FN Herstal unveils new ammo cartridges
FN Herstal will showcase four new small calibre ammunitions at DSEI 2019 with the aim of meeting both new threats faced by militaries and recent trends like environmental regulations.
The new cartridges are being introduced to FN Herstal’s 5.56 and .50 calibres, delivering a wider small calibre ammunition range.
Two of these rounds – the FN Permax 5.56 and FN Propass 5.56 – are compliant with NATO standards and compatible with all 5.56x45mm NATO weapons chambers, as well as being qualified on FN Herstal weapons such as the FN SCAR-SC.
The FN Permax 5.56 has been designed to meet current European and international environmental regulations, as well as anticipating future ones around the use of lead in weapons. The FN Propass 5.56 is an armour piercing round capable of perforating armoured targets and level IV ballistic protection.
The other two rounds are the FN Aria .50 RR and its tracer variant. These ammunitions are compatible with weapons chambered in 12.7x99mm NATO calibre (.50 calibre), as well as being qualified on some FN machine guns.
The FN ARIA .50 RR rounds are designed as reduced range cartridges, intended for ranges below 3.5km. The cartridges do not require re-zeroing or converted weapons, an are intended to be used for training with .50 calibre weapons.
FN also proposes ‘an extensive range of .50cal rounds, including the multi-purpose Armour Piercing Explosive Incendiary’.
