Work is underway on the first of two Airbus A400M transport aircraft ordered by the Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara (TNI-AU, Indonesian Air Force).Currently being constructed at Airbus' Seville plant, the first delivery is scheduled for late 2025. The construction number of the first A400M is 148.The A400M will bolster Indonesia’s Hercules fleet, particularly for aerial refueling missions, which currently rely on a single KC-130B aircraft.Initially, in 2018, the plan was to procure two aircraft for use in disaster relief missions as civil aviation assets, with support from the TNI-AU.By 2021, the defence budget for the two aircraft was approved, and the contract signed with Airbus included an option for four additional units.
Luxembourg spent €420 million to buy and operate one A400M
The Airbus A400M Atlas, known for its impressive payload capacity of up to 37 tons and versatile cargo hold, has already proven itself capable of transporting various armored vehicles such as the GTK Boxer. The Puma IFV, with its modular armor and advanced protection levels, required partial disassembly to remain within weight and dimension limits. Unlike lighter wheeled vehicles, the Puma’s tracked chassis and heavier protection packages posed a greater challenge for airlift. During this two-day operation, the vehicle was carefully pulled into the aircraft using the A400M’s onboard winch system, while hydraulically extendable stabilizers ensured the landing gear remained within safe stress limits, a crucial detail for maintaining the aircraft’s structural integrity during loading and flight.Level A (Basic Configuration):31.4 tons (69,225 lb). This configuration is designed for rapid deployment via A400M aircraft and is immediately operational upon unloading.
