Slovakia signs for F-16V fighters

The Slovak government has signed a EUR1.6 billion (USD1.8 billion) procurement contract with the US Department of Defense (DoD) for 14 Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 70/72 Fighting Falcon multirole combat aircraft.
"The Slovak Republic officially signed documents on the basis of which it will procure 12 single-seat fighters and two two-seater versions", Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said on 12 December.

The contract includes provisions for support as well as the training of air and ground crew. Raytheon AIM-120C7 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles are also included.

The Slovak armed forces will take delivery of the first four aircraft in 2022, two of which will be two-seater variants, and the remaining 10 single-seater aircraft by December 2023. The F-16V features the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar (derived from the F-16E/F Block 60 AN/APG-80 and also known as the Scalable Agile Beam Radar [SABR]), a new Raytheon mission computer, the Link 16 datalink, modern cockpit displays, an enhanced electronic warfare system, and a ground-collision avoidance system.

Slovakia selected the latest version of the F-16 to replace its fleet of 12 Russian-built MiG-29 'Fulcrum' aircraft that are becoming obsolete (only two or three aircraft are airworthy at any one time).

Slovak Ministry of Defence (MoD) sources say it will extend the service-life contract of the MiG-29 fleet until December 2023, when the Slovak armed forces take delivery of all 14 F-16 aircraft. The MoD will need to negotiate with Russia or third-party countries in order to secure the necessary spare parts for its MiG-29 fleet.

Slovakia buys Black Hawk helicopters, leaving Vipers up for grabs

After months of pondering, Slovakia has decided to purchase 12 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for its military, according to Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák. The move could encourage Ukraine to intensify its lobbying in Washington as Kyiv seeks the 12 AH-1Z Viper helos that Bratislava rejected.

The Black Hawk offer, comprising second-hand modernized copters, was submitted by Ace Aeronautics which is part of the Helicopter Alliance group, local daily Denník N reported. The group is controlled by Czech entrepreneur Jaroslav Strnad, the founder and former owner of local defense group Czechoslovak Group. The holding is currently owned by the founder’s son Michal Strnad, and operates a number of production facilities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The Black Hawks were recently offered to Bratislava for around €150 million ($158 million) without weapons, compared with the Vipers’ revised price which exceeded €550 million, according to the minister. The Black Hawk is manufactured by Lockheed Martin’s subsidiary Sikorsky, and the Viper is produced by Bell.

As Slovak officials ponder the purchase of new attack helicopters, the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák has announced Bratislava has received two new offers from the United States, allowing the nation to choose between 12 AH-1Z Viper helos and 12 upgraded UH-60 Black Hawk copters.

Last July, the U.S. State Department approved a tentative foreign military sale of 12 Vipers, manufactured by Bell, to Slovakia for an estimated $600 million. This represented a solid increase compared with the initial offer of $340 million pitched to the previous Slovak government. That discount was partly due to the fact that a contract with Pakistan, the initially envisioned recipient of the aircraft, had fallen through.

The Slovak military currently operates a fleet of nine UH-60 Black Hawks manufactured by Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.

Kaliňák said there is a significant difference between the original $340 million Viper offer and the current price of the helicopters, which exceeds €550 million ($582 million).
