Turks seeking LPD and new submarines
Turkey has issued a request for
proposals for a Landing Platform
Dock (LPD) together with four
medium landing craft.
It is believed to be seeking a ship
of some 15,000 tons which will be
capable of moving a mechanised
battalion group. The request
includes two LCVPs and 27
amphibious assault vehicles and a
response is required by May 5.
Ankara also wants Landing
Ships Tank (LSTs) to replace the
53-year-old Terrebonne Parish
class ships acquired from the
United States in the early 1970s. It
is also seeking eight replacements
for the Landing Craft, Tank (LCT)
force with a view to updating its
amphibious capability by 2012.
The Turks are also likely to
launch a $2.5 billion competition
for six submarines in the near
future after five companies
responded to a request for
information on March 6. The
companies are Armaris,
Fincantieri, HDW, Navantia and
Lockheed Martin and the first boat
is to enter service in 2013.
