Landsort Modernised For International Peacekeeping Force

(Source: Kockums AB; dated May 31, web-posted June 1, 2005)

The comprehensive Landsort project has now been launched at Kockums in Karlskrona. Five of the Swedish Navy’s mine countermeasures vessels (MCMVs) are to undergo mid-life upgrades, as well as modification for international missions.

The total order is worth more than one billion Swedish kronor. Kockums is principal contractor and will be responsible, among other things, for procurement of command and sonar systems.

“We have already had an initial technical meeting, prior to the launch of the project, with our customer FMV (Swedish Defence Matériel Administration) and our subcontractors,” says Jörgen Arbholt, who has been appointed project manager.

Intensive efforts are currently being made on the construction side, while the work of removing obsolete equipment has already started on the first, HMS Koster. HMS Vinga and HMS Ulvön will soon follow their sister vessel into the shipyard.

Initially, these three vessels will be modified to enable participation in the Swedish international rapid reaction force, after which they will undergo a general refit. Later, all five vessels will be equipped with new weapon and command systems, new air-defence systems and a remote-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) which will possess a mine-hunting capability, among other features.

The Landsort class, constructed of Glassfibre Reinforced Plastic (GRP), was built at Kockums’ Karlskrona shipyard in the early 1980s, and will continue play an important role in the Swedish Navy’s future organisation.

RSwN Submarine HMS Gotland on Lease to US Navy for Twelve Months

(Source: Kockums AB; issued May 31, 2005)

The Swedish Navy submarine HMS Gotland, designed and built by Kockums, is being leased to the US Navy for a year, complete with a Swedish crew, so that the Americans can conduct joint manoeuvres with her.

She was recently loaded onto a container ship for freight to the USA. She will initially be based on the US west coast in San Diego.

Prior to her transatlantic transit, Kockums’ personnel and others have carried out a thorough overhaul. Among other things, the vessel’s civil communications equipment for marine safety has been upgraded with an emergency power supply. A new satellite communications antenna has been installed and the submarine has been equipped with an improved air conditioning system and a larger freshwater generator.

“Everyone involved has done an excellent job in a short time,” notes project manager Lars Bergenzaum at Kockums.

The Gotland-class submarine possesses excellent stealth characteristics and has performed well in international joint manoeuvres.

Saab Signs Contract for the Modification and Upgrading of Swedish Corvettes

Defence and security company Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the modification and upgrading of the Swedish Marine’s Gävle-class corvettes. The order value amounts to BSEK 1.249 and the work will be carried out during the period of 2017-2020.

The contract states that Saab is to conduct a life extension of two corvettes, HMS Gävle and HMS Sundsvall, both of the Gävle-class. The contract also includes that Saab will conduct a general inspection after the ships have been in service for 72 months. Besides this, the contract also includes that the ships will be modernised with a new, advanced combat system.

“We have a long experience in building and maintaining corvettes in steel, aluminium and in composite. The ships have good operational capabilities, high availability, long service life, and low operating costs. With a new, advanced combat system, the ships will be modernised to meet the customer’s demands”, says Gunnar Wieslander, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Kockums.

The work will be conducted at Saab in Karlskrona and in Järfälla within the two Business Areas, Kockums and Surveillance.

Corvettes are developed and optimised to operate in the waters surrounding Sweden. The corvettes’ operational missions mostly include surface combat, Anti-Submarine Warfare and air defence.

The shipyard in Karlskrona delivered four corvettes of the Göteborg-class between 1990 and 1993. By the end of the 1990s, two of them were upgraded, HMS Gävle and HMS Sundsvall, and this gave rise to the Gävle-class.

Saab serves the global market with world-leading products, services and solutions within military defence and civil security. Saab has operations and employees on all continents around the world. Through innovative, collaborative and pragmatic thinking, Saab develops, adopts and improves new technology to meet customers’ changing needs.

As disclosed, the upgrade includes several new systems that are expected to strengthen the navy’s capability in combat under water, among other areas.

The modernisation has been carried out at Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona and is the largest change the ship has gone through during its lifetime. In parallel, its sister-ship HMS Sundsvall is going through the same modifications and will be delivered this year.

Some of the changes to the ships are a completely new sensor park with better reconnaissance radar and fire control, new systems for combat command and navigation

“It is a do over and modernisation of everything on board: She will have the same hull, but more or less all the systems on the inside are new”, said Johan Edelsvärd, Project Manager for the Mid-Life Upgrade of HMS Gävle at FMV.

“The Flotilla welcomes HMS Gävle and her crew back to service. The ship will now be able to contribute to the navy’s ongoing maritime surveillance tasaks. The ship and crew and will play an important part in the Navy’s active defence”, said Jon Wikingsson, Chief of the Swedish Navy’s 4th Flotilla.

HMS Gävle was taken out of service in 2012 for mid-life upgrade. Due to the navy’s financial situation, the process was delayed, but work resumed later.

Saab received a $147.6 million contract for the modification and modernisation of two Swedish Navy’s Gävle-class corvettes in 2017. Under the contract, the firm will also conduct a general inspection after the vessels have been in service with the Swedish Navy for period of 72 months.

Once known as the Göteborg-class ships, the vessels are now familiar as belonging to the Gävle-class, following an upgrade programme at the end of the 1990s.

Swedish Sea Drones in NATO Exercise

Citar
New Swedish drones tested

At the end of September, around 70 Swedish officers, engineers and technicians showed where Sweden stands in development. During the NATO exercise Repmus/Dynamic Messenger 25, which was held in areas outside Sètubal, south of Lisbon, the Swedes were formed into a Team Sweden.

Several new Swedish-built sea drones were part of the Swedish force, which also demonstrated the crucial digital system that will be used to control and lead the unmanned vehicles.

– We have focused on how things work together. What the different platforms can do and how, and not least how this activity should be controlled and managed, says Captain Magnus Lind, development officer.

Taking on dangerous missions

Team Sweden’s force included Saab’s AUV 62AT, an established platform. The craft resembles a large torpedo packed with state-of-the-art technology.

It is used as a submarine target and is an autonomous vehicle for practicing submarine hunting and has been used by the Armed Forces for several years. Another version of the vehicle (AUV 62 MR) can also be used to find and identify mines using the sensors on board the vehicle, says Commander Therese Tärnholm, the Navy’s Head of Research.

These are a good example of unmanned platforms that can take over personnel-intensive and risky missions in the navy.
