuclear submarine, named Oryol,  caught fire while welding work in the state-owned shipyard of Zvyozdochka. According to Russian news agencies,  no one was injured and the vessel's nuclear reactor was shutdown beforehand. These same sources say that the fire involved rubber insulation between the submarine's outer and pressure hull.

The Orel is the same class as the Kursk, the submarine that sank in the Barents Sea, in August 2000. All 118 people aboard died.

Severodvinsk is around 600 miles north of Moscow. It seats on the White Sea, that separate Russia and  Finland.

The first new Russian frigate of the class Admiral Grigorenko

The first of the six frigates of the class "Admiral Grigorenko" begins trials in its shipyard, Yantar,  in Russia's westernmost exclave of Kaliningrad. These frigates, ordered for the Black Sea fleet, are based on the Talwar-class frigates, six of which were built at the same shipyard for the Indian Navy. They have a full-load displacement of  4.035 tons.

French president François Hollande said on Sunday he was looking for "a way out of the crisis with Russia" over the suspended delivery of Mistral-type helicopter carriers purchased by Moscow. Hollande said "we will see if we discuss"  the halted €1.2 billion contract with Russian president Putin when the two leaders meet in Armenia on Friday.

France suspended delivery of the two warships, "Vladivostok" and "Sevastopol"  last year amid tightening international sanctions against Russia over its role in the Ukraine crisis.

Despite a ceasefire in Ukraine, fighting has not entirely stopped and Hollande has repeatedly said that conditions were "still not right" for the delivery of the ships.

China, Russia to Hold First Joint Mediterranean Naval Drills

Russia and China to carry out joint manuevers in the Mediterranean Sea

Type 054A Frigate NATO codename Jiangkai II

According to news from USNI, China and Russia will hold joint naval drills in mid-May in the Mediterranean Sea. The manuevers will be the first time the two countries will hold military exercises together in this part of the world. According to the Chinese Defence Ministry, China and Russia have held naval drills in Pacific waters, but never before in the Med.

A total of nine ships (6 Russian and 3 Chinese) from the two countries will participate. The Chinese contingent will include vessels China now on anti-piracy patrols in waters off Somalia, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng told a monthly news briefing.

The aim is to deepen both countries’ friendly and practical cooperation, and increase our navies’ ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats,” Geng said. What needs saying is that these exercises are not aimed at any third party and have nothing to do with the regional situation.

The Chinese Defense Ministry gave no specific date for the drills, which will be focused on navigation safety, at-sea replenishment, escort missions and live fire exercises. Announced back in November following a meeting between Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan in Beijing, it was made clear both countries are concerned about the United States’ “rebalance” toward the Pacific of late.

No other details have as yet been given.

Really an important announcement, which has been confirmed by the Chinese government. Funnily enough, the joint exercise had been announced six months ago, but no one seemed to give any attention to it...

http://www.thediplomat.com/2014/11/russ ... n-pacific/

In fact, this will not be the first joint naval exercises of the two countries in the Mediterranean. The first one was carried out in January 2014.

These are the Russian nuclear cruiser "Pyotr Velikiy" (Peter the Great) and the Chinese frigate "Yancheng" during the Januay 2014 joint exercise.

Six Russian warships have begun today a ten days-long  joint exercise in the Mediterranean with two Chineses frigates,  after leaving  the port city of Novorossiysk.

One of the Russian ships which takes part in the joint exercise is the "Samoum", a Bora-class guided-missile hovercraft corvette, with a cruising speed of 100 kilometers an hour:
