Nova fragata Dinamarquesa em construção

FFG Ivar Huitfeldt class
Notes: These three advanced missile frigates are Danish-designed and built; they will complement and protect the Absalon-class LKAs. They represent a shift in Danish naval philosophy from defending the Baltic to open-ocean power projection. These frigates have fifteen watertight compartments, and will be NBC-sealed and fully air-conditioned. They are intended to be extremely sea-worthy (part of the operations envelope includes missions off Greenland) and the designers claim they can successfully operate a helicopter at 20kts speed in bad weather.
The ships have a massive SAM loadout; additionally it has been discussed to equip them with BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles to add a surface strike capability as well. As of February 2010 no decision had been made on this.
The engine rooms are separated to prevent a single lucky hit from disabling the ship. The funnels are unusually staggered because of this. There are also one Caterpillar 3512 1360kW and one Caterpillar 3508 920kW diesel generators for electrical power separate from the main engines.
The ships will likely visit the UK during their pre-commissioning trials for final installation work and activation of the APAR radar directly by Thales technicians. They have intended design lifetimes of at least 30 years.
Project timeline
Capability studies and long-lead items were ordered in December 2006, with initial costruction scheduling for F-361 starting in 2007. In February 2008 the final go-ahead for all three was given. Ivar Huitfeldt was laid down on 2 June 2008, Peter Willemoes on 12 March 2009, and Niels Juel on 22 December 2009. On 12 August 2009, some critical equipment being imported from the United States (namely, the Mk41 VLS systems for all four ships) arrived in Denmark. By February 2010, Ivar Huitfeldt was nearing structural completion.
