The Israeli M-346 trainee pilots and WSOs had a chance to simulate missions from Israel’s wars to connect with their heritage at the end of their Operational Training Course.

The 102nd Squadron is responsible for the advanced training of the IAF’s fighter pilots and Weapon Systems Officers on the M-346 or “Lavi”, as it is called locally. During the Operational Training Course (OTC) the aircrews replicate in the simulator missions and battles from the past Israel’s wars. The reason for that is simple, as explained by Maj. G, Commander of the OTC: “As an aircrew member, it is important to know our history. It’s a way to connect with our heritage in a practical way. It teaches us to handle stressful and challenging situations, which is something that we focus on often”.

The Israeli Air Force uses these courses as an intermediate stage between the completion of the aircrews’ basic flight training and their integration in the operational squadrons, much like the Lead-In Fighter Training (LIFT) courses done by many other air forces.

The press release further detailed the events of the exercise. During the first day the aircrews went through a “ground school” phase where they learned the history about Israel’s wars and connected it to the flights they would later simulate, and specifically the Six-Day War and its opening airstrikes of the Operation Focus, considered one of the most successful and significant wars in the country’s history. The officers also had a chance to meet aircrews that actually fought during the conflict that they were about to reenact.

The next phase begun with the commander giving mission orders and aircrews starting to plan the operation, which would also be the first complete air operation of the new graduates, combining everything they learned in a single mission. “We received the command and planned every aspect – fuel prep, adapting doctrine to the task, and mapping out possible scenarios. We created a briefing and prepared to destroy a base in the morning”, said one of the officers.

Once the planning was completed, the trainees went on to fly the mission in the M-346’s Full Mission Simulators, while the instructors continued to add obstacles and challenges to test their training. Maj. G. compared the differences between today’s encrypted communications between pilots and other assets and the radio silence that had to be preserved in 1967: “In this day and age, air controllers provide a wide picture and can speak freely over the controls. That wasn’t always the case, however. In the past, pilots would often have to identify targets alone and make decisions in radio silence to prevent leaking information”.

One of the missions simulated a two-ship flight departing for an airstrike on an enemy airfield, when suddenly the leader was shot down. The wingman had then to continue the mission alone, dealing with dogfights against enemy fighters trying to intercept him and surface-to-air missiles to get the job done and reach the mission’s objective, keeping a “balance between performing the mission and surviving”.

Keeping in line with real operations, the mission was followed by an extensive debriefing, with the aircrews discussing their flight performance while facing unplanned scenarios introduced by the instructors and sharing their individual conclusions with the other trainees.

THE LARGEST AND most diverse of the US Air Force’s Air Education and Training Command facilities, Sheppard Air Force Base sits in the heart of Texas, five miles north of Wichita Falls, to the northwest of Dallas. The parent unit at Sheppard AFB is the 82nd Training Wing (82nd TRW), which provides specialized technical and field training for officers, airmen and civilians of all branches of the US military, and foreign nationals. It also hosts the 80th Flying Training Wing (80th FTW), which conducts the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program. An internationally staffed and managed flying training system, ENJJPT produces combat pilots for the USAF and NATO, as the only international flying training program of its type in the world.

Student pilots attend the ENJJPT from NATO partners Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the US. For many years, Greece and Spain participated only by providing instructors, until Spain sent its first students to Sheppard at the end of 2019. After a hiatus, the UK began supplying instructors again in July 2019 and students from that August. Romania, the most recent ENJJPT member, sent its first students in May 2019, while Portugal is the sole non-active signatory. The ENJJPT trains 50% of all the USAF’s fighter pilots and is the only source of such pilots for Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway.

Lisbon eyes the Super Tucano
Embraer's Super Tucano light attack aircraft could be on the shopping list of the Portuguese Air Force given its good relationship with Embraer and the aircraft's presence at Monte Real Air Base in November, writes Jorge Ruivo

The EMB 314 Super Tucano spent a week under evaluation by the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) at Monte Real Air Base in Leiria, Portugal, last November. The FAP’s potential new acquisition was given a good opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities by flying day and night training missions, including trips to the Alcochete Shooting Range. The EMB 314 is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack missions and advanced instruction. It is especially well suited for counter-insurgency operations and combatting drug trafficking, as this Super Tucano is equipped with a sophisticated array of equipment, which allows the simulation of both air and land-based threats.

Since the operational end of the Alphajet, and the deactivation of Squadron 103 Caracois in 2018, advanced pilot instruction for the Portuguese Air Force has been conducted in the United States. It’s a situation that has presented an attractive business opportunity for Portugal. In 2015, two pilots from the Portuguese Air Force went to Natal Air Base in Brazil and integrated with Joker Squadron, which operates the Super Tucano. This bilateral exchange between the FAP and Brazilian Air Force allowed the Portuguese pilots to complete two courses: Operational Qualification and Instructor Programme on the EMB-314 and Fighter Aircraft Operational Specialisation.

In January 2021, the Portuguese Minister of Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, revealed his intention to create an international school for the training of military pilots, similar to those in Italy and Greece. The idea is to have a unit where military pilots from national and partner countries can be trained in modern aircraft. Given its yearround favourable weather conditions, the programme will be established at Beja Air Base, situated 100km north of the Algarve. Portugal's plan is a European multi-national project, involving nations that are modernising their combat aircraft fleets, but lack the resources to train their own pilots and want to avoid the expense of having to cross the Atlantic to train in the United States.

At the time of publication, no details have been provided on the type of aircraft that will be used at the training centre. However, there are rumours circulating that the candidates are the EMB-314 Super Tucano or Leonardo’s M-346 Master. Although it’s possible that both aircraft could be acquired, in order to introduce more training phases, the Super Tucano has to be the front-runner for the new training facility. The Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer has had two component factories at Evora in Portugal since 2012, and it controls Oficinas Gerais de Material Aeronáutico (OGMA), the maintenance and repair organisation selected to provide in-house or on-site support to the Tucano/Super-Tucano aircraft, with solutions ranging from lighter maintenance checks to avionics upgrades and full fleet support.

Taking into account the strengthening of relations between Embraer and Portugal through the FAP’s acquisition of the Embraer KC-390 Millennium military transporter, speculation that the FAP will acquire the Super Tucano is intensifying, because OGMA is an Embraer unit with the ability to perform the necessary maintenance on the EMB-314.

Portanto daqui se poderá depreender que o avistamento do M-346 Master na semana passada se tratará da sua avaliação.
Saudações Aeronáuticas,
Charlie Jaguar

Esqueçam o M-346, nos próximos 20 anos será Leonardo e Embraer.

O resto é para manter até cair.
