BAE Systems Global Combat Systems has received an order to deliver 38 additional M777A2 155 mm advanced lightweight towed howitzers to the US Army and US Marine Corp (USMC) and 25 to the Canadian Army under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.
BAE Systems Global Combat Systems yet delivered the 500th M777A1/A2 of over 700 howitzers originally ordered for the US Army and USMC.
Canada on its side has received 12 under a previous contract. The Canadians have had 4 guns in Afghanistan for nearly 3 years. The guns have fired over 20,000 rounds on operations.
The Australian Army has stated their intent to acquire a minimum of 35 systems pending a Ministerial agreement planned to be taken during June.
The company is looking to sell is M777 system in countries like India, Oman and Thailand as well to seven NATO countries like Portugal and Denmark. The weapon can fire the M982 Excalibur trajectory correctable artillery shell, jointly developed by Raytheon Missile Systems and BAE Systems AB.
