By Lance Cpl. M. Daniel Sanchez, MCAS Yuma

Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 401 F-5N Tiger II pilots, Lt. Col. Geoffrey Olander (tan flight suit on the left) and Maj. Kevin Reece (tan flight suit on the right), pose with F-5 pilots from the Royal Moroccan Air Force during exercise African Lion, Sept. 10-21 at Meknes Air Base, Morocco. Olander and Reece taught the Moroccan F-5 pilots how to conduct air-to-air refueling.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. (Sept. 27, 2007) -- Two pilots from Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401, the station’s only 4th Marine Aircraft Wing squadron, participated in Exercise African Lion Sept. 10-21 at Meknes Air Base, Morocco.

VMFT-401 F-5N Tiger II pilots, Maj. Kevin Reece and Lt. Col. Geoffrey Olander, strapped up and flew out with the Royal Moroccan Air Force.

The Adversary Marines participated in the annual joint-military exercise, to teach the foreign F-5 pilots about air-to-air refueling and make aerial refueling instructors to continue that training.

Reece, who is a native of Niagara Falls, N. Y., said they were teaching the Moroccans how to conduct aerial refueling because it is a capability the Royal Moroccan Air Force has not had for about 20 years.

The Moroccan military’s air refueling program never really got off the ground, explained Reece.

Reece, who had not trained with the Moroccan military in the past, said he wasn’t sure what to expect at first.

The skills and abilities of the pilots being trained is one of the major factors instructors think about, said Reece. However, the Moroccan’s had capable, hard-working pilots who were able to pick up the training quickly.

As a squadron, they had an incredible learning curve and did a good job of preparing each new class of pilots, said Reece.

The Moroccan airmen made sure everyone was already familiar with the operational terms and concepts before they participated in the training, which helped to move things along, said Reece.

Although Reece and Olander were the instructors, they still walked away with some new knowledge of their own.

Moroccan F-5s have upgraded avionics packs, which improve their tactical and inclement weather capabilities, said Reece.

The avionics pack consists of improved radar, navigation, heads-up display, and several other equipment improvements.

This is definitely the type of equipment that could help the Adversaries in their mission, said Reece. If countries around the world are using these, VMFT-401 should have them as well.

However, the trip was not all work. Reece and Olander also took in the scenery and the culture of Morocco.
After the morning flights, all the pilots would go out to eat together to get their minds off the job, said Reece.

“The food was really good,” said Reece, “I got to eat some Taine and Harira soup.”

Tagine is a North African dish that is slow cooked at low temperatures. It consists of various types of meat, vegetables and sauce and is made in a special cooking pot of the same name, according to www.cuisinenet.com (http://www.cuisinenet.com).

Harira is a soup usually eaten during dinner in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to break the day’s fast.

Reece also said he and Olander, who is a native of Boston, were able to learn about Ramadan and a different side of the Muslim culture while in Morocco.

The vast majority of the people in Meknes are of the Muslim faith and were observing the
holy month, which meant they would not eat from sunrise to sunset for the duration of the month, said Reece.

The city sets off huge cannons to signal the end of the day’s fast and the first night was a little rough because the blasts came unexpectedly, said Reece, commenting on how the cannon blasts took him by surprise.

Reece said the people of Morocco were very friendly and did not mind if they ate during the day.

Even Moroccan pilots who were scheduled to fly were exempt from the fast for that day, said Reece.

Morocco was a great place to train and their culture was amazing, said Reece

Working with other countries just helps to further the cause of freedom and these types of international military exercises are critical for building a strong base of support around the world, said Reece.

“You can never have enough friends and this shows there are nations that see America as a force for good,” he said.

The fact is, in that part of the world there is a contest for freedom going on and someone has to win, said Reece

Moroccan VIP Jet Gets LAIRCM

Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation of Rolling Meadows, IL received a firm-fixed price contract modification for $15 million, pursuant to a letter contract for foreign military sales case number MO-D-QAD for one Moroccan Head of State Aircraft Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) system. LAIRCM has become a popular way to protect large transport aircraft; it uses sensors to detect incoming infared-guided missiles, then throws it off course using targeted laser pulses. The exact aircraft was not specified, but based on the Alkowat al malakiya al jawiya’s order of battle, our bet is on the transcontinental Falcon 50 business jet based at Rabat Sale.

The contract will include hardware, support equipment and services to include but not limited to: systems engineering, program management, logistics, spares as well as installation, installation support, and field service support. This effort support foreign military sales to Morocco. At this time, $3 million has been obligated. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH will issue the contract (FA8625-08-C-6479).

The US DSCA has formally announced

Morocco's request for 60 M109A5 155mm self-propelled howitzers, 30 HMMWV engines, 233 wheel assemblies, spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, Quality Assurance Team support services, U.S. Government logistics personnel services, and other related elements of logistics support. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $29 million; if no Congressional opposition blocks the proposed sale within 30 days, the parties will be free to finalize a contract and complete the procurement.

There will be a U.S. Government Quality Assurance Team in country for 1 year to check out the equipment. A Technical Assistance Field Team also will participate for 2-week intervals twice annually, to participate in program management and technical reviews.

Morocco currently operates earlier version M109A1B self-propelled howitzers, and will use this new procurement to retire older artillery pieces and modernize its Army's fire support capability. On the US end, the equipment is considered long supply and is no longer utilized by the U.S. Government. The M109A5 stops short of the full M109A6 'Paladin' upgrade fielded with many US units, but it does feature a number of electronics and mechanical improvements. With Morocco's neighbor and rival Algeria in the middle of a $7.5 billion Russian arms buy, the country is looking to make judicious purchases that upgrade its own capabilities – French Rafale jets are also rumored to be in the pipeline.

Israel and Morocco hold F-5 upgrade discussions

MOROCCO AND ISRAEL are in secret negotiations over the latter country providing an upgrade of Moroccan air force Northrop F-5.

The negotiations are believed to cover the upgrade of around 20 F-5s, which the air force uses in the fighter/ground-attack role. If successfully concluded, the deal would be the first Israeli upgrade of military equipment for a Muslim state.

Morocco and Israel have recently established partial diplomatic relations. "Interest offices" in each country are used as the channel for growing economic relations.

The air force of Morocco operates some 20 F-5E/Fs, and the upgrade programme is aimed at enhancing their combat capability. Two Israeli companies, Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and Elbit, are offering to carry out the work.

IAI has upgraded the F-5s of the Chilean air force and Elbit is upgrading Singaporean F-5s.

Potential elements of either upgrade could include improved cockpit avionics, including head-up displays, multi-function displays and weapons-delivery and navigation systems. Weapons upgrades could include the Rafael Python 3 infra-red-guided short-range air-to-air missile, with a variety of air-to-surface weaponry also on offer.

Israel will supply ten Rafael Litening laser designation and navigation pods to Romania as part of its Mikoyan MiG-21MF Fishbed upgrade

72= 1200M$................X= 100M$, de donde X = 6.

72= 1200M$................X= 100M$, de donde X = 6.

2005 Morocco contract with Russia placed in 2005 for 6 Tunguska-M1 air defense system to be delivered beginning in 2006. The contract was valued at $100 million and the Russian contractor was Almaz-Antey

24x5= 120 véhicules
6x5 = 30 véhicules

"A Tunguska-M1 battery is composed of up to six vehicles"
http://www.army-technology.com/projects/tunguska/
http://www.armyrecognition.com/Russe/vehicule_artillerie/2S6_Tungunska/Tungunska_Russia_description.htm

(https://www.forumdefesa.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg136.imageshack.us%2Fimg136%2F2624%2Fescadrondereconnaissancrv6.jpg&hash=8a1bd20a073dcfc19c23785823e9c75f)

Comoran president says Morocco helped end Anjouan revolt

Comoran President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi revealed that his country received military aid from Morocco to help crush a rebellion on Anjouan, in his address at an Arab summit in Damascus on Saturday.

"It is no secret that we won because Morocco provided all it could in military aid," Sambi told delegates.

"My country came out of a difficult tunnel a few days ago when it regained control of the island of Anjouan, and we look to your sincere efforts to help us build a new phase in the Comoros islands," he said.

Mohamed Bacar, the 45-year-old renegade leader of Anjouan -- one of the Comoros Union's three islands -- was ousted on Tuesday in a joint military operation by government forces and African Union-mandated troops from Sudan and Tanzania.

Morocco, which is not a member of the AU, was not involved in the action but it has supplied arms to Moroni in the past, as has Libya. The Comoros asked its allies, including Arab states, to help fund the action.

Bacar managed to flee Anjouan and found refuge in Mayotte, which is the fourth island in the tiny Indian Ocean archipelago and opted to remain French when the rest of the Comoros acquired independence in 1975.

T-90 exports
In the recent years the T-90 MBT, the export variant of which is called T-90S, has secured important export victories making it one of the most successful export MBTs of the last decade.

The first large contract was with India, for delivery of 310 MBTs (124 complete MBTs and 186 kits assembled by Indian enterprises); worth USD 700mln, it has been signed in February 2001 and concluded in 2004. The majority of supplied tanks has the welded turret, and they are equipped with the new 1000hp V-92S2 Chelyabinsk diesel and Essa night sight. They are not, however, equipped with the Shtora EOCMDAS, though there are reports that a separate contract for shipment of a modernized version of this suite is being discussed. According to the Indian newspapers, India plans to produce another 1000 T-90S MBTs (called "Bhishma" in Indian service) by 2020, which will require shipment of more components from Russia. In addition to this license arrangement, in October 2006 it was reported by Jane's that a new contract has been concluded, that will see another 330 full T-90S kits delivered to India.

A new deal has recently been concluded with Algeria. It is reported to be worth USD 1bln and involves shipment between 2007 and 2011 of 180 MBTs together with assorted ammunition, training means and support equipment. The tanks intended for Algeria (designated T-90SA) are mostly similar to the Indian ones, except that the kit includes laser sensors and anti-FLIR smoke grenades of Shtora EOCMDAS, an air conditioner, a KMT-8 mine sweep, and "Nakidka" thermal/radar/optical camouflage shroud.

There are reports that two more deals, with Lybia and Morocco, are in the works.

Morocco - M109A5 155mm Self-propelled Howitzers
WASHINGTON, August 3, 2007 - The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Morocco of M109A5 155mm self-propelled howitzers as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $29 million.
The Government of Morocco has requested a possible sale of 60 M109A5 155mm self-propelled howitzers, 30 High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle engines, 233 wheel assemblies, spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, Quality Assurance Team support services, U. S. Government logistics personnel services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $29 million.
This sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in North Africa.
Morocco currently operates M109A1B self-propelled howitzers and will use this new procurement to re-equip existing units, retire older artillery pieces, and modernize the Army’s fire support capability. Morocco will have no difficulty absorbing the howitzers into its armed forces.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region.
No contractor is involved for this purchase of the howitzers. Equipment is considered long supply and is no longer utilized by the U.S. Government.
There will be a U.S. Government Quality Assurance Team in country for one year to check out the equipment. A Technical Assistance Field Team also will participate for two-week intervals twice annually to participate in program management and technical reviews.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded

6/15/2010 By Maj. Paul Greenberg , Marine Forces Reserve

CAP DRAA TRAINING AREA, Morocco — U.S. service members taking part in African Lion 2010 wrapped up their training here June 9 in a final combined arms exercise with the Royal Moroccan Army.

“African Lion in Morocco is very important for both the Marine Corps and the United States government. This is a strategic relationship with one of the United States’ oldest allies,” said Marine Corps Reserve Maj. Gordon Hilbun, assistant operations officer for Task Force African Lion. “This relationship maintains a strong collaborative training opportunity for both militaries and ensures that the Marine Corps maintains its expeditionary capabilities and mindset.

More than 1,000 Marines, sailors and U.S. Air and Army national guardsmen participated in African Lion this year, with the preponderance of troops coming from Marine Forces Reserve units throughout the United States.
This is the seventh year in a row that U.S. troops have come here for this exercise, which Marine Corps Forces Africa, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, has the lead on facilitating.

The final exercise was a culmination of more than four months of planning, mass logistical movements and detailed coordination between U.S. and Moroccan diplomatic and military leadership.
In the exercise scenario, several enemy mechanized units had intentionally crossed into Moroccan territory. A joint U.S. and Moroccan task force was formed to repulse the enemy with a combination of air and ground capabilities. These included helicopters, tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, mortars, combat engineers and mobile assault platoons.

After Moroccan Kornet guided missiles initiated the attack, combat engineers from 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Roanoake, Va., used their Bangalore torpedoes to blast a hole through the breach.
“It was excellent,” said Cpl. John Saunders, a reserve Marine with 4th CEB who helped to emplace the 33 pounds of high explosives and secured the fuse igniter systems. “Our goal from the time we dismounted, emplaced the charge and withdrew was 90 seconds, and we beat it. When that bunker buster went off, it was incredible.”

The Moroccan Army provided the air power with Gazelle helicopters strafing their targets with missiles.

U.S. and Moroccan tanks closed in, hammering old tank hulks with high-explosive rounds and machine gun fire.
The American M1A1 Abrams tanks came from Company F, 4th Tank Battalion headquartered at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

“It was a good show, and great practice maneuvering and firing as a platoon,” said platoon commander 2nd Lt. Peter Heiman, who is on his first deployment as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserve. “The Moroccan tankers seem to really know their stuff.”

Heiman explained that earlier in the week, he and his Marines had the chance to meet with the Moroccan tankers, climb inside their tanks and shoot their weapons.

“It was really great training,” said Heiman, “One of their sergeants had been on the same tank for 26 years. One thing I can say is that they’re really experienced.”

Cpl. Matthew Ross, a 23-year-old vehicle commander with 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in Quantico, Va., also had the chance to work with Moroccan troops prior to and during the final exercise.

“My initial impression is that they are very professional,” said Ross, a five-year reserve Marine who is a senior at Georgetown University. “They know what they need to be doing at all times. There is no laissez faire leadership. They’re like us; mission oriented. They always knew what was going on.”

A linguistics major with a focus on Arabic and Dari languages, the exercise gave a Ross both a chance to exert his leadership as a first-time vehicle command and to practice Arabic with the Moroccan soldiers.

“There are a lot of things you can take away from the exercise,” said Ross. “It proves to the Marines that you can work with a foreign military force in a (military to military) exercise and see that they can have an equal level of professionalism. We can integrate with foreign militaries if the mission dictates. The Marines at the (noncommissioned officer) level have confidence that they can work successfully with a foreign military that speaks another language, and with a culture that is really different. There is a very specific commonality between them and our Marines: military professionalism.”

While the tanks were blasting away at their targets, Marine Corps mortarmen from Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment fired their 81 millimeter mortar rounds.

“This was a very positive experience overall,” said Sgt. Timothy Gena a reserve Marine mortars section leader with Weapons Company, who also had the chance to train with his Moroccan counterparts prior to the final exercise.

“They have the French and Spanish versions of the weapons (81 millimeter mortars), but it’s the same concept. What was amazing is that we were able to work with them without an interpreter, and these guys, (the Moroccans) were really good. This kind of thing is very important, especially for the junior Marines, who may not have done this before, or who might have had a negative experience in the past. It’s great to come here for (annual reserve training) and come away with a respect for the Moroccans. I think we had a mutual respect here.”

While the troops on the ground put the pincers on the notional enemy forces, the U.S. and Moroccan senior leadership sat together watching the fiery show from a vantage point on a hill nearby.

After the successful completion of the live-fire, Moroccan Gen. Abdul Al Aziz Benani, General of the Royal Moroccan Army Corps, spoke to the American delegation, which included Samuel L. Kaplan, the U.S. ambassador to Morocco, and Marine Corps Reserve Maj. Gen. James M. Croley, the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general.

“This is a beautiful thing, when you shoot and hit your target,” said Benani. “I want to tell you how satisfied we are, and I want to thank you for your work to make this exercise successful.”

Although this year’s African Lion has come to a close, U.S. and Moroccan planners are already looking at next year’s exercise, which is expected to bring even more Marine Forces Reserve units here and involve a broader range of U.S. and Moroccan troops.

“The evolution of this exercise would entail an amphibious offload and a larger training force to include expanding our current combined training relationship with Moroccan forces,” said Hilbun. “Marine Forces Africa is becoming a focus of effort for the Marine Corps. This exercise provides us with continued access to one of our key strategic partners in Africa as the United States continues to maintain a national focus on expanding our involvement on the African continent.”

TORNADOES EXERCISE IN MOROCCAN AIRSPACE AFTER SPAIN’S REFUSAL

by Brian Reyes

Spain refused permission for the Royal Air Force Tornadoes currently in Gibraltar to use a Spanish-controlled NATO exercise area in the Mediterranean, it emerged yesterday.

The RAF jets were told to avoid Spanish airspace and stay in an adjacent zone controlled by Morocco, which had raised no concerns as to their presence.

British military jets en route to or from Gibraltar routinely avoid flying over Spanish airspace because of Madrid's objections.

But the RAF has regularly used the NATO training area in the past and the block on this occasion came as a surprise.

"We originally applied to the Spanish, who control the airspace in the northern half of the Mediterranean training area and, simultaneously, to the Moroccans who control the southern half," a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.

"The Moroccans gave us authority to use the southern half on the dates in question whilst the Spanish refused our request."

"In recent memory, this is the first time they've turned down a request without offering a good reason for it,"

In any event, the impasse did not impact on the exercise itself, which was conducted with good results in Moroccan airspace.

Caro Old,
Eu equivoquei-me em 2 pontos ?

AIRSHOW-General Atomics sees growing demand for drones

Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:48pm EDT

* Exports approved to Saudi Arabia and others

* US Navy considering use on aircraft carriers

By Andrea Shalal-Esa

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 20 (Reuters) - General Atomics, which has already sold 435 Predator drones in recent years, sees growing demand for its unmanned planes, including a high-flying new successor to the Predator being considered by the U.S. Navy for use on aircraft carriers as soon as 2018.

General Atomics has already received export licenses to sell an unarmed export version of the Predator to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, U.A.E. and Morocco, and has applied for a license to sell to Pakistan, said company spokeswoman Kimberly Kasitz. :G-beer2:

The plane is widely used in Iraq and Afghanistan by U.S. troops, and is also flown by Italy, Turkey and Britain.

Its use in nearly one hundred missile strikes on Pakistani territory, as cited by the Washington-based New America Foundation, has triggered debate over the ethics of "robot warfare."

Christopher Ames, a retired Navy admiral and head of General Atomics' business development, said his company had benefitted by spending its own money to develop new technologies before pitching them to the Pentagon, and it continues to do the same thing with follow-on variants.

"We're an example of how the system should work," he said in an interview at the Farnborough Airshow.

Chairman Neal Blue, who bought the company from General Dynamics for $50 million in 1986, acknowledged in 2008 Defense News interview that the company spent about 11 percent of its annual revenues on research and development, a level far higher than most publicly traded defense companies.

Blue began work on an unmanned plane about two decades ago, long before drones became as widespread as they are now. His ability to continuing working on the planes, without the pressure of shareholders demanding short-term returns, helped nurture a technology now synonomous with modern warfare.

"It's an exciting time," Ames told Reuters at the Farnborough Airshow, noting that he was drawn to General Atomics because of the promise of unmanned planes.

As a naval strike group commander after the 2004 tsunami, Ames had to divert helicopters that could have been delivering food and water to survivors to scour the seas for survivors.

"If we had had the Predator ... even just one, it would have saved lives," he said.

The Avenger model had a first flight in April and is now in flight testing. The drone flies at speeds of around 400 knots and can reach 50,000 feet, about 15,000 feet shy of the altitude achieved by Northrop Grumman Corp's (NOC.N) Global Hawk, at a fraction of the price.

It can carry the same kind of sophisticated cameras and sensors as Global Hawk, but unlike the higher-flying Northrop plane, General Atomics' Avenger can carry weapons, Ames said, noting that the new plane could well factor into the Pentagon's plans to develop a new long-range strike capability.

Those capabilities, coupled with a low cost of $4 million to $15 million, have sparked growing demand from the military, from U.S. homeland security officials and from many foreign countries such as Britain, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Australia and Spain, Ames said.

"They're proven. They're affordable. It's a no-brainer," Ames said.

Spokeswoman Kasitz said the company's success had generated strong interest from other defense contractors interested in acquiring the privately held San Diego-based company. But Blue told her again on Tuesday, "We are constantly approached by other companies and we are not interested in selling."

August 3, 2010: Without any fanfare at all, Morocco has bought 150 Chinese VT1A/MBT 2000 tanks. These are export versions of the Type 98/99, although they also look similar to the Type 90/Al Khalid (a Type 90 variant developed by China and Pakistan for Pakistani service). The most modern tanks China has are the Type 98 and 99, which come close to matching early models of the U.S. M-1. Compared to the Type 98/99, the VT1A is a 14 percent lighter  (at 49 tons) tank. It has a three man crew and an auto-loader for its 125mm gun. There is a 7.62 coaxial machine-gun and a 12.7mm machine-gun on top of the turret. The 1200 horsepower engine moves the VT1A at road speeds of up to 70 kilometers an hour. Range on the road is 450 kilometers. Armor is a combination of composite and ERA (explosive reactive armor). The VT1A lacks the most modern ERA and some of the electronics found on the latest Chinese models (98 and 99).

The Type 98/99/90/VT1A vehicles are all "improved T-72s." Lots of improvements, though, many of them similar to what's found in the Russian T-80UM2. The workmanship on these vehicles is a little better than on the T-80UM2, but the Chinese don't have as much experience building tanks. This has shown itself in the numerous technical glitches that have shown up. The basic T-72 design has been around for over 30 years and has proved reliable, although not particularly effective on the battlefield. That was mostly due to poor crews. The Chinese moved to volunteer crews and more intensive training, which makes any tank more effective.

Azerbaijan and Russia hold negotiations on “Pantsir-S1” surface-to-air missile system

15:17 13-02-2012
Russia holds negotiations with several countries on sale of “Pantsir-S1” surface-to-air missile system.

APA reports that Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are among the countries showing interest to the missile complex code-named by NATO as SA-22 Greyhound. Russia is reportedly holding negotiations with those countries.

The orders were received from Algeria and Morocco for “Pantsir-S1” which is included to the arsenal of armed forces of Russia, Syria, Iran, UAE and Oman.

The “Pantsir-S1”, which is designed for air defense of military facilities at short range, can open fire at the targets in 20-km distance. The complex also includes radar system. The “Pantsir-S1”, which has different modifications, replaces Tunguska complex of the Russian army.

Morocco has requested an FMS sale of 200 refurbished US Army M1A1 Abrams tanks upgraded to SA configuration, and related kit, at a cost of just over $1 billion. (US Army photo)

Kingdom of Morocco – M1A1 SA Abrams Tank Enhancement, Support and Equipment

(Source: Defense Security Cooperation Agency; issued June 18, 2012)

WASHINGTON --- The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress today of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco for enhancement and refurbishment of 200 M1A1 Abrams tanks and associated parts, equipment, logistical support and training for an estimated cost of $1.015 billion.

The Government of the Kingdom of Morocco has requested a possible enhancement and refurbishment of 200 M1A1 Abrams tanks, provided as part of a grant Excess Defense Article (EDA) transfer notified to Congress on 27 April 2011, to the M1A1 Special Armor (SA) configuration.

The possible sale will also provide 150 AN/VRC-87E and 50 AN/VRC-89E Exportable Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), 200 M2 Chrysler Mount Machine Guns, and 400 7.62MM M240 Machine Guns. The possible sale also includes 12,049,842 Ammunition Rounds (including 1400 C785 SABOT, 1800 CA31 HEAT, and 5400 AA38 SLAP-T), 200 M250 Smoke Grenade Launchers, support equipment, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical data, communication support, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance, and other related logistics support. The estimated cost is $1.015 billion.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major Non-NATO ally that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in Africa.

This package of M1A1 tank enhancements will contribute to the modernization of Morocco’s tank fleet, enhancing its ability to meet current and future threats. These tanks will contribute to Morocco’s goal of updating its military capability while further enhancing interoperability with the U.S. and other allies. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The prime contractor will be General Dynamics Land Systems in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Refurbishment work will be performed at Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama and the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require annual trips to Morocco involving up to 64 U.S. Government and 13 contractor representatives for a period of up to five years to manage the fielding and training for the program.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded. (ends)

The annoucements of a Moroccan purchase of Abrams tanks are not new (although this time it seems more credible). For instance this was published in 2012:

The Royal Moroccan Army’s  receives first upgrade M1A1   Abrams main battle tanks from USA. The first batch of  Abrams tanks was spotted in Morocco.

Morocco receives tanks from the US as part of the general contract for 222 tanks , worth $ 1.015 billion, which was approved by the US Congress in 2011 and signed in 2013. Earlier, in 2013, it was already informed about the contract for 50 tanks , delivery of which should be completed by November 30 2016.

Under the $358m foreign military sales (FMS) contract, the General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) company will upgrade a total of 150 M1A1 Abrams tanks for sale to the Kingdom of Morocco.

The advanced M1A1 SA tank features gunners primary sight, new Block I 2nd generation forward-looking infrared technology, and a blue force tracking system for enhanced effectiveness in the battlefield.

According to the company, the refurbished tanks also incur lower operational and support costs and report higher operational readiness rates.

A photograph released via Morocco's state-owned Medi 1 TV shows one of the first M1A1 Abrams tanks to be delivered to the kingdom. (Medi 1 TV)

The Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) released photographs of the ceremony marking the arrival of its first Abrams to the state-owned Medi 1 TV news channel, which published them on 26 July and reported that the event had taken place at the Central Establishment for Management and Material Storage (ECGCM) in Nouaceur, near Casablanca. Medi 1 TV did not report how many tanks have been delivered, but one photograph showed the FAR now has at least six.

Morocco receives second-hand M109 A5 howitzers from the United States

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46027:morocco-receives-m109-howitzers&catid=50:Land&itemid=105

The Morocco military has apparently taken delivery of second hand M109 A5 155 mm self-propelled howitzers from the United States.

Photos posted earlier this week on Moroccan websites show at least a dozens M109s that were offloaded at Casablanca's port.

According to the US Excess Defense Articles database,  Morocco requested 70 surplus M109A5 howitzers and these were authorised to be transferred in January this year.

Morocco already uses earlier versions of the M109 and received 60 second hand M109A5s from the United States in 2012, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, as well as 43 M109A1s from Belgium in 2008 and 40 M109A1s from Switzerland in 2005 (in a sale financed by the UAE). According to the UN Register of Conventional Arms (UNROCA), three M109A3s and a single M1094A were delivered from the United States in 2013.

More defence equipment may be on the way for Morocco, as the Excess Defense Articles database shows the US Army has been authorised to suppliy  600 excess M113A3 armoured personnel carriers, 150 M557A2 command post carriers, 48 000 M16A1/A2/A4 assault rifles, 14 000 M203 grenade launchers, 4 500 M240 machineguns and 7 000 M249 machineguns . The authorisation for this equipment was given between March and September this year but this does not mean the transfer has or will necessarily go through.

More upgraded Abrams tanks on the way to Morocco

The Moroccan military will soon be taking delivery of another batch of M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States.

A train convoy of Abrams tanks in Moroccan military markings was recently seen moving through Covington, Georgia, on its way from Anniston, Alabama, to the port of Charleston. The vehicles were due to be put aboard a ship and sailed to Casablanca.

The first upgraded Abrams were seen in Casablanca in July 2016 and were accepted into the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces that same month. That followed contracts for the modernisation of some 200 Abrams tanks in a deal worth just over $1 billion. Work is conducted by General Dynamics Land Systems.

According to the US Excess Defense Articles database, in 2017 Morocco had requested 222 Abrams tanks and 162 had been allocated.

The upgrade covers the M1A1 Special Armour (SA) configuration and is being provided as part of a Excess Defense Article (EDA) grant. The upgrade covers the provision and installation of AN/VRC-87E and 50 AN/VRC-89E Exportable Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS), M2 Chrysler Mount Machine Guns, and 7.62 mm M240 Machine Guns. The sale also included 12 049 842 rounds of ammunition (including 1400 C785 SABOT, 1800 CA31 HEAT, and 5400 AA38 SLAP-T tank gun rounds), support equipment, spares and training.

Morocco’s tank inventory is estimated to includes some 48 T-72s, 320 M60s (including 120 M60A3TTS), 184 M-48A5s (in storage) and 116 Austrian SK-105 Kürassier light tanks (also in storage).

The EDA database also lists Morocco as having accepted 2 665 M500 shotguns in 2017 and 76 Oshkosh M1070P1 trucks.

In 2016 it reports Morocco received vast quantities of excess hardware, including 57 000 M16 assault rifles, 3 700 M240 machineguns, 50 Mk 19 40 mm grenade launchers, 1 828 .50 calibre M2 machineguns, 908 7.62 mm rifles, 17 000 M203 grenade launchers, 4 500 M60 machineguns and 7 000 M249 machineguns.

Vehicle deliveries for 2016 included 400 M113 armoured personnel carriers, 100 M915 trucks, 110 M916 trucks as well as dozens of cargo trailers, fuel carriers, recovery and other vehicles.

Quem controla o Estreito controla grande parte to tráfego marítimo para o Mediterrâneo.

Morocco intends to make itself the leading military power in Africa.

Currently it’s in second place, behind largest Africa’s largest importer of weapons, Algeria.

Defense spending in Morocco decreased between 2013 and 2017, from 3.8 billion to 3.4 billion. This was attributed to the decrease in the dirham exchange rate in relation to the dollar.

The country, however, is still importing weapons and defense equipment such as fighter planes, ships, missiles, tanks and frigates to reinforce its armed forces.

Morocco is expected to continue increasing its defense budget from 3.5 billion in 2018 to 3.9 billion by 2022, a growth rate of 2.80 percent, stated the report.

The Kingdom’s future supply plan for the arms industry includes purchases of combat aircraft, helicopters, submarines, radar systems and warships.

Morocco is also expected to invest in diesel-electric fighters and submarines, military information and network technologies and anti-tank missiles.

From 2011-2015, Morocco accounted for 26% of the arms exported to Africa, following Algeria’s 30%, according to a report from the International Peace Research Institute of Stockholm (Sipri), published In February 2016.

The United States is the main arms exporter to the kingdom through the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. France and the Netherlands also export defense equipment to Morocco through the Association Agreement with the European Union.

POSTED ON FRIDAY, 22 MAY 2020 09:54

On May 22, Army Recognition mentioned armaments contracts signed by Morocco with France and, at last, officially announced. According to Michel Cabirol in the French newspaper La Tribune, it is possible to publish precisions about one of the two types of equipment (we shall come back later on the second one): Caesar self-propelled howitzers.

The Artillery is organized in units operating self-propelled howitzers, towed howitzers, MLRS and air defense systems, mortar carriers. The equipment includes: 350 155mm M109 SPH in different versions, 60 203mm M110A2 SPH, received as EDA from USA, and 100 155mm Mk F3 remain in service. The Nexter 155mm Caesar SPHs are a precious addition to this arsenal.

The Royal Moroccan Army army is about 200,000 troops strong, In case of war or state of siege, an additional force of 200,000 Reservists and paramilitary forces, including 24,000 regulars of the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie and 30,000 Auxiliary Forces come under the Ministry of Defense command.

Morocco to buy missile air defense systems from MBDA France

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 20 MAY 2020 13:48

France is Morocco’s second-largest arms supplier, providing 44% of the total weaponry, while the US accounts for 53%, Hamza Guessous reminds on Morocco News. Next order(s) will benefit to MBDA France.

Morocco’s head of government, Saad Eddine El Othmani, approved decree No. 346.20.0, issued on May 11, for the procurement of a set of weapons from French company MBDA.
The approval came after the government secured a €192.1 million loan agreement with BNP PARIBAS on April 28. Morocco’s Directorate of National Defense and MBDA France concluded the armament contract, says a statement in Morocco’s May 18 Official Bulletin.
The future acquisition will be part of Morocco’s five-year plan established in 2017 to reach “regional supremacy” by modernizing the military equipment of its army, air force, and navy.

From 2008 to 2018, France sold €1.8 billion worth of military equipment to Morocco, including a FREMM frigate in 2008 (Naval Group) and two spy satellites in 2013 (Airbus and Thales). In February 2019, Morocco concluded a set of military agreements with French arms manufacturers for a total value of €400 million.
Although France and Morocco share long-standing relations, the US is the country’s primary arms supplier.

France provides 44% of Morocco’s weapons while the US accounts for 53% of Morocco’s arms provision. Italy provides 1.4%.

So far, Morocco has devoted $20 billion to its strategic objective. Morocco’s arms acquisition deals with the US alone totaled $10.3 billion in 2019.
The North African country is currently the second biggest arms exporter and the seventh-greatest military power in Africa, according to Global Firepower’s 2019 military strength ranking.
