First Flights for the C-27J Spartan for the Italian Air Force

(Source: Alenia Aeronautica; issued Aug. 2, 2006)

The first of the 12 C-27J tactical transport aircraft for the Italian Air Force has undergone in the last few days its first flight tests from Turin-Caselle Airport.

These flights, carried out by Commanders Agostino Frediani and Mario Mutti, have led to the positive conclusion of the technical and functional checks by Alenia Aeronautica's test pilots. The "AMI1" – that has already obtained the type certification – will be delivered to AMI, the Italian Air Force, by the end of September.

The C-27J Spartan, the only specifically designed new-generation tactical airlifter of its category, is a twin engined turboprop tactical transport aircraft with state-of-the-art technology avionics, propulsion and aircraft systems; it provides high performances, high cost effectiveness, extreme operating flexibility and interoperability with heavier airlifters.

The contract signed in June 2002 with the Italian Defence Ministry envisages the supply of 12 C-27Js for the Italian Air Force, in a particularly sophisticated version; in fact, contrary to the basic version, the aircraft have a built-in air-refuelling probe, self-protection system and Head-up Display for both pilots.

In addition to the Italian Air Force, the aircraft has already been ordered so far by the Greek Air Force (12 aircraft), by the Bulgarian Armed Forces (8 aircraft) and by the Lithuanian Armed Forces (3 aircraft).

In the United States, the C-27J runs for the JCA, Joint Cargo Aircraft programme, for the renewal of the Army's and Air Forces' transport aircraft fleet, while in Canada it is proposed for the renewal of the Search and Rescue aircraft fleet.

The C-27J is also under evaluation by Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and by other countries recently become NATO members, such as Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia.

First Italian air force HH-101A breaks cover

The first AgustaWestland AW101 destined for the Italian air force has been displayed to service officials at the Anglo-Italian airframer's Yeovil, UK facility.

To be designated the HH-101A Caesar in Italian service, Rome has ordered 15 of the type to replace its current fleet of Agusta/Sikorsky HH-3 Pelicans for use on personnel recovery and special forces operations.

Initial test sorties using a green airframe took place at the beginning of February, with additional flights performed on 18 and 19 March following completion of painting.

Currently bearing the UK military registration ZR352, it, and a sister aircraft (ZR353), will be handed over to the Italian air force in the fourth quarter.

The HH-101A will be equipped with three M134 7.62mm pintle-mounted miniguns installed on the right and left sides and on the rear ramp, armoured cockpit seats, ballistic protection for the door gunners as well as for the helicopter's critical systems. It will also feature an air-to-air refuelling kit for extended range operations.

        Key Points

An ATR 72MP is being showcased outside Italy for the first time since the platform's induction into the Italian Air Force
The aircraft is being positioned as having a low cost of operation and being easy to maintain

Leonardo is showcasing an Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare: AM) ATR 72MP fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition in Malaysia to demonstrate the platform's maritime surveillance capabilities, the company has told Jane's.

This is the first time that the platform, which was inducted into service with the AM in December 2016, is being shown outside Italy, the company said. It is one of two airframes that was delivered to the service in 2016, with another two anticipated for delivery in 2017.

"Leonardo envisions significant export opportunities for the aircraft in the region due the aircraft's low cost of operation, ease of maintenance, and exceptional versatility in a number of maritime roles", Leonardo said in a statement on the airframe's deployment to Langkawi.

The platform being showcased is based on Leonardo's ATR 72-600 turboprop twin-engine aircraft. It is equipped with a package of sensors that includes the Selex ES Seaspray 7300E active electronically scanned array radar and the EOST-23 electro-optical turret.

The ATR 72MP's suite of self-protection measures includes chaff and flare dispensers, and missile warning systems.

According to Jane's World Air Force's, the ATR 72 also has the potential to be developed as fully capable anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platform and can equipped with sonobuoys, a magnetic anomaly detector, and an acoustic processor.
