Navy’s New Frigate Will Not Have A Vertical Launch System For Missiles

FF(X) will initially have the same armament installed as the Littoral Combat Ships, relying on uncrewed platforms and modular payloads for expanded capability.

U.S. Navy has confirmed to TWZ that the armament package for its first “flight” of its new FF(X) frigates will not include a built-in Vertical Launch System (VLS). There had been widespread questions about whether the ships would include a VLS array after renderings were released with no such feature readily apparent.

A lack of any type of VLS on the FF(X) design is a glaring omission that can only raise questions about the operational utility and flexibility of the ships. At the same time, the new frigates will be able to carry modular payloads, including containerized missile launchers, on their sterns. The Navy also has an explicit plan to employ the FF(X)s as “motherships” for uncrewed surface vessels (USV), likely offering a distributed arsenal, as well as additional sensors, for the frigates to leverage during operations.

Grande parte do orçamento de defesa dos EUA é gasto em inutilidades, projetos megalómanos que raramente chegam ao fim, e a encher os bolsos a alguns. 
Qualquer país europeu com 20% do que os EUA gastam em defesa faria mais e com melhores resultados.

🇺🇸 The US will begin construction of the first FF(X) frigate, with trials scheduled for 2028.

On January 8, HII Corporation CEO Chris Kastner announced that the keel of the lead frigate of the new FF(X) project, based on the Legend-class frigate, is ready to begin sea trials in 2028.

🔷 The ship will be armed with a 57mm gun mount, two 30mm automatic cannons, a RIM-116 close-in air defense system, and RGM-184A anti-ship missiles. VLS and anti-submarine warfare will not be installed in the initial phase.

🔵 The FF(X) program will replace the decommissioned Constellation class and is aimed at accelerating the addition of frigates to the US Navy to protect lines of communication and operate within naval strike groups, amid the growth of the Chinese Navy's fleet.

USS Zumwalt to put to Sea in 2026 without main gun systems

Upon the Zumwalt‘s return, she will be the first vessel armed with hyper-sonic missiles in United States Navy inventory, sporting 12 of the CPS missiles in the forward housing. The CPS modules are an almost complete copy of the cells destined for installation onboard future Block V Virginia-class fast attack submarines, with the installation on the Zumwalts providing almost one-to-one risk mitigation regarding any future implementation of the missile housings on other vessels.
