Polish Navy inks $570M deal for minesweepers, rescue vessel

 WARSAW, Poland — The Polish Ministry of Defence has signed a deal with a consortium formed by the Gdansk-based Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard and the country’s defense giant PGZ to acquire two minesweeper vessels and one rescue vessel.

“We are rebuilding the Polish Navy, which was forgotten for many years,” Deputy Defence Minister Bartosz Kownacki said in a statement.

 The ministry says the acquisitions, which are worth nearly 2 billion zloty (U.S. $570 million), will be part of its effort to modernize the country’s Navy and preserve Poland’s operational capacities in the Baltic Sea. The two minesweepers are scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the years 2020 to 2021, Remontowa Shipbuilding said in a statement.

 In addition to the minesweepers and one rescue vessel, Warsaw also aims to replace its outdated Kobben-class submarines with three new subs under a contract estimated to be worth some 10 billion zloty. Last August, the ministry decided to overhaul two of the Kobbens, but the subs are to be decommissioned, one in 2018 and another in 2020.

 Remontowa Shipbuilding is a privately owned shipyard with a portolio of naval ships, cargo and offshore vessels, and ferries.

 Headquartered in Radom, central Poland, PGZ consists of more than 60 companies with an aggregate workforce of 17,500. The state-run group’s total annual revenues are about 5 billion zloty.

Three bidders in play for Poland’s Orka submarine program

In an update on its acquisition programs for the Polish Navy, Poland’s defense ministry on December 29 said that three European contractors have been shortlisted for the country’s Orka submarine program.

Poland is looking to acquire three new submarines to replace its remaining three, old Koben-class submarines.

The country’s defense ministry said it has received offers from Germany, Sweden and France.

French shipbuilder Naval Group is proposing its Scorpene type submarines the MBDA-built naval cruise missile MdCN (Missile de Croisière Naval) in its submarine version.

Germany’s Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems is proposing its Type 212 Common Design (CD) submarines which will be built for the navies of Norway and Germany.

Sweden’s Saab has offered the A26 submarine, a design used for the construction of Sweden’s new submarines.

The defense ministry noted that, in addition to the military specifications of the offered designs, factors like the level of technology transfer, autonomy in the use of cruise missiles and Polish industry integration would play a role in the process.

Once the contractor has been chosen, submarine deliveries are expected to start between 2024 and 2026.

Poland Orders Four AW101 for Navy

Leonardo announced on 26 April that it has received a contract from the Polish Ministry of National Defence (MoND), valued at PLN1.65 billion (€380 million), for four AW101 helicopters for the nation’s navy.



Through its fully owned Polish company, PZL-Świdnik, Leonardo will supply the rotorcraft and a comprehensive integrated logistics and training package to MoND by 2022. The Polish company was selected as prime contractor in a multi-stage process and plays a significant role in the manufacture of all AW101 helicopters ordered worldwide. The aircraft will perform a range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and combat search and rescue (CSAR).

“We are committed to further reinforcing our presence and contribution to Poland, one of Leonardo’s home countries where we see significant collaboration opportunities in the future,” commented Leonardo CEO, Alessandro Profumo.

“The supply of the best-in-class maritime AW101s will allow the Polish Navy to meet its rigorous requirements for the protection of national security in the Baltic Sea and for NATO operations. It will also enable life-saving missions in demanding conditions with second-to-none effectiveness, leveraging Leonardo’s leading role in the maritime helicopter field," added Leonardo Helicopters’ Managing Director, Gian Piero Cutillo.

To further consolidate its presence and develop its business in Poland, Leonardo is establishing a new legal entity headquartered in Warsaw. Leonardo Poland will represent and promote the entire technological and product portfolio, supporting the customer during the programme life cycles to develop partnerships with Polish industry. Marco Lupo has been appointed President of Leonardo Poland, with the aim of strengthening relationships with Polish customers and stakeholders and reinforcing Leonardo’s already well-established position in the country.

Não te esqueças que é a versão ASW, com mais sensores e por isso mais cara. Mas em contrapartida, nós que gastámos 440  milhões por 12 unidades há 15 anos atrás, ainda hoje andamos a brincar aos contratos de manutenção, temos falta de sobresselentes e nunca vimos as contrapartidas todas. Ao menos os polacos assinaram parte das contrapartidas ainda antes de encomendarem os helis, vão fabricar parte dos aparelhos e ficar com capacidade de efectuar a sua manutenção. Tem tudo a ver. 

Quanto aos nossos CSAR, já disseste tudo amigo tenente. Esta merda está entregue a amadores e oportunistas, não há nada a fazer.

On 12 August at the Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard, acceptance documents were signed for the second of a series of modern mine destroyers – the ORP ‘Albatros’ vessel being built for the Polish Navy.

The ship was built by a consortium consisting of: the leader – Stocznia REMONTOWA Shipbuilding S.A. belonging to the REMONTOWA HOLDING S.A. capital group and members – Ośrodek Badawczo – Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej S.A. (OBR CTM S.A.) and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna (formerly Stocznia Marynarki Wojennej).

The handover of the ship was preceded by several months of delivery and acceptance trials, during which the offshore platform and mine threat equipment and systems were checked. Successful completion of the acceptance trials confirmed the ship’s ability to perform its main tasks, which include:

detecting, identifying and combating sea mines and other objects and explosives in sea areas,
securing sea communication routes,
conducting operations in mine threat areas,
environmental assessment in underwater areas.
The ORP ALBATROS ship is already the second of the KORMOARAN II type mine destroyer series. Five years ago, a prototype vessel ORP KORMORAN was handed over to the Polish Navy.

ORP Kormoran was handed over to the navy five years ago. On the basis of experience gained during its operation, certain modifications were introduced in the construction of subsequent vessels. Thanks to them, ORP ALBATROS, as well as subsequent vessels, is equipped with new devices for verifying sea areas. The ship’s artillery system was also changed to a more modern one.

ORP ALBATROS will become part of the 13th minesweeper squadron, which reports to the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla in Świnoujście.

Delivery first Polish Merlin

On 7 August 2023, the first Leonardo AW101 Merlin maritime helicopter for the Lotnictwo Marynarki Wojennej (LMW, Polish Navy) was delivered to Poland. The AW101, still registered ZR288 (c/n 50288), made a fuel stop at Rotterdam-The Hague airport.

Originally the Polish Navy planned to acquire eight AW101s to replace its ageing Mi-14 helicopters currently operated by the 44 Baza Lotnictwa Morskiego (44.BLotM) at Darłowo air base. This number was reduced to four in 2018, postponing the purchase of the other four.

It is expected that all four Merlins wil be delivered this year.

The New Frigates Will Strengthen the Polish Navy

GDYNIA, Poland --- “We have witnessed a very important event, which is the next stage of our activities aimed at strengthening the Polish Navy. Two years ago, we signed a contract regarding the order of new frigates from a Polish shipyard. Thanks to cooperation with Great Britain, with Babcock and other companies forming the consortium, we have now taken another step forward,” said Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of National Defense in Gdynia.

On Wednesday, August 16, at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna sp. z o.o. in Gdynia, the head of the Ministry of National Defense participated in the ceremony of burning metal sheets for the first of the three Miecznik frigates for the Polish Navy.

“Yesterday, at the parade in Warsaw, we watched the strength of the Polish Army. First of all, the strength of the land forces, but also the strength of the air forces. It is difficult to present the strength of the Navy in Warsaw. Therefore, today we are in Gdynia and we are witnessing the next stage of strengthening the Polish Navy.

“Three frigates in the Miecznik program will constitute a new quality in the Polish Navy. They will be heavily armed, both in terms of offensive and anti-aircraft weapons. We have talked many times about the Navy with Minister Siewiera, with the President of the Republic of Poland, and as a consequence of these strategic documents, as a consequence of our findings, today we have another stage in terms of strengthening the Polish Navy,” said Minister Mariusz Błaszczak.
