The upgraded Block 2 Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) recently intercepted a BQM-74E aerial target in a successful flight test, the US Navy announced on July 5.

This was the first ESSM flight test to utilize the new Block 2 active guidance seeker-head. ESSM Block 2 will employ both semi-active and active guidance to meet current and anticipated future threats.

The test follows the successful completion of two controlled test vehicle flight tests in June 2017 and is the first in a series of live fire tests that will lead to the ESSM Block 2 missile entering production.

“This flight test is critical to demonstrating the technology for the ESSM Block 2,” said Capt. Bruce Schuette, project manager for the NATO Seasparrow Project. “I am very proud of the entire NATO Seasparrow Project Team, from our industry partners to our field activities and test facilities, for all the extensive work that went into making this event a success.”

The NATO Seasparrow Project is an international consortium of 12 nations consisting of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and the United States.

The 12 member nations are partners in engineering, development, production and sustainment of the missiles and supporting equipment. Established in 1968, the NATO Seasparrow Project is the longest running, cooperative weapons program in NATO and is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year.

Finland to acquire Israel’s Gabriel anti-ship missile system

Finland is to acquire Israel Aerospace Industries’ Gabriel anti-ship missile system for its Navy, the Ministry of Defence said in a release.

The new missile system – dubbed Surface-to-Surface Missile System 2020 – will be installed on board the Hamina-class and Squadron 2020-class vessels and on “a vehicle platform,” the Friday, July 6 release said.

The €162 million ($190 million) purchase includes launchers, missiles, simulators, test equipment, spare parts and training, and includes a €193 million ($227 million) option.

Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2019 and to be complete by 2025. The procurement “will have an impact” on the Finnish Navy’s capabilities until the 2050s, the release said.

Israel Aerospace Industries’ Gabriel missiles are a family of sea-skimming anti-ship missiles first developed in the 1960s.

The Gabriel system was competing against Kongsberg’s Naval Strike Missile, MBDA’s Exocet, Boeing’s Harpoon and Saab’s RBS15.

Denmark wants to deploy a frigate with France’s carrier strike group in 2019

Denmark’s defense ministry announced on Friday it’s intention to deploy one of its frigates to France where it would join the French Navy aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle for exercises in early 2019.

Early 2019 is when the Marine Nationale’s sole aircraft carrier is expected to make a return to the fleet after an 18-month, mid-life refit.
Denmark’s defense ministry noted that Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen would express his country’s interest in deploying a frigate with French units to French president Emmanuel Macron next week.

Should France invite a Danish Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate for exercises, the deployment would last between three and four months and see the joint task group operate in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The ministry said the main goal of the deployment for Denmark would be to allow Royal Danish Navy sailors to train with French and other partner units including those from the US and the UK. At the same time, the Danish frigate will be tasked with providing air defense commander capabilities for the carrier strike group.

This would not be the first deployment of a Royal Danish Navy frigate with a carrier strike group as HDMS Peter Willemoes (F 362) joined US aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) for six months of operations in the Middle East in early 2017.

The second of four Gowind 2500 corvettes for the Egyptian Navy – and the first of the class to be built in-country – was launched on 6 September from the facilities of Alexandria Shipyard (ASY).

Named Port Said , the 102 m ship will now complete outfitting at ASY before beginning trials next year.

In July 2014 France’s Naval Group (then DCNS) was awarded a contract by the Egyptian Armament Authority for the design and construction of Gowind 2500 first-of-class El Fateh at its Lorient shipyard in northwest France. The contract also included materiel procurement for the three follow-on corvettes, and a transfer of technology agreement to enable ASY to build three follow-on ships in-country. ASY had been contracted separately for the provision of labour and infrastructure.

The Gowind 2500 design, a larger variant of which forms the basis for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship programme, has been developed by Naval Group to meet export demands for a small but highly capable multimission surface combatant. The version procured by Egypt features Naval Group’s own Strategic Energy Technologies Information System (SETIS) combat management system (CMS), together with a Thales-supplied sensor suite comprising a SMART-S Mk 2 3D surveillance radar, a Vigile 200 Mk 3 electronic support measures (ESM) system, a STIR EO Mk 2 radar/electro-optical tracker, a CAPTAS-2 low frequency active variable depth sonar, and a Kingklip hull-mounted sonar.

A so-called Panoramic Sensors and Intelligence Module (PSIM) combines the SETIS CMS with above-water prime sensors (SMART-S Mk 2 and Vigile 200 Mk 3 ESM). The PSIMs for the three ASY-built ships are all to be built, commissioned, and tested at Lorient prior to being transported to Alexandria.

ADAS 2018: Austal on track with Philippine expansion

Jon Grevatt, Manila - IHS Jane's Defence Industry

26 September 2018

Australian shipbuilder Austal is expanding its presence in the Philippines in support of a potential programme to supply the Philippine Navy (PN) with six offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).

Speaking at the Asian Defence and Security (ADAS) 2018 exhibition in Manila, a company official told Jane's that Austal is currently increasing the size of its existing ship-building facility in Balamban, in the central island province of Cebu, and aims to double its local workforce at the site.

Work on expanding the ship-building facility is expected to be complete by early 2019 and within another year Austal expects to employ up to 1,000 people at the yard.

http://www.thefifthcolumn.xyz/Forum/viewthread.php?tid=53&page=3

Tuesday, 25 September 2018 23:33

Babcock International, the highly-skilled engineering service company, is showcasing its design of modern multi-role Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) with an emphasis on hull forms at the OPV 2018 conference and exhibition, in London.

Babcock Defense 90 OPV design. Babcock picture.

Well placed to support global navies, Babcock will discuss the importance of innovation as the company promotes its latest programmes, design and build capability, through-life support and marine training for the general purpose frigate market.

With a portfolio of class-leading 50m inshore patrol vessels and 90m OPVs, of which Babcock is in the finishing stages of completing a fourth ship for the Irish Naval Service’s OPV Fleet, the international conference will provide a platform for the company to display innovative hull forms – developed for its Defender range of multi-role OPVs and its most recently launched Arrowhead 120 and 140 ships – all underlining the company’s design credentials.

Understanding the global demand for smaller, more versatile crafts, Babcock is demonstrating its universal capability to design new ships which meet customer requirements for ever more capability and operational flexibility from a single platform. Its Defender and Arrowhead portfolio enable design variants, bespoke reconfigurations and armaments solutions to deliver exactly what its customers want – wherever in the world they operate.

Babcock’s multi-role vessel hull form is a distinctive yet traditional design that has been optimised with MARIN for seakeeping, fuel efficiency and launch and recovery of off-board assets. And the company’s blend of commercial and military technology provides a robust and cost effective design. All backed by a comprehensive through-life support and network of global naval training, Babcock provides the full package of design, build and support services.

Simon Knight, Babcock’s Naval Engineering Director said: “Babcock’s flexible approach means that we can provide an extensive range of global support to a wide range of maritime protection and enhancement organisations.

“This includes in-country maintenance, technology transfer, training or full design and build from our own or local facilities.

With many decades of experience of delivering in the OPV market, we look forward to profiling our platform range and capability."

Ukraine launches first Centaur-class assault boat

Ukrainian shipbuilder and arms manufacturer Kuznya na Rybalskomu has launched the country’s first Centaur-class assault boat.

The ceremony took place on September 14 in Kiev and was attended by high-ranking officials, including the head of the Ukrainian Navy forces, Ihor Voronchenko.

The Centaur-class craft are also known as Project 58181 vessels and are the first locally-designed and locally-built navy vessels.

According to the Ukrainian Military Portal, the assault boat displaces 47 tons and measures 24 meters in length. It is crewed by five sailors and can transport up to 32 troops. Propelled by waterjets, the boats have a reported top speed of 50 knots and can stay at sea for a maximum of five days.

The class is armed with two remote weapon stations with 12.7 mm high-caliber machine guns and a 40-mm rocket launcher. The boats also feature two 80-mm rocket-launch systems.

Centaur-class assault boats will complement the Ukrainian Navy fleet of Gurza and Gurza-M artillery boats.

Raytheon delivers RAM launcher for Mexican Navy POLA OPV

US Navy photo of a RAM system in action

US weapon manufacturer Raytheon announced it has delivered a Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launcher for the Mexican Navy’s long-range off-shore patrol vessel (Patrulla Oceánica de Largo Alcance, or POLA).

The RAM Block 2 supersonic, quick reaction, fire-and-forget missile to counter enemy anti-ship missiles. This latest version features a larger rocket motor, advanced control section and an enhanced radio frequency receiver.

The US state department approved the sale of RAM missiles and MK 54 Mod 0 lightweight torpedoes to Mexico in January 2018. A total of 23 Block II (RAM) tactical missiles were approved for sale.

Raytheon says this was the first delivery of a RAM product to a Latin American country.
“RAM Block 2 protects ships against a long list of constantly evolving threats,” said Mitch Stevison, Raytheon Air and Missile Defense Systems vice president. “With RAM protecting its frigate, Mexico not only enhances its maritime posture, but they also expand their naval support of national security and defense of critical sea lanes.”

The Mexican Navy POLA OPV is based on Damen’s SIGMA 10514 vessel design and measures 107 meters in length. It is set to be launched in November this year. Further outfitting and trials will proceed in 2019 while delivery and commissioning are expected in 2020.

Euronaval 2018: Rheinmetall premieres new-generation remote-controlled gun
Alex Pape, Paris - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 25 October 2018

A mock-up of the SeaSnake light naval gun system at Euronaval 2018. Source: IHS Markit/Alex Pape
The new light naval gun system SeaSnake has made its first appearance at the Euronaval exhibition in Paris.

Succeeding Rheinmetall's MLG 27 system, the new system is designed as a primary armament for small craft or a secondary armament for larger ships.

While the 27 mm Mauser BK27 cannon was again chosen because of its high accuracy and rate of fire, the rest of the mount is new.
"We have updated the system to be state-of-the-art," a company representative told Jane's . This includes new internals, new electronics, the option to mount an independently controlled stabilised electro-optical/infrared sensor package, and reduced radar cross-section (RCS).

The weight has also been reduced by using carbon fibre construction, according to Rheinmetall. Compared with an MLG 27 system fully loaded with 90 rounds, the SeaSnake 27 variant, with 225 rounds of ammunition, will weigh less than 600 kg; the SeaSnake 30 with 135 rounds will weigh about 620 kg.
The SeaSnake 30 mount is fitted with a 30 mm KCE30/ABM cannon, offering greater range as well as the ability to use programmable airburst ammunition.
