Taste Overhaul for Troop Rations
(Source: 10 Downing Street; issued Aug. 18, 2004)
Over 10,000 soldiers, sailors and air personnel are trying out new ration packs that reflect modern taste buds.
Current options already include Halal and vegetarian meals, but others were starting to reflect yesterday’s tastes. The trial aims to introduce more contemporary meals into the Operational Ration Packs, used when troops are on exercise.
Depending on the outcomes of the trials, the solider of the future is more likely to be tucking into chicken balti with rice, rather than basic stews and casseroles.
The armed forces are also considering the introduction of isotonic, high energy drinks and snacks to provide additional energy and help troops to re-hydrate in hot climates.
Director of the Defence Catering Group, Brigadier Jeff Little, said food is not just fuel for the body, but a key element in keeping morale high.
“The aim is a twenty-first century ration pack tuned to the needs of the twenty-first century soldier and the wide variety of operational environments in which he or she may be deployed,” he said.
