U.S. Military Now In Control of Syrian Air Base


The U.S. military has been given the Rmeilan Air Base in the Syrian Kurdish region near Syria’s Iraqi and Turkish borders. The Kurdish YPG controlled the Syrian airbase but handed it over to a small team of U.S. Special Forces who have been supervising construction activities and fortifications at the newly founded base.

“Under a deal with the YPG, the U.S. was given control of the airport. The purpose of this deal is to back up the SDF, by providing weapons and an air base for U.S. warplanes,” an SDF spokesperson, Taj Kordsh, told Al-Jazeera.

This new base will give the Americans the ability to increase operational tempo and sorties in Syria.

We could see Cobras, Apaches, and A-10s operate from the base in the coming weeks.

US Defense Chief Says Coalition Will Put Boots on the Ground in Syria, Iraq

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that the US-led coalition will put boots on the ground to fight against Daesh terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

Carter said in an interview with CNBC that there would be boots on the ground as part of the strategy to fight Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

"We're doing more, because we need to do more because we need to defeat ISIL [Daesh]. I'm confident we will, but I want to accelerate that process," Carter told CNBC.

He also said that the US' allies in the fight against Daesh "can do more," adding that the terrorist group needs to be defeated in the Iraqi Mosul and it's so-called capital in Syria's Raqqa.

Satellite imagery appearing to show the US expanding a formerly disused air strip in Kurdish controlled northern Syria have been seen by the BBC.

The images, from the security analysts Stratfor, show a runway near the town of Rmeilan, being extended from 700 m. to 1,3 km. (...)

It is unclear, then, the extent to which it will really be used by the US as a base for airplanes.
