BRITAIN appears to be evolving into the first modern soft totalitarian state.
As a sometime teacher of political science and international law, I do not use the term totalitarian loosely.
There are no concentration camps or gulags but there are thought police with unprecedented powers to dictate ways of thinking and sniff out heresy, and there can be harsh punishments for dissent.

Plan to monitor all internet use
Communications companies are being asked to record all internet contacts between people to modernise police surveillance tactics in the UK.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith stepped back from a single database - but wants companies to hold and organise the information for the security services.
The new system would track all e-mails, phone calls and internet use, including visits to social network sites.

the UK is a complex and diverse society with large pockets of minorities... therefore it calls for tough policing and methods of dissuasion! not only to protect the public at large but also to safeguard those minorities from prejudice, discrimination or plain violence! I tend to disagree with you on the term "totalitarian" I would use the term "authoritarian"... I know it doesn't sound good but it's needed in those countries that are diverse and multi cultural and religious for the simple reason that the "melting pot" doesn't always produce good results!
As per the government monitoring of communications... they been doing that for years, have you heard of "echelon"?

Political Correctness is Cultural Marxism which has changed the UK beyond all recognition. This is now a country were you are told what to think ,what to say and what to believe in.
The NU-Labour government is taking us into a federal european superstate against the wishes of the British people and they call it democracy.

You're absolutely right, cultural Marxism is basically the same as politically correct... which in turn can be translated into many aspects, from limiting freedom of speech to limiting majority rule!
In Portugal sadly, cultural Marxism is the norm. The left has the media and the cultural establishment "by the balls"

As a young man in the united states navy and in a ship with 5000 men and women, and 100 different nationalities, I felt and observed first hand that the "politically correct" only serves to excuse the incompetent and to pacify and main stream the minorities. Personally... I'm against it, but depending on the circumstances it could be viewed as a lesser evil!
