On September 13, 2024, the stakeholders in the construction of the second of four force replenishment vessels (BRF - Bâtiments Ravitailleurs de Force in French) of the “Logistics Fleet” (FLOTLOG) program, intended for the French Navy, gathered in Saint-Nazaire to celebrate the taking of command ceremony and the technical launch carried out on August 19.

The Jacques Chevallier force supply vessel (BRF) has just been accepted into active service by Admiral Nicolas Vaujour, Chief of Staff of the Navy. It is now declared operational, able to be fully deployed from its base port in Toulon. The French Navy now has its first BRF, which will be joined by the Jacques Stosskopf, the second in series and launched last August, then by two other BRFs by 2033. They are gradually replacing the command and supply vessels.

Northrop Grumman Starts Production of First E-2D Advanced Hawkeye for France

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) celebrated the start of production of the first E-2D Advanced Hawkeye for the French Navy at the company’s St. Augustine manufacturing facility. The ceremony brought together representatives from the French Navy, Northrop Grumman, Naval Air Systems Command and Navy International Programs Office.

This milestone puts France on course to field the world's premier airborne command and control aircraft.

• Northrop Grumman is contracted to produce three E-2D aircraft, the first of which is scheduled for delivery in 2027.
• The E-2Ds will replace France’s E-2C Hawkeye 2000 fleet, which has been in operation for over 25 years.
• The E-2D brings significant enhancements over its predecessors, including the ability for aerial refueling.

Janice Zilch, vice president, multi-domain command and control programs, Northrop Grumman: "Our partnership with France goes back over 25 years. We are proud to have supported the French Navy with the Hawkeye 2000, and we look forward to providing a generational leap in decision dominance with the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye."

Northrop Grumman's E-2C Hawkeye 2000, which entered service with the French Navy in 1998, provides air defense and supports the Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group. France is the only country other than the U.S. to operate its E-2C Hawkeyes from an aircraft carrier. This capability has enabled interoperability exercises that support Hawkeyes and other aircraft from the French and U.S. fleets.

French Navy Rafale M fires Meteor air-to-air missile

A French Navy (Marine Nationale) Rafale Marine fired a Meteor long range air-to-air missile. The firing, which took place on 18 June, was the first one conducted from an aircraft belonging to an operational airwing: Flottille 11F.

The firing was first announced on social media by French defense minister, Sebastien Lecornu:

A Rafale Marine from the air wing of the Charles de Gaulle successfully conducted a training Meteor missile launch for the first time at the DGA test center in the Landes. Milestone achieved by the Marine Nationale in its operational preparation for high intensity.

The wasn’t the “first ever” Metero firing by a Rafale M. As reported at the time by Naval News, the first firing took place in February 2019. Contacted by Naval News for more information, a French Navy spokesperson explained:

The 2019 missile firing was known as an “ETO” (Technical and Operational Evaluation). It corresponds to the experimental phase conducted by the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (CEPA in this case) after the weapons qualification, which allows the development of technical and operational recommendations for the flottilles

It was therefore launched by the CEPA by an experimental pilot in a non-operational scenario.

The launch announced last week is the first one carried out by an operational flottille and by an operational pilot (non-experimental), with operational preparation processes resulting from the preliminary work carried out by the CEPA in 2019.
