The Afghan Air Force (AAF) is to convert the five unarmed MD Helicopters Inc (MDHI) MD 530F platforms it uses for training into light attack gunships, a company spokesperson told IHS Jane's on 13 August.

The five training helicopters that are currently flown out of Shindand Air Base in Herat Province (six were delivered, but one was lost to an improvised explosive device [IED] in 2013) will be retrofitted with the Enhanced Mission Equipment Package (EMEP) by MDHI at its facility in Mesa, Arizona, before being returned to theatre in early 2016, the spokesperson said.

These converted helicopters will join 12 armed MD 530F Cayuse Warrior helicopters (known as 'Jengi' [Warrior] by the AAF) that were contracted by the US Army in October 2014. All of these armed helicopters have now been delivered to the AAF, although one has been retained in the United States to accelerate development of the EMEP by MDHI.

The EMEP is a development of the Mission Equipment Package (MEP) which the helicopters were initially delivered with. While the MEP comprises twin FN Herstal 12.7 mm Heavy Machine Gun Pods (HMPs), the Rhode & Schwarz M3AR tactical radio communications system, the Robertson Fuel System, and Kinetic Defense ballistic armour panels for the two-person crew, the EMEP adds to this with the M260 air-to-surface rocket launcher.

An EMEP-equipped MD 530F will have an HMP carried on one side of the helicopter, and a seven-tube M260 launcher on the other. The 70 mm rockets will increase the helicopter's stand-off range from about 1,900 m with the machine guns to about 8,000 m.

With the EMEP development contract having been awarded by the US Army on 13 July, a total of 20 kits are due to be delivered by 12 July 2016 (including three spares). The armed helicopters so far delivered are operated out of Kabul International Airport, though it is unclear if the five currently at Shindand Air Base will be relocated to join them once they have been converted.

News that the AAF's unarmed training fleet is to be converted into gunships came two days after the United States' Train Advise Assist Command-East (TAACE-E) announced the type's combat debut.

On 11 August an undisclosed number of armed MD 530F helicopters flew in support of the Afghan National Security Force's (ANSF's) Operation 'Iron Triangle'. This operation is part of a wider effort to clear the districts of Khogyani, Sherzad, and Hisarak in the northeastern Nangarhar province of insurgents. It was not reported if the helicopters involved in this particular operation fired in anger.

The armed MD 530F was hurried into service earlier this year ahead of the Afghan 'fighting season', due to delays in the delivery of the Embraer EMB-314 (A-29) Super Tucano light attack turboprop. That fixed-wing platform is now set to arrive in theatre in the coming weeks, to begin replacing the Mil Mi-35 'Hind' helicopters.

The MD 530F (designated MD 530G I by the company) is the latest in a line of MD 500-series helicopters that trace their lineage back to the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse of the Vietnam War. In helicopter terms, it is a simple and rugged design and so relatively easy to maintain and support. It is primarily because of this ease of maintenance that the helicopter has been chosen to equip the AAF, given the well-documented problems that the ANSF has had in maintaining and supporting equipment.

O exército afegão iniciou nesta terça-feira, com apoio aéreo americano, uma contraofensiva para recuperar Kunduz, a estratégica cidade do norte do Afeganistão ocupada na segunda-feira pelos talibãs.

“Reforços do exército afegão iniciaram a operação para reconquistar a cidade de Kunduz às 8H00 (0H00 de Brasília)”, anunciou o ministério da Defesa. “Já recuperaram a sede central da polícia e a prisão da cidade”, afirma um comunicado.

Os reforços foram enviados a partir de outras províncias do país. “A batalha começou, as forças afegãs enfrentam a resistência dos talibãs, mas conseguem avançar”, declarou Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, porta-voz da polícia provincial de Kunduz.

Na segunda-feira, os rebeldes talibãs assumiram o controle da cidade de 300.000 habitantes em poucas horas. Kunduz é uma localidade de grande valor estratégico no caminho que vai de Cabul até o Tadjiquistão.

O exército afegão, que atua em várias frentes, não conta mais com o apoio terrestre da Otan. Os 13.000 soldados, principalmente americanos, da Aliança Atlântica ainda presentes no território afegão se dedicam exclusivamente ao treinamento dos militares do país.

No entanto, as forças americanas dão apoio às tropas afegãs com bombardeios efetuados por drones, principalmente no leste do país. Na manhã desta terça-feira, pela primeira vez foi executado um ataque aéreo em Kunduz para apoiar as forças afegãs na região, segundo a Otan.

O ataque, sobre o qual a Otan não divulgou detalhes, tinha como objetivo “eliminar uma ameaça” não identificada, segundo a Aliança. O exército dos Estados Unidos decidiu realizar o ataque ao avaliar a gravidade da situação, informaram fontes militares.

Bombardeamentos aéreos mataram líder talibã em Kunduz


Os serviços de inteligência afegãos asseguraram esta sexta-feira que o responsável talibã em Kunduz e outros 17 insurgentes morreram num bombardeamento aéreo à cidade, ocupada desde segunda-feira.

Segundo a agência de inteligência afegã, o Diretório Nacional de Segurança (NDS, na sigla inglesa), o "governador talibã na sombra", Mawlawi Salam, juntamente com o seu número dois, Zabih, e outros 16 insurgentes, morreram na noite de terça-feira num bombardeamento aéreo.

"Mawlawi Salam era comandante dos talibãs destacados em Kunduz. A sua morte significa um duro golpe para a moral e para os planos dos talibãs", afirmou o NDS, em comunicado.

Entre os mortos está também um cidadão do Paquistão, alegadamente pertencente ao Lashkar-e-Toiba, um grupo insurgente paquistanês particularmente ativo na Índia, onde já cometeu vários atentados, indicou a agência afegã.

Segundo o NDS, o "governador na sombra" e os outros insurgentes mortos planeavam atacar o aeroporto de Kunduz, a partir do qual se organiza a operação das forças afegãs para recuperar a cidade.

Os talibãs tomaram Kunduz na segunda-feira, na sua maior conquista militar desde que foram retirados do poder em 2001.

As forças afegãs lançaram na terça-feira uma ofensiva para recuperar Kunduz, com apoio aéreo dos Estados Unidos. A operação já lhes permitiu recuperar algumas partes da cidade.

De acordo com os dados mais recentes disponibilizados pelas autoridades, o número de mortos (quase todos talibãs, segundo informações oficiais) supera uma centena, registando-se quase 200 feridos.

Segundo o Governo afegão, os talibãs foram expulsos de edifícios como a sede da polícia e a prisão provincial, mas a operação militar continua com apoio aéreo dos Estados Unidos, que mantêm 9.800 militares no país em missão de combate.
