North Korea recently launched its newest 5,000 tons destroyer, named the Choe Hyon, in Nampo on April 25, 2025.
Kim Jong Un attended the launch ceremony with his daughter, and boasted the vessel’s nuclear attack capability. A second vessel of its class is also under construction.
The most notable features are its assessed phased array radar panels and a large number of VLS cells. Based on imagery, this new destroyer seems to be equipped with 74 VLS cells of varying sizes, trading firepower over helicopter hangar.
The vessel will likely be equipped with DPRK’s suite of long range SAM, land attack cruise missiles, anti ship cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. DPRK state media claims that the vessel will carry strategic weapon systems, referring to nuclear-tipped missiles.
DPRK’s growing maritime capabilities and continued development of large surface combatants raise possibility of greater DPRK naval presence beyond its terrotorial waters.
