Singapore has confirmed that work on the planned upgrade to its fleet of Lockheed-Martin F-16C/D Fighting Falcon jets will start in 2016, according to Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.In an interview on 26 June, Ng also revealed that the upgrading work on the Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF's) F-16s will be conducted in phases and is expected to last five to six years.A factsheet issued by Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) added that the upgrade will "equip the F-16s with an all-weather, ground-attack capability, enabling it to strike targets with more capable precision munitions such as the Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition (LJDAM)".It added that the upgraded F-16s will also be integrated with modern advanced visual range air-to-air weapons, datalink capability, and the helmet mounted displays. A new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar will extend the F-16's detection range and enable the fighter aircraft to track and engage multiple targets at greater distances.MINDEF declined to provide further details to IHS Jane's queries, citing ongoing negotiations with contractors, although US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) notifications issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) have outlined requests for Link 16 datalinks, Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing Systems, and integration of the AIM-9X Sidewinder as part of the upgrade package.Documents published at the US Federal Register have also revealed that the AESA radar requested by Singapore is the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar. Singapore has also requested integration for several different air-to-ground weapons in two separate FMS notifications: the GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition, GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb, CBU-105 Sensor Fuzed Weapon, and GBU-49/50 Enhanced Paveway II dual-mode guided bombs.
