2013 was a bad year for the Syrian rebels. While the mainstream rebels struggled to defend their frontlines from the resurgent Assad regime, a renegade al Qaeda offshoot, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), launched a series of assaults on the formerly-dominant FSA brigades from behind, capturing their strongholds in rebel-held northern Syria and executing their commanders. Now the rebels are fighting back.

A coalition of former FSA brigades, funded by Saudi Arabia and rebranded as the Syrian Revolutionaries Front (or SRF), launched a surprise offensive against ISIS in the spring of 2014, in a campaign supported by both the Saudi and US governments. VICE News was the first western TV crew into Northern Syria for 6 months, embedding with the SRF as they reimposed their rule over the country's northwestern Idlib province. What we witnessed was a brief window into a complex and morally ambiguous conflict with no end in sight.

Syria: Isis Jihadists Hanging Victims on Public Crucifixes

By Jack Moore
April 30, 2014 10:24 GMT

The shocking photos show victims hanging from crucifixes in front of crowds in a Raqqa square.Facebook / Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently

The Islamic group which even al-Qaida has disowned for its brutality has been accused of hanging its executed victims from crosses in public squares in northern Syria.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (Isis) has taken control of the northern Syrian town of Raqqa where photographs show onlookers watching the hanging of victims from the cross in a public area, with Arabic terminology draped across their bodies.

Abu Ibrahim Alrquaoui, a co-founder of the Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently group, told Fox News that the victims are themselves Muslim rebels who fought against the Assad regime.

"It's very dangerous. They threaten us directly and want to kill us," said Alrquaoui.

"They want to stay in control. Everything they do is to scare people. That's why they kill people publicly," he continued.

The photographs could not be immediately verified and the means of execution, if true, could not be confirmed.

Isis rebels are infamous for their brutality, beheading victims and parading the severed heads to both crowds and video cameras.

The group is made of mainly foreign jihadists and is fighting to create an Islamic caliphate in the old Mesopotamia region which includes both Iraq and Syria.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, rebel-on-rebel violence has killed at least 2,300 people this year alone.

After disowning the group in February, al-Qaida's senior leadership said that Isis is "not an affiliate with the al-Qaida group and has no organisational relation with it."

Isis has defiantly disobeyed al-Qaida orders, following a path of greater brutality in the Syrian civil war, in conjunction with the group's draconian interpretation of Islamic law.

"I have to choose between the rule of God and the rule of [Ayman al] Zawahiri (leader of al-Qaida), and I choose the rule of God," said Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a leaked audio recording.

24 Syrians register to run in presidential election

DAMASCUS: A total of 24 Syrians have registered to run in next month's presidential election, including incumbent President Bashar al-Assad, the Supreme Constitutional Court announced Thursday as the application deadline expired.

The vote, scheduled for June 3, is expected to return to power Assad, the embattled president who has faced a three-year-old armed revolt. But there has been no shortage of would-be challengers.

The court will now spend five days examining the 24 hopefuls to see if they meet electoral criteria to run for office in Syria's first multi-candidate presidential vote.

A maximum of three candidates are expected to figure on the final list.

"At 3:00 pm (1200 GMT) on Thursday May 1, 2014, the period for submitting presidential candidacy ended," court head Adnan Zureiq said, quoted on state television.

"Twenty-four requests for candidacy for the post of Syrian president" had been submitted and the court would begin work Friday to examine which candidates met electoral criteria.

The results, he said, would be announced within five days.

To add their name on the ballot, candidates must win approval from at least 35 of parliament's 250 lawmakers, as well as meet criteria including having lived in Syria for the past decade.

The rules effectively ruled out the participation of the country's leading opposition figures, who are in exile.

The Baath party headed by Assad has 161 deputies, all of whom are expected to give him their support, meaning no more than two other candidates are likely to make the cut.

Assad's would-be challengers are all largely unknown and include two women and one Christian man.

Syria's constitution requires that candidates for the presidency be Muslim, but a source in the court said this week that all applications would be received and then examined in line with the rules.

The constitution contains no explicit prohibition on female candidates, but its phrasing implies only male candidates are permitted.

The election will be the first since a constitutional amendment scrapped a system of presidential referendums.

Assad, who succeeded his father in office in 2000, after his death, is expected to sweep to victory despite the brutal civil war ravaging the country.

More than 150,000 people have been killed, and nearly half the population has been displaced by the fighting.

The conflict has left large swathes of Syria beyond the control of the government, which has not explained how it will organise voting nationwide.

People rally across Syria, voice support for govt.

Tue May 13, 2014 4:22PM GMT

People across Syria have held massive rallies to voice their support for the incumbent government and the country’s army, which has been battling foreign-backed militants over the past three years.

On Tuesday, thousands of people converged on al-Jalaa Sport City in the capital Damascus to express support for the upcoming presidential election and the Syrian army, SANA news agency reported.

Some of the participants delivered speeches in which they described participation in the June 3 presidential vote as an obligation.

Additionally, a rally was held in the town of Mhambel in Idlib province. Demonstrators carried Syrian flags and chanted slogans in support of the government. They also voiced support for President Assad in the next month’s presidential election.

Elsewhere, thousands of citizens flooded the streets in al-Shammas neighborhood of the western city of Homs, located 162 kilometers (100 miles) north of Damascus, to voice their support for the Syrian government and army.

A pro-government rally was also staged in the southwestern city of As-Suwayda, where the demonstrators called upon all Syrians to participate in the forthcoming presidential election.

President Assad’s popularity has been on the rise following recent military gains. Assad’s government has also introduced a series of constitutional reforms, including reforms regarding the upcoming presidential vote.

Campaigning for Syria’s June 3 presidential election has started despite the foreign-backed militancy. The vote will be held in the government-controlled parts of the crisis-hit country. Syrians living abroad are also set to vote on May 28.

Last month, Syria dismissed Western and opposition accusations regarding its presidential election, saying that it is planning to hold a free and transparent vote.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Over 150,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the foreign-backed militants.

Syria crisis: Britons accused of brutal killings

Britons make up most of the foreign members in Syria's most violent terror group, a senior rebel leader says.

In a letter to The Times, Brig-Gen Abdulellah al-Basheer of the Free Syrian Army asks for help in curbing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

He claims the group attacks opposition forces, not the Assad regime

UK fighters are involved in activities including beheadings, crucifixions and ill-treatment of women, he adds.

In his letter, General al-Basheer writes that ignoring the problem could lead to British extremists returning home to "continue on their pernicious path of destruction".

Last week father-of-two Mashudur Choudhury became the first person in the UK to be convicted of terrorist offences in connection with the conflict in Syria.

Using the example of Choudhury, General al-Basheer writes: "He is one of many. They are not freedom fighters. They are terrorists."

He says the majority of non-Syrian members of the "predominantly foreign" Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a Sunni Islamist group, are from Britain. But he claims it includes fighters from Germany and France.

'Increasingly brutal threat'

He says there are also members from a range of countries across the Middle East, Africa and the Gulf and they pose an "increasingly brutal threat".

He writes: "We the Syrian people now experience beheadings, crucifixions, beatings, murders, outdated methods of treating women, an obsolete approach to governing society."

"Many who participate in these activities are British.

"The UK and US governments must support us to defeat terrorism in Syria and prevent it from being exported to Europe and the US."

General al-Basheer also claims that the group (which he refers to as ISIL, though it is also known as ISIS) kidnaps Free Syrian Army fighters and targets civilian homes in the city of Raqqa, instead of a nearby regime-controlled air base.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the Syrian conflict and millions displaced.

An estimated 500 Europeans are now fighting in Syria, according to the EU's anti-terror chief.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "The police and security services are actively working to detect and disrupt any terrorist threat from Syria and individuals who travel there.

"People who are thinking about travelling to Syria to engage in terrorist activity should be in no doubt that we will take the strongest possible action to protect our national security, including prosecuting those who break the law."
