Después de 4 años trabajando en su desarrollo, por fin la compañía estadounidense Kramer Defense tiene a punto para su lanzamiento el nuevo cartucho 6.8×45 UCC (Urban Combat Cartridge), una munición militar ideada para los cada vez más frecuentes combates en entornos urbanos. Según sus creadores, el nuevo 6.8×45 UCC es el calibre más potente que va a poder encontrarse en el mercado para alimentar a los fusiles de asalto M16/AR-15 con cañón de 16” (40,6 cm).

Basándose en la vaina del calibre .223 (5.56x45mm), Kramer Defense ha diseñado un nuevo cartucho con un rendimiento balístico similar al que ofrece el calibre 6.8 SPC, pero con un coste económico sensiblemente inferior. Este nuevo calibre, bautizado comercialmente como 6.8x45mm UCC, ofrece un 38% más de energía en boca que el popular 5.56×45 OTAN; un 15% más de potencia que el .300 BlackOut; y un 10% más de energía que el 7.62x39mm ruso del AK 47 (datos comparativos utilizando como referencia un rifle M16 con cañón de 16”).

10 ventajas que situarían a este nuevo cartucho militar por encima del cada día más denostado .223 Remington:

1.- Mejor rendimiento balístico en cualquier cañón, independientemente de su longitud (ver comparaciones balísticas)
2.- Mejor rendimiento balístico en cualquier distancia de tiro.
3.- Los cargadores del nuevo 6.8×45 son compatibles con los cartuchos del 5.56.
4.- Los cargadores del 6.8 UCC admiten la misma capacidad de carga que los del 5.56 (30 cartuchos).
5.- Utilización del mismo cierre que emplean los M4, M16 y AR-15 ya existentes (no habría que sustituirlo).
6.- Uso de las mismas cajas y sistemas de embalaje y transporte que en la munición del 5.56.

Russian scandal postpones Venezuelan Kalashnikov, munition factories

Construction of a Kalashnikov assault rifle factory and corresponding munitions factory [in Venezuela] will be further delayed, according to Russian reports. The delay are being attributed to an alleged multi-million fraud which led to corruption charges filed against a former Russian senator [Serguei Popelniujov].

In May 2005 Venezuela signed a US $40  million contract for 100,000 AK-103 assault rifles, 74 million rounds of 7,62x39 mm ammunition, and five simulators. Following the initial batch of deliveries, then president Hugo Chávez announced that Venezuela required 920,000 new assault rifles and would therefore establish its own weapon-production facility. Chávez sought to equip a large people's militia that would serve as a strategic reserve in case of an invasion and to counter-balance the Venezuelan military (to prevent it from taking over the government).

Colt Defense to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by Monday

Gun maker Colt Defense LLC plans to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by Monday, according to people familiar with the matter, amid business and accounting troubles.

The company has secured financing to continue operating while in bankruptcy and expects to remain in business after the restructuring, the people said.

The West Hartford, Conn.-based company, with a legacy dating to 17th century New England, developed a pistol it calls “the gun that won the West” and enjoyed a lucrative stretch in the late 1990s and early 2000s as the U.S. military’s sole supplier of the M4 line of firearms widely used by front-line troops.

But Colt has struggled in recent years with a slowdown in rifle sales and its 2013 loss of a key contract to supply the U.S. Army with the M4. The company has had accounting problems that caused it to revise prior years’ reported financial results and miss a creditor’s initial filing deadline for an annual report, according to regulatory filings.

Colt plans to try to reduce its debt burden via a court-supervised auction of its business, to generate proceeds to repay some of its lenders, the people familiar with the plans said.

Kalashnikov unveils PL-14 pistol

Concern Kalashnikov unveiled its new PL-14 self-loading pistol, chambered for the internationally available 9x19 mm cartridge, at the International Military-Technical Forum 'ARMY-2015' held in Kubinka (Moscow Region) from 16-19 June.

The pistol is named Lebedev after its designer, as is common Russian practice. Its distinguishing features are said to be its enhanced ergonomics and balance, which meet modern requirements of human biomechanics and current pistol shooting techniques. Special attention was also paid to the unique aesthetics of the new pistol.

Concern Kalashnikov CEO Alexey Krivoruchko said in a 17 June press release that the versatility of the new pistol enables it to be used not only as a military and law-enforcement weapon but also for competitive shooting. "We intend to produce different variants of the pistol, for example with certain characteristics of the trigger mechanism making it suitable for special forces use, as well as a civilian version with a trigger that would be suitable for practical shooting competitions as well," Krivoruchko said.

At only 28 mm across the pistol-grip at its widest point and only 21 mm in width across the slide, the pistol is slim compared to its counterparts. All controls are ambidextrous. The steel slide has deep grasping-grooves front and rear, and the lower front section of the polymer frame has a length of MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny-type rail for fitting tactical aiming or lighting devices.

Particular attention was paid to safety when designing the pistol, to ensure that there will be no mechanical discharge (drop-test) even when falling from a great height onto a hard surface. The basic version has a longer, heavier trigger pull to prevent inadvertent discharge if the firer keeps his finger on the trigger; other more skilled users can have a lighter trigger-pull option.

Safety features also include a loaded chamber indicator (LCI) in the breech area that provides both a visual and tactile indication that the weapon is loaded. The LCI has an additional function which "coupled with a modified geometry of the chamber, allows shooting with defective ammunition when brass size does not meet the specifications", Krivoruchko said.

Basic technical details of the PL-14 pistol are: overall length 220 mm, height 136 mm, width 28 mm, with a barrel length of 127 mm. Magazine capacity is 15 rounds and weight loaded is 990 g.

Here it is – the new Sako rifle for the Canadian Rangers





The Canadian Rangers require a hunting rifle for survival and self defence against large North American carnivores at ranges of 0 metres to 300 metres. Currently, the Rangers use the Lee Enfield No. 4 to meet these requirements but the age and the scarcity of parts for this weapon will soon make it very difficult if not impossible to maintain, according to the Department of National Defence and Colt Canada.
