Type 31 Frigate project completes Whole Ship Preliminary Design Review

Team 31 has successfully completed its Whole Ship Preliminary Design Review (WSPDR) marking the end of the Engineering functional design phase.

Babcock say that the review provides a key indicator of the compliance, maturity and engineering risk in proceeding into Detailed Design and maturing the 3D CAD model.

“The WSPDR was the whole ship culmination event of a large number of specific reviews which addressed the maturity of the individual systems comprising the Type 31 Ship. WSPDR was held, virtually, over a period of 10 days in June, using an independent board comprising around fifteen subject matter experts, to review the design and interrogate the engineering team.

Although this was a Team 31 milestone event, attendees and contributors also came from the Authority (the UK Ministry of Defence). The independent board were impressed with the rate of progress made since contract award in November 2019, and the level of technical maturity of the design. The Engineering team in particular, and all contributors to the successful WSPDR, are to be commended for their efforts.”

Graeme Thomson, Babcock Type 31 Programme Director said:

“Completing the Whole Ship PDR is a key milestone for the Type 31 programme and signals our move into Detailed Design. I’d like to thank all involved, a lot of hard work went into achieving this positive outcome. I look forward to the next stage in this exciting and challenging programme.”

Babcock completes Type 31 whole ship preliminary design review

06 AUGUST 2020

The Ministry of Defence's Type 31 frigate programme has passed a significant milestone in its development, with a comprehensive review of the ship’s design having been completed.

What is known as the Whole Ship Preliminary Design Review (WSPDR) was completed, virtually, by 15 experts during ten days of scrutiny, which provided a key indicator of the compliance, maturity and engineering risk in proceeding to the next Detailed Design phase.

The WSPDR was carried out virtually over a period of ten days by an independent board to review the design and quiz the engineering team. Contributors from the British Ministry of Defence also attended the event.

The independent board were impressed with the rate of progress made since contract award in November 2019, and the level of technical maturity of the design. The Engineering team in particular, and all contributors to the successful WSPDR, are to be commended for their efforts.

Progress on the Type 31 programme continues at pace. Babcock’s Rosyth facility has seen significant investment in the last decade and is embarking on a new era of digitising facilities and systems to bring advancements and efficiencies into the manufacturing, build and assembly process for the frigates. This includes the installation of additional Advanced Manufacturing capability and the construction of a new assembly hall capable of housing two Type 31 frigates. Groundbreaking for the new hall took place in April, signalling the commencement of the civil works programme.

About Babcock Type 31 frigates:

The Type 31 (Arrowhead 140) will offer the Royal Navy a new class of ship with a proven ability to deliver a range of peacekeeping, humanitarian and warfighting capabilities whilst offering communities and supply chains throughout the UK a wide range of economic and employment opportunities.

Arrowhead 140 will offer the Royal Navy a new class of ship with a proven ability to deliver a range of peacekeeping, humanitarian and warfighting capabilities whilst offering communities and supply chains throughout the UK a wide range of economic and employment opportunities. Arrowhead 140 is based on the proven Iver Huitfeldt-class of a frigate of the Royal Danish Navy, designed by OMT, and adapted to Royal Navy requirement by Babcock and BMT. Thales will supply the combat management system of Type 31.

The Sunday Times reported that First Sea Lord Admiral Tony Radakin was considering reducing the number of Rear-Admirals at Navy Command by five.[135] The fighting arms excluding Commandant General Royal Marines would be reduced to 1-star or Commodore rank and the surface flotillas would be combined together.[136] Training would be concentrated under the Fleet Commander.[137] For example, Flag Officer Sea Training will be reduced from a Rear-Admiral position to a Commodore position and be re titled as 'Commander Fleet Operational Sea Training'.[138]

Os rumores são que a RN vai ficar com somente 08 fragatas ASW: as 03 Type 26 já autorizadas e as 05 Type 31e. Já os Type 45 começaram por ser 12, depois 08 e, finalmente, 06.

British Navy HMS Spey River-class offshore patrol vessel debuts at sea

18 SEPTEMBER 2020

According to information published by the British navy on September 18, 2020, the fifth and final new British Royal Navy HMS Spey River-class offshore patrol vessel is at sea for the first time.

The British Royal Navy HMS Spey has sailed from BAE Systems’ yard at Scotstoun on the Clyde to begin Contractor Sea Trials. A mix of Royal Navy sailors, BAE employees, contractors, inspections authorities and civilian sailors are crewing the 2,000-tonne warship for the key tests and assessments off the west coast of Scotland.

The sea trials are a significant milestone in Spey’s short life to date and are designed to thoroughly test the capability and integrity of the vessel. Her systems will be tested to the max and will include live firing of her weaponry (including her main 30mm gun), pushing the ship’s engines to their full power, and testing her top speeds before the ship returns to Scotstoun.

HMS Spey maiden voyage comes just weeks after the first sailors of her ship’s company moved on board and ahead of her journey to Portsmouth later this year when she will officially join the Royal Navy fleet.

The British Royal Navy HMS Spey is a Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessel currently in the late phases of construction as of August 2020 for the Royal Navy. The River-class s a highly versatile ship, designed to perform Economic Exclusion Zone management roles, including the provision of maritime security to coastal areas and effective disaster relief.

The 90-meter vessel is equipped with an air surveillance radar which can be used to detect low flying aircraft often used in smuggling operations. The ship’s rigid inflatable boat can be deployed swiftly from the davits for recovery and rescue operations and gives the ability to conduct sea boarding.

the HMS Spey is armed with one 30 mm DS30M Mark 2 that can engage fast inshore attack craft armed with short-range missiles, rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns or explosives, while 25 mm guns mounted port and starboard provide secondary armament to the vessel.

Featuring a 20-meter long flight deck, the 90-meter River-class vessel can land and fuel a medium-sized helicopter, up to 7 tonnes. It also provides ample deck space to up to six 20ft ISO containers for mission stores or humanitarian aid, with a 16-tonne capacity crane enabling cargo to be easily discharged to a jetty.

Offering a high standard of accommodation, the HMS Spey has sleeping quarters, dining and recreational facilities for up to 70 crew, but is capable of operating with a lean crew of just 36. It also incorporates additional cabin accommodation for up to 50 other personnel such as trainees, special forces, scientists, or medical teams.
