Russia's newest frigate, first-in-class Admiral Gorshkov , passed through the English Channel on 5 March and headed out into the Bay of Biscay on its first long-range operational cruise.
Admiral Gorshkov, which formally entered service with the Russian Northern Fleet in September 2018, departed from its home port of Severomorsk on 26 February, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
The UK Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender shadowed the frigate and its support group, comprising the tug Nicolay Chiker , supply ship Elbrus , and tanker Kama . Admiral Gorshkov last entered UK waters in December 2017 during a period of sea trials.
