The Portuguese Navy commissioned into service its first STANFLEX 300 coastal patrol ship on 5 May.NRP Tejo (P590) is the first of four vessels bought under a EUR4 million contract of October 2014 with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation. The Tejo-class will be mainly used to monitor Portugal's maritime zone, progressively replacing the vessel NRP Schultz Xavier (A521) and the remaining patrol ships of the Cacine class. The commissioning came after NRP Tejo (P590) went through a contracted overhaul with the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard. Although commissioned on 5 May, it's expected the vessel will later return to the shipyard for additional outfitting.Modernization of remaining three ships is scheduled to be complete until September 2017. However, Arsenal do Alfeite is yet to receive contracts to overhaul for the remaining ships, although several systems have already been purchased by the navy for the class. The modernisation include adding a protected 12.7 mm machine gun mount; Kelvin Hughes navigation radars; integrated communications system by EID that include company's ICCS6 communications control system and Most4 Ships message handling system and Rohde & Schwarz radios; KVH Industries TracPhone V7 IP satellite communications system; a Harding Safety rescue boat; echo sounder; search and rescue transponder; communications antennas; transceivers; davit; safety equipment; commercial navigation and communications equipment. Repairs and interior modifications were made, and propulsion management system was translated from Danish to English by its original equipment manufacturer Lyngsø Marine. An electro-optical payload could be later added.
