On this day, the 2nd of January 1492, Muhammad XII, the last muslim ruler in Spain formally surrendered the Emirate of Granada and returned the territories to Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile.
For the first time in nearly eight centuries, the Iberian peninsula was once again under Catholic, European control, completing the Reconquista.
What started as small bands of brave men resisting in a time of hopelessness and despair, grew into the total reconquering of Southern France, Spain and Portugal from the muslim invaders, ushering in a true golden age.
