Currently, the Russian Navy operates three project 22800 corvettes: the Mytishchi, the Sovetsk and the Odintsovo. All of them are operating in the Baltic Fleet. Overall, shipbuilders will construct 18 such warships, which will be divided equally between the Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea fleets.

The Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile corvette was designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. The ship is intended to engage the enemy’s strategic facilities in green waters, destroy hostile surface combatants and offshore installations individually and in conjunction with other forces, and repel air attacks. It can also eliminate frogmen, conduct search-and-rescue operations, and support coast guard units.

The Project 22800 corvette has a length of about 67 meters, a width of 11 meters, a draft of 2.8 meters and a full displacement of 860 tons. The ship is powered by two M-507D-1 diesel engines with a power output of 7,360 kWt each and an 8,830 kWt M70FRU gas-turbine engine. The corvette features a top speed of up to 35 knots, an economical speed of 12 knots, a cruising range of 2,500 nautical miles, and an endurance of 12 days. The ship launches missiles at Level 5 sea state.

The corvette’s armament comprises an AK-176MA 76mm gun and a Pantsir-M (NATO reporting name: SA-22 Greyhound) antiaircraft missile/gun system, while the first two ships of the type carry two AK-630 30mm small-caliber antiaircraft guns.

The ship is equipped with an eight-cell 3S-14 vertical launcher for Kalibr (SS-N-27 Sizzler) cruise missiles, which is located in its superstructure. The Project 22800 corvette features increased seaworthiness, high maneuverability, and low radar signature of its superstructure and hull. The ship can carry an Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle.

Russia To Start Construction Of New Project 22350M Frigate In 2024
The upgraded Project 22350M lead frigate will be laid down in 2024, Deputy CEO for military shipbuilding of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Vladimir Korolyov told TASS.

“From 2024, we will start to build the upgraded lead frigate,” Korolyov said, when asked about the date when the Project 22350M frigate would be laid down.

According to him, work to develop a technical design of the ship is currently in progress and is planned to be completed in 2023.

“We understand that the Navy needs a modern frigate with big displacement and armament. The issue is being actively discussed by the Defense Ministry,”

A source in the defense industry told TASS earlier that there were plans to build 12 upgraded Project 22350M frigates with up to 48 Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler), Onyx (SS-N-26 Strobile) and Tsirkon cruise missiles on each of them. The new frigates are planned to carry the Poliment-Redut air defense missile system with up to 100 missiles, antisubmarine warfare and torpedo systems.

Russia’s Upgraded Kirov-Class Cruiser Admiral Nakhimov To Start Sea Trials In 2023

“We can say that our work is proceeding on schedule… I believe that the cruiser will start trials in 2023,” Korolyov said in reply to a question about when the work on the Admiral Nakhimov would be completed.

While upgrading the Admiral Nakhimov cruiser, the shipbuilders have to deal with a lot of issues related to the warship’s powerplant, its weapons and radio-electronic armament. Specialists are carrying out large-scale work on the cruiser’s missile systems, he said.

The pace of work on the Admiral Nakhimov demonstrates that the Sevmash shipbuilders can both construct nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarines and restore the technical readiness of such unique warships as Project 1144 Orlan-class heavy nuclear-powered cruisers, the deputy CEO said.

The Admiral Nakhimov has been under repairs at the Sevmash Shipyard since 1999. Real work on the warship started in 2013. It was reported earlier that the heavy missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov would enter trials in 2021.

During the upgrade, the cruiser’s strike capabilities have been enhanced. The ship will carry Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) and Onyx (SS-N-26 Strobile) missile systems. In future, the Admiral Nakhimov will get Tsirkon hypersonic missiles.

Tsirkon missile first launch from submarine to be conducted in White Sea in October

The first test launch of the Tsirkon hypersonic missile from a submarine will be carried out from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine in the White Sea in October, a source in the military-industrial complex told TASS.



"The first launch of a Tsirkon from the Severodvinsk submarine within the framework of development flight tests will be carried out from the water surface position at the beginning of October. Depending on its results, the second launch from underwater at sea targets is scheduled in November," he said.

According to him, the scheduled first launch from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine in September was postponed to October due to the need to carry out all technical preparation measures.

NPO Mashinostroyeniya (part of Tactical Missiles Corporation), the developer and producer of the Tsirkon missiles, remained mum on this information.

According to agency’s interlocutor, by the end of 2021, two Tsirkon launches will be scheduled, and also state trials will take place next year. The source mentioned that this missile’s state trials are set to begin in November, and they will continue in 2022, after that the planned supply of missiles to the Russian Navy will begin.

Russia’s newest Project 636.3 submarine Magadan will enter service next week

The Russian Navy will commission the Project 636.3 Magadan diesel-electric submarine on October 12, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The Project 636.3 submarines are thought to be among the quietest in the world. Their length is 74 meters, with a displacement of nearly 3,900 tons; their design depth is 240 meters, their maximum working depth is 300 meters, and their range is 7,500 miles.

Russian Navy Commissions 9th Project 636.3 Submarine ‘Magadan’

The Project 636.3 (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo) diesel-electric submarine (SSK) B-602 "Magadan" has joined the Russian Navy on Tuesday. The Russian navy’s ensign, the St. Andrews flag, was raised on the submarine. This is the third submarine, built at the JSC Admiralty Shipyards for the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy.

The Magadan is the third submarine of the series for the Pacific fleet. It was floated on March 26, 2021 in a high state of readiness (91 percent). Mooring trials began in April followed by factory running trials that began in late June and ended in early August. Acceptance trials were held the same month. The acceptance act was signed on October 5.



The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky first submarine of the series was handed over to the Pacific fleet on November 25, 2019. The Volkhov second submarine followed on October 24, 2020. Both submarines and the Gremyashchy corvette are sailing from the Baltic Sea to the home port of call in the Far East.

The Ufa fourth submarine has to be floated in late 2021. The light hull is being created, pipelines and electric cables laid, and acoustic coating installed.

In August 2021, the Admiralty Shipyard laid the Mozhaisk and the Yakutsk diesel-electric submarines of project 636.3. Painting, insulation, and electric work is being done in October. Hydraulic tests of the bow unit are scheduled in the end of the year. The Yakutsk sub also has its hull built.

The Pacific fleet has to receive the whole series of six submarines by 2024. The contract for their construction was signed by the Defense Ministry and the Admiralty Shipyard in September 2016. The Rubin Design Bureau upgraded torpedo and missile arms, the information command system, radar and sonar. General systems were modernized to decrease the signature of the submarine and improve living conditions.

From August 2010 to November 2016, the Admiralty Shipyard built six submarines of project 636.3 for the Black Sea fleet. Export contracts helped the shipyard streamline batch production of project 636.3. The Novorossiysk lead submarine was laid in August 2010 and joined the Navy in September 2014, i.e. the construction took 49 months. The construction of subsequent subs accelerated. The Rostov-on-Don was built in 37 months, the Stary Oskol in 35 months, the Krasnodar in 21 months, the Veliky Novgorod in 24 months, the Kolpino in 25 months.

The construction of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for the Pacific fleet took 28 months. The Volkhov was built in 40 months. It took the shipyard 23 months to build the Magadan. The Ufa has to follow in 2022 and the Mozhaisk and the Yakutsk final subs of the series are to become operational in 2023-2024.

Russia to arm icebreaking patrol ships with Kalibr missile

According to a report by the TASS news agency, the Ivan Papanin-class multirole icebreaking patrol ship being manufactured by Yugreftransflot can be armed with a Kalibr-K container-type cruise missile system.

“The Ivan Papanin-class vessel can carry a mobile Kalibr-K missile system. This will require three standard cargo containers that can be delivered to the ship and unloaded ashore by 40-tonne shipboard cranes,” the source of TASS explained.

The project supervisor explained that, due to the requirement to offload the mobile missile system onto the coast, a fourth container can be built aboard the icebreaker to employ the Kalibr-K fighting squad, which is now in transit.

“The personnel will be living in the ship’s passenger cabins during the period of its transit along the Northern Sea Route. If necessary, the Ivan Papanin will be capable of fulfilling the role of an expeditionary vessel while conducting shuttle voyages along the Northern Sea Route,” he added.



The Ivan Papanin-class ships will be capable of sailing along the Northern Sea Route without icebreaker support thanks to its ice-reinforced hull, the Azipod electric propulsion system, and an ice-type radar station. The vessel will be able to promptly deliver modules with repair shops, medical and housing blocks, and also groups of specialists to research and military bases in the Arctic. The reefer ship will focus on delivering seafood from the Far East to European Russia.

About Ivan Papanin-class vessels

In October 2019, the 8,500-ton ‘Ivan Papanin’ was launched in St. Petersburg. The ‘Ivan Papanin’ began construction in April 2017 and is scheduled to be completed in 2022 or 2023. Despite being an icebreaker, the 114-meter-long warship may be utilized not just as a patrol ship but also as a tug for other boats. Her hull is capable of withstanding ice up to 50cm thick.

Unlike other icebreakers, this ship will be strongly armed like any other missile ship. She will be armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and a 76.2 mm naval gun., and also boasts a helipad, with a hangar for a reconnaissance helicopter and bays for two Raptor-class speedboats. It has a capacity for 50 mission crew, in addition to the sailors and officers manning the ship herself, and has an endurance of 60 days, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

About Kalibr missile

The Kalibr missile system consists of a standard container-type versatile launching module as its basic unit. Its configuration includes an inclined or vertical launcher, a fire control system, combat control, navigation and communications equipment and also life-support, power supply and fire extinguishing systems. The missile system consists of four launching modules placed into 12-meter cargo containers.

The Kalibr-K can receive target acquisition data from any coastal, shipboard, airborne and satellite systems. Kalibr cruise missile systems are currently operational in the Russian Navy. As data from open sources suggest, a 3M-14 cruise missile of the Kalibr system develops a subsonic speed and is capable of striking targets at a distance of about 2,000 km. Russia has developed the Kalibr-NK cruise missile system for its surface ships and the Kalibr-PL version for its submarines.

The improved project 11711 landing ship tanks (project 11711) built by the Yantar Shipyard for the Russian have doubled the space and can carry a reinforced marine battalion of 500 men, shipyard CEO Ilya Samarin told the Zvezda TV.

Yantar shipyard CEO Ilya Samarin said:

“I believe it can easily accommodate 500 people. There are two upgraded warships so far. They considerably differ from predecessors. The hardware carrying capacity increased 30 percent. Living conditions of the crew and marines have been improved,”

The upgraded warship has doubled the size, but can still sail shallow waters.

“The technical project allows landing assault on unequipped coast. It is a blue-water ship. It can operate in northern latitudes, which is important today,” Samarin said.

The Yantar Shipyard laid the Vladimir Andreev and the Vasily Trushin landing ships of upgraded project 11711 on April 23, 2019. It earlier built the Ivan Gren and the Petr Morgunov warships of project 11711.

These two ships, Vladimir Andreyev and Vasily Trushin, were respectively laid down on the 23rd of April 2019 with an expected commissioning by the Russian navy in 2023 and 2024 respectively. They are an improved version of the first two ships of the class, Ivan Gen and Pyotr Morgunov, which were commissioned in June 2018 and December 2020.

The evolved design features an increased displacement of 7,000 to 8,000 tons compared to the 6,000 of the previous subclass. They will feature a large superstructure to allow for increased deck space. This allows them to accommodate up to four helicopters with the capacity to operate two of them simultaneously.

To allow for all of these increases in capacity and dimensions, the new subclass will be equipped with more powerful engines with four 16D49 diesel engines as opposed to the previous 10D49 model.

These new ships and the Ivan Gren class as a whole, are a central aspect in the modernisation program of the Russan navy’s amphibious fleet. Mainly composed of old assets from the cold war, important efforts have been made in the shipbuilding sector to assure future capabilities
