Gostaria saber se houveram sobreviventes paraquedistas da Divisão 82 Airborne em Sainte-Mère-Église, no dia de 6 de Junho de 1944, por volta das 02h50, do qual cujo Soldado John M. Steele q ficou lá pendurado no torre da Igreja durante horas ao ouvir o sino a tocar, do qual ficou surdo temporariamente. Assistiu a chacina que a guarnição alemão atiraram-se de fogo pesado às paraquedistas em alvos fáceis.

Problema, é que tentei a pesquisar no net, se houveram sobreviventes. Quantos eram naquela altura, os de que escaparam? E quantas eram baixas? Em que divisão alemão pertencia? Se houve encontro anual entre os americanos e os alemães a homenagear, juntos?!

Já o tinha visto no filme "The Longest Day" mas, não haverá mais outro filme sobre isto?

A 82ª tinha três regimentos páraquedistas (505, 507 e 508) e um regimento reforçado de planadores. Após o salto foram reforçados pela 325th GIR.
Garantido que houve sobreviventes, apesar de:

By the time the All-American Division was pulled back to England on July 13, 1944, it had seen 33 days of bloody combat and suffered 5,245 paratroopers killed, wounded or missing. The Division's post battle report read, "...33 days of action without relief, without replacements. Every mission accomplished. No ground gained was ever relinquished."

Penso que a pior "matança" de uma unidade da 82ª foi na Batalha do Bulge, nas Ardenas, em que o 551st PIR (que não era exactamente da Divisão mas estava sob seu controlo administrativo) ficou conhecido como "The Lost Battalion", já que 4/5 do seu efectivo inicial (c.700 homens) ficaram feridos ou foram mortos (ver aqui a citação presidencial)

Um texto que encontrei:

Rochelinval saw the death of an American Parachute Battalion in an epically heroic attack.

The battalion was the 551st PIR known as the G.O.Y.As for their motto of “Get of Your Ass. They were an independent parachute battalion, who had spearheaded the invasion of Southern France, Operation Dragoon.

The by late 1944 the battalion was administratively under the control of the 82nd Airborne Division and in early Jan was ordered to capture Rochelinval, where the bridge over the Salm River offered a last possible escape route for the German Army in the northern sector of the "bulge" that pushed into American lines.

The 551st Battalion went head to head against the German 62nd Volksgrenadier Division in the attack.

The 551st began the attack on the 3 Jan 1945 with 790 men. The initial attack lost 40 percent in 2 days. There was then a desperate bayonet charge on Jan. 5 which began to turn the tide, and two days later the troops took Rochelinval. In the 4 days it took the unit to capture Rochelinval the 551st had lost 680 men including the commanding office LTC Wood Joerg.

For the attack the 551st was promised Artillery support. There were a total of 4 rounds fired on the 3rd and that was all the 551st got for the whole attack. Other units in the sector such as the 504th PIR received over 1000 rounds on the 3rd.

The loss of the battalion must have caused much embarrassment to General Gavin of the 82nd, under whose command the 551st was for the battle. On 10 Feb barely a month after the attack the 551st was disbanded.

It wasn’t until 23 Feb 2001 that the 551st was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for the attack. It took the Department of Defense 46 years to rectify an oversight and “present the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in a unit under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions”.

There are less then 40 members of the 551st PIR alive today

Pela Divisão Alemão 352??! Como é possível se foram deslocado tão rapidamente para Omaha Beach, ao alvorecer de manhã, ás 06,32 metralhando os norte-americanos da companhia 29 Divisão e 2ªDivisão??

Significa que ñ haviam guarnições alemães na Omaha Beach desde 2 da manhã até ás 6h??!

"Get of your Ass"?? Esse teve piada. Quem a inventou? Coronel? Ou seja foi responsável de Batalhão/Regimento?

Já agora, e a título de curiosidade, uma das últimas adições à coleção de mapas do areamilitar:

As tropas alemãs em 5 de Junho de 1944
em Areamilitar: 06 de Junho 1944

As melhores divisões de infantaria alemã era a 91ª e a 352ª
As outras eram divisões de guarnição, onde até havia soldados do Kirguistão.

No flanco direito, estavam as duas divisões Panzer (uma delas pertencente às SS). São estas duas divisões (que estavam espalhadas pelo terreno e não concentradas) que vão avançar e impedir o avanço dos britânicos e canadianos. Por esta razão o desembarque dos britânicos e canadianos foi mais «pacifico» mas o seu avanço sobre Caen foi muito difícil.

Já no sector americano, as unidades de melhor qualidade estavam mais próximo das praias e por isso os americanos tiveram mais dificuldades no inicio e puderam avançar com mais facilidade posteriormente.
