Italian Opposition Senators Delay Garibaldi Ship Transfer to Indonesia
The planned free transfer of the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi to Indonesia has been delayed after Italian opposition senators from the Democratic Party (PD) and Five Star Movement (M5S) successfully postponed Parliament’s approval vote. Senators Alessandro Alfieri and Graziano Delrio cited concerns over transparency, including the role of Italian defense company Drass, which is also involved in a €480 million submarine contract with Indonesia.
According to the Italian Ministry of Defence, the ship has reached the end of its operational lifecycle and is currently in reserve. The transfer is framed as a move to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation while avoiding ongoing maintenance and decommissioning costs. Parliament now awaits additional clarifications from Minister Guido Crosetto before moving forward with the operation.
