M-346 ADVANCED FIGHTER TRAINER, ITALY
The M-346 is an advanced and lead-in fighter trainer being developed by Aermacchi SpA (Italy). It was previously known as the YAK/AEM-130 and was being developed in conjunction with Yakolev Design Bureau (Russia) and Sokol Manufacturing Plant (Russia). Povazske Strojarne LM from the Slovak Republic was responsible for the design and manufacture of the power plant, and Leninetz from Russia and Finmeccanica from Italy for the avionics. In July 2000, Aermacchi announced that it would cancel the joint project and develop the aircraft alone, as the M-346. The first M-346 prototype completed its initial taxi test in April 2004. First flight is scheduled for later in 2004 with production to begin in 2007.
The YAK/AEM-130 has flown in prototype form since 1996. The aircraft completed two series of flight tests and was delivered to the Russian Air Force for evaluation. As the Yak-130, the aircraft was selected in March 2002 as the Russian AF's next generation combat trainer, in preference to the MiG-AT design. First flight of the production aircraft is scheduled in 2004. The Russian requirement is for 200 trainers.
The M-346 provides combat pilot training for front-line fighters, with a high angle-of-attack capability. The aerodynamic design of the M-346 uses vortex lift to provide manoeuvrability and controllability at a very high angle-of-attack, using a fly-by-wire control system.
WEAPONS
Armaments are carried on nine external store stations, six of which are underwing, equipped with 1,000lb class ejector release units, and two wingtip stations for air-to-air missiles. The under-fuselage station carries avionics pods or a 300-litre conformal fuel tank. The system data presentation and control functions of the stores management system use any one of the multifunction displays in both cockpits. Hands on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controls are used to select the weapons. Weapon aiming is controlled by the central main processor, aiming data being presented to the pilots through the Head Up Display (HUD) or the Helmet Mounted Display (HMD).
The weapons carried include: MK82 500 lb and MK83 1000 lb free fall or retarded bombs; Rocket launchers; AIM-9 Sidewinder short range air-to-air missiles; Raytheon AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles; MBDA (formerly Alenia) Marte MK-2A anti-ship missiles. The external hard points can also carry the Vinten VICON-601 reconnaissance pod, laser designator pod, radar warning receiver pod and Elettronica ELT-55 electronic countermeasures pod.
For fighter trainer role, self-protection system functions and simulated tactical scenario threats are presented and monitored on the multifunction displays. For operational roles, the aircraft is fitted with a radar warning receiver, chaff and flares dispensers, and active electronic countermeasures.
COCKPIT
The cockpit is representative of the latest-generation combat aircraft, and each crew position is equipped with raster/stroke type Head Up Display (HUD), full-colour liquid crystal multifunction displays (three in each cockpit), Helmet-Mounted Display with threat simulation capability, Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible instrumentation and Hands On Throttle And Stick (HOTAS) controls.
The cockpits can be fitted with MK16 ejection seats from Martin Baker of Uxbridge, UK or the K-93 zero zero ejection seats from Zvezda of Russia.
AVIONICS
The avionics architecture is based on a dual-redundant MIL-STD-1553B digital data bus which has capacity for additional systems. The communication suite includes a VHF/UHF transceiver and an IFF transponder. The navigation suite includes a laser gyro inertial navigation system with an embedded GPS receiver, and a tactical air navigation (TACAN) and VHF omnidirectional radio ranging (VOR/IIS/MB).
The Flight Control System (FCS) is a full authority digital fly-by-wire quadruple-redundant system, which includes four BAE Systems Italia flight control computers. The FCS provides the aircraft with controllability up to angles of attack (AoA) of 35 degrees and higher, g-limitation, stall and spin prevention, and maximum angle of attack (AoA) limitation. It can be adapted to various degrees of automation and autopilot modes with reversionary modes featuring automatic selection for use in case of damage or failures.
ENGINES
Povazke Strojarne L.M. was to be the supplier of the two DV-2S twin-shaft turbofan engines which provide a maximum thrust of 2,200kg each. For the M-346, these are to be replaced with two Honeywell/ITEC F124-GA-100 turbofan engines, produced with Fiat Avio. There is also a closed-circuit self-contained aerobatics lubrication system and dual channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC).

Peço desculpa, não é modelo é avião...
-
É impressão minha, ou o mercado de aviões de treino está um pouco saturado?
A Rússia oferece o Mig-AT e o Yak-130, a Itália este M-346, a Argentina o Pampa, a Roménia o IAR Soim, a Rep. Checa o L-159 ALCA, a Alemanha o Mako, a Coreia do Sul o T/F-50, a China o K-8 (?), e por último o Reino Unido o Hawk.
Seria bom a nossa FA começar a prestar atenção...

Focus on M-346
The M-346 was conceived to fill the training gap brought about by the introduction of the latest generation of combat aircraft such as the Eurofighter, Rafale, Gripen, F-22 and, soon, the JSF. The M-346 is thus the only new generation aircraft in its class and is fully representative of these new fighters. Its chief characteristic is to allow the student pilot to acquire crucial operational skills – such as aircraft handling at high energy levels and system and mission management – on an aircraft with the much lower costs of a trainer.
The M-346 is designed around innovative solutions. The aircraft has Fly-by-Wire digital controls that are easily reprogrammed to link increasing difficulties with student progress. The quadruple-redundancy of the flight control system allows the M-346 to fly safely throughout the entire envelope. The two Honeywell/Avio F124 turbofans rated at 27.8 kN thrust each give the M-346 a thrust/weight ratio close to 1, endowing it with much greater performance than current advanced trainers and manoeuvrability close to that of combat aircraft.
The combination of these characteristics means that the M-346 offers safety levels unattainable by competing aircraft. The M-346 also brings together digital avionics and the ability to simulate sensors and threats, two characteristics which again make it ideally suited to offer pilots tactical pre-operational training.
With the first pre-series aircraft about to be rolled out, the M-346 is in the advanced industrialization phase and continues to gain momentum. Italian Air Force interest has resulted in budgetary allocations for 15 aircraft, fuelling international prospectives and driving the participation in the advanced trainer competitions under way in the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. Countries like Greece, Portugal and Poland have expressed their interest in participating in the industrial programme. The Advanced European Jet Pilot Training (AEJPT, or Eurotraining) initiative between twelve European air forces continues to offer a significant opportunity.

M-346 Master Advanced Trainer Adopts The Helmet Mounted Display
Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company, recently carried out the first flight tests of the new sophisticated Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) system that will be fitted to the M-346 Master advanced training aircraft.
The HMD system, a true interface between the pilot and aircraft systems, complements the Head-Up Display by offering the pilot to receive attitude, navigation, tactical and mission information directly on the helmet visor, independently of the direction in which he is looking. The HMD is fully integrated with aircraft avionics and with the Embedded Tactical Training Simulation system.
The adoption of this new HMD system on the M-346 is a crucial element of training effectiveness and an important step towards making the Master ever more representative of operational aircraft. The M-346 Master will now allow student pilots to learn to use the HMD, avoiding the risks involved should it be encountered directly on the much more expensive operational aircraft (Eurofighter, F-35, Rafale, F-16). The HMD will also be integrated in the Full Mission Simulator.
Test pilots Quirino Bucci and Matteo Maurizio tested the new HMD system to their fullest satisfaction, appreciating its ergonomics and performance from both the forward and rear seats.
'We obtained significant results, with stable symbology under high g and ease of head movement thanks to the lightweight helmet', said after the flights Alenia Aermacchi Chief Test Pilot Quirino Bucci.
The limited helmet weight under 1.6 kilos, achieved by the miniaturisation and careful placement of components - translates into lower pilot fatigue under high g manoeuvres, while the low voltage translates into a high levels of safety. A micro camera captures the pilot's field of view, including visor symbology, making it available for post-flight debriefings.
The system selected for installation in the M-346 employs the latest optical and digital technologies. It allows the aircraft to operate by day and night, using Night Vision Goggles (NVG). The ability to present synthetic symbology and high-resolution images, plus the accuracy of the pilot's line of sight measurement, are peculiar characteristics of the M-346 Master HMD system.

M-346 FA - #LDOFIA2024 (Leonardo, 24 de Julho de 2024)
Leonardo launches M-346 capability enhancement programme leveraging system’s inherent growth to meet modern training and operational requirements
(22 de Julho de 2024)
At Farnborough International Air Show, Leonardo has announced the launch of a comprehensive capability enhancement package for the M-346 integrated training system including the aircraft’s core avionics, navigation/identification, mission equipment and ground training capabilities. The move reflects the training needs to align pilot’s skills to the evolution dictated by modern multi-domain battlefields, combat air technology, and information management.
This latest development leverages the inherent growth capability embedded into the M-346 design as well as ten years of proven in-service experience with leading air forces across geographies and is an integral part of the broader organisational digitization roadmap initiative, fully consistent with Leonardo’s longer-term strategy. As such, both training and fighter variants will benefit from these enhancements to deliver even greater capabilities to the market for a wide spectrum of applications, while implying significant margin for further developments in the future. The ‘M-346 T Block 20’ and ‘M-346 F Block 20’ are the designations for the new standard.
The new Block 20 standard will not be limited to the platform itself, but rather to the entire system including the ground based training system and shall be enabled by the widespread implementation of digitalization powered by AI.
The Block 20 standard cockpit will feature two large area displays, one per each seat, replacing the existing six multi-functional displays, plus a low profile head-up display. These will be combined with a new digital video and data recorder and a new augmented reality helmet mounted display. The new cockpit will align the human-machine interface to those of the most sophisticated and future frontline combat air systems, with advantages in terms of quality training (i.e. look & feel plus a high fidelity immersive environment) and situational awareness in operational missions. The ‘M-346 Block 20’ will also benefit from new navigation, weapon management, flight management system, IFF - Identification of Friend or Foe - transponder.
Specifically for the M-346 F variant, further critical capability enhancements include an AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar featuring fire control radar capability, integration of new weapons for both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles in addition to a built-in missile datalink.

Block 20, the new digital face of the M-346
(22 de Julho de 2024)
A jewel born from 70 years of company experience in the trainer sector, with different versions sold in total in over 2,000 units worldwide. It is the M-346, currently in production at Leonardo's. Its CV includes over 120,000 flight hours, more than 100 machines sold globally and the most challenging assignment: being the backbone of the International Flight Training School, the school of excellence for training national and international military pilots, born from the collaboration between Leonardo and the Italian Air Force. Today we are working on the new Block 20 configuration, which will incorporate new digital and artificial intelligence features, to allow the M-346 to remain a "top performer" in current - and future - operational scenarios.
The M-346 is a twin-engine, two-seat transonic jet aircraft, with fully digital flight controls and avionics, equipped with a fly-by-wire flight control system with quadruple redundancy and a modern human-machine interface with display for the "head up" (HUD – Head-up Display) and multifunction (MFD – Multi Functional Display) data presentation.
The aircraft is the fulcrum of a training system consisting of an integrated on-board system for the simulation of tactical training (ETTS - Embedded Tactical Training System), which allows the aircraft to emulate sensors, armaments and CGF (Computer Generated Forces) and allows pilots to operate simultaneously, and in a combined manner, in LVC mode: Live (real flight), Virtual (the various types of simulators) and Constructive (interfacing with any type of force/threat generated by the computer).
The system is completed by the GBTS (Ground Based Training System) ground training segment, composed of various flight and mission simulation systems, multimedia and classroom courses, mission planning and training management systems, and an integrated logistic support (ILS) which optimises the management of fleets and simulators to allow maximum operation.
Changing operational scenarios, training times, the costs of flying fifth generation aircraft, the availability of new, more advanced cockpits, with an eye to the next generation of "combat air": these are all variants that require an update of the entire trainer system, based on a holistic approach that maintains the correct balance between flying skills and information management, within a dynamic system such as training.
Today, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are the enablers of a further evolution that affects both the aircraft and the ground segment, and which will materialise in the new Block 20 configuration of the M-346, in the two Fighter and Trainer versions.
The integrated capabilities of the training system will be enhanced through upgraded state-of-the-art sensors, weapon systems, datalinks, and onboard avionics, as well as enhanced human-machine interfaces through augmented reality systems. All supported by advanced supercomputing capabilities, artificial intelligence algorithms and intrinsic cyber resilience characteristics, with substantial benefits in terms of operational availability of the fleet and integrated services.
The entire training ecosystem will benefit from the update, enhancing its distinctive live/virtual/constructive capacity and confirming itself as the best "incubator" for training the latest generation fighter pilots, capable of dealing with updated training syllabuses and threats emerging in the airspace, with or without a pilot.
