Millennium 35MM Ahead Naval Gun System Contract
(Source: Rheinmetall DeTec; issued Oct. 28, 2004)
The Naval Material Command, Denmark, has placed a contract with Oerlikon Contraves for Millennium 35 mm Ahead Naval Gun Systems for installation on the new Combat Support Ships (CSS) of the Royal Danish Navy. Oerlikon Contraves is a subsidiary of the Rheinmetall DeTec group, Duesseldorf.
Each CSS will be fitted with two Millennium guns, one forward of the bridge and one aft on the hangar roof. They will be controlled by the SaabTech CEROS fire control systems and the Terma Command Management System of the CSS.
The Millennium guns and their unique 35 mm Ahead Air Burst Munition (ABM) will fulfill the Inner Layer Defence role in the CSS Combat System being able to defeat both asymmetric and symmetric air and surface threats as a multi-role weapon system.
Denmark is the seventh NATO country to select for procurement the 35 mm Ahead Air Burst Munition, which together with the powerful 35/1000 Revolver Cannon provides exceptional and flexible fire power including the capability for scaleable lethality to meet different operational scenarios.
The Naval Material Command contract with Oerlikon Contraves also includes an option for additional Millennium guns for the Patrol Vessel Programme for the Royal Danish Navy, which is a derivative of the CSS design.
Oerlikon Contraves is in partnership with Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors, Akron/USA, for the execution of the Millennium program.

Thales Signs Maintenance Contract for SMART-S Mk2
(Source: Thales Naval; issued Oct. 29, 2004)
Recently, the Royal Danish Navy and Thales Nederland signed a maintenance contract for the SMART-S Mk2 radar systems that Naval Materiel Command purchased in December 2003 for installation on the new Flexible Support Ships.
The maintenance contract, Smart Sparing Contract, will remain in force for 10 years. It consists of an innovative approach combining consultancy, delivery and services.
According to Arno Peels, Thales Nederland CEO, “Thales’ excellent maintenance proposal was one of the reasons the Royal Danish Navy selected the SMART-S Mk2 radars. This maintenance contract fits in with the trend that armed forces look more and more to industrial partners for taking over a part of their activities.”
