RAF 14 Squadron drops historic nickname following complaint
(30 de Julho de 2024)
Citação de: alert5
A longstanding tradition at the Royal Air Force’s 14 Squadron has come to an end following a formal complaint. The squadron, formed in 1915 and nicknamed the "Crusaders" after its involvement in operations over Gaza and Palestine during World War I, has been ordered to remove all references to the name.

The decision follows a complaint alleging that the nickname was offensive to Muslims, given the historical context of the Crusades. Despite widespread support for retaining the name among squadron members, the RAF upheld the complaint, citing a need to align with modern values and avoid giving prominence to potentially offensive terms.

The squadron's history is deeply intertwined with the Middle East, with subsequent involvement in conflicts such as the first Gulf War and the Kosovo War.

While acknowledging the historical significance of the nickname, the RAF emphasized that certain traditions may no longer be appropriate in modern society. The squadron, currently operating Shadow R1 surveillance aircraft from RAF Waddington, will retain its royal crest, approved by King George VI in 1937.

The decision has sparked debate within the RAF and broader public, with some criticizing the move as an erasure of history. Others argue that the change reflects a necessary shift in societal attitudes and the importance of inclusivity.

The RAF has emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, stating that while traditions and nicknames hold historical value, they must align with contemporary standards.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by organizations in balancing historical legacy with the sensitivities of the present day.

RED ALERT! Red Arrows are DISAPPEARING in 2030! (Fast Jet Performance, 6 de Janeiro de 2025)

Is this finally the end of the road for the Red Arrows? Iconic jets are approaching their deathbed, with NO replacements lined up
(4 de Janeiro de 2025)
Citação de: Daily Mail
They're the iconic jets that dazzle crowds with their breathtaking air acrobatics.

But the Red Arrows are in serious danger of being hibernated, veterans fear.

No replacements are lined up for the existing ageing fleet of Hawk T1s, scheduled to be retired in 2030.

Ex-RAF pilots fear the high number of hours flown, uncovered by MailOnline's probe, will force them to be stood down earlier unless they are preserved.

For fans, this could result in very limited displays, with little aerobatics to expand the lifespan of the jets.

A former RAF fast-jet pilot told MailOnline: 'If they don't get new aircraft, the Reds are finished.'

All of the 16 jets currently in operation – stationed at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire – are approaching 50 years old. The youngest is 43.

Ministers insist the Hawk T1s – engineered by BAE Systems and powered with Rolls-Royce engines – will fly until the planned out-of-service date.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage told MailOnline: 'It would be a national disgrace if we lost the Red Arrows.'

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) source said 'there are plenty of hours left to get them to 2030 and, indeed, well beyond if necessary'.

No decision on their replacement will be made until after Labour's Strategic Defence Review is finished this spring.

Over the past two decades, there has been speculation that the Red Arrows could be axed entirely to save taxpayer cash.

In 2015, then-Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon declared that disbanding the unit is 'not a fight he would like to have', adding that: 'I don't think the public would let us lose the Red Arrows.'

He said at the time Government would 'start to think about' how to replace the ageing aircraft in the 'next year or two'.

Bristol-based Aeralis is in line to win the multi-million pound deal to build new jets for the Red Arrows, which celebrated its 60th 'Diamond Season' in 2024.
