On October 12, 1964, during its third test flight, its first supersonic, the paint of the XB-70 was torn off in entire patches on nearly 15% of the surface. This happened because a too-thick coat of paint had been applied to make it look good for the top brass. The thick paint was brittle and when the metal of the airframe flexed in flight, the paint chipped and was torn off by the airflow. A thinner coat of paint solved the problem.
