European Commissioner Kubilius Visits Portugal to Boost Defense and Space CooperationEuropean Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius will visit Portugal on January 7–8, making his first trip to the country. The European Commission’s press service reports on the trip preparations.

In Porto on January 7, the European commissioner will meet with the Minister of National Defence Nuno Melo to discuss the readiness of European defence, the implementation of the SAFE defense loan program, and further support for Ukraine
During the diplomatic seminar led by Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, Kubilius, together with Minister Melo and Deputy Secretary General of NATO Radmila Šekerinska, will address the ambassadors of Portugal to outline the prospects for future European defence and cooperation in this area.
Also on the itinerary is a visit to the CEiiA Center for Engineering Developments, which works on innovative solutions in aerospace, mobility, and space.
In Lisbon on January 8, Kubilius will meet with the leadership of the Portuguese Air Force. Hearings are also planned in the parliamentary committees on European affairs and defence, as well as a meeting with the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Fernando Alexandre to discuss space policy. At the end, a round table with leading stakeholders in the defence and space sectors is planned.
Europe has a strong space potential and a culture of cooperation, exemplified by the Galileo and Copernicus programs, as well as projects such as the Atlantic Constellation, supported by NextGenerationEU and based on a partnership between Portugal and Spain, with the aim of creating a complete satellite value chain to enable advanced Earth observation capabilities for defense and environmental applications.
