On this day: 50 years ago, F-4Cs from the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, led by Colonel Robin Olds, and “electronically” disguised as F-105s, tricked 16 North Vietnamese MiG-21s into battle at a disadvantage (January 2, 1967). The result: Seven MiGs went down over Phúc Yên, for zero American loses. Operation Bolo, the most elaborate sting in military aviation history, was a complete success! #USAF #Vietnam

In the late evening hours of January 30, 1968, the Vietnamese New Year began. This annual celebratory event, known as Tet, signaled the coming of more than just a new year and a new beginning for the people of Vietnam. As soldiers descended on U.S. encampments, bombs and gunfire rained down upon the American Embassy, and countless members of the military were taken prisoner or gunned down, the Tet Offensive signaled a changing tide in the Vietnam War upon that very evening.

Today, the Tet Offensive of early 1968 is known as one of the largest military efforts of the Vietnam War, a successful surprise attack conducted by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese People’s Army of Vietnam. The Vietnam War was an incredibly contentious time in both American and Vietnamese histories, and the Tet Offensive adds only further complications to the stories and moments of the war.

Still today, there is debate as to which army truly won the attack, and which side took control once the surprise wore off. So, who is to take the title of the victor in the aftermath of the Tet Offensive? Did the North Vietnamese exact the damage and destruction they hoped? Or do the U.S. and South Vietnamese forces lay claim to the victory?

When a violent Khmer Rouge regime under the leadership of Pol Pot overthrew the Khmer Republic government, backed by the US, Cambodia was in the state of emergency. One month after the Khmer Rouge seized power, an incident occurred involving an American merchant ship, SS Mayaguez. The SS Mayaguez was a container ship, working for the US military.

The Mayaguez was carrying 107 containers of routine cargo, 77 containers of government and military cargo, and 90 empty containers, all insured for $5 million. The Khmer Rouge never inspected the containers, and the exact contents had not been disclosed, but the Mayaguez had loaded containers from the U.S. Embassy in Saigon nine days before the fall of Saigon. The captain had a U.S. government envelope only to be opened in special circumstances, which he destroyed.

On May 12, 1975, the ship was en route to Thailand, sailing within the 12 nautical miles of the coast of Cambodia. The newly declared regime claimed that they were in the Cambodian territorial waters, even though the US recognized only three nautical miles off the coast of Cambodia as water under Khmer Rouge sovereignty. The Khmer Rouge stormed the ship with Swift Boats. They fired several machine gun rounds and a rocket-propelled grenade which were considered as warning shots.

Captain Miller, who was in charge on the Mayaguez sent an SOS and halted the ship. The Khmer Rouge boarded and forced the captain to change his course and anchor at the Poulo Wai island, under Cambodian control. The Cambodians insisted that the captain should proceed to Ream on the Cambodian mainland, but due to a radar malfunction on the ship, they were forced to stay at Poulo Wai. Meanwhile, the Americans were outraged, and President Ford’s administration was already preparing a rescue mission. The wounds from the Vietnam War were still raw, and the public demanded a swift reaction.

The Vietnam War was officially a war between North and South Vietnam. The North had allies in China, the Soviet Union, and other communist allies. The South had allies in the Philippines, the United States, and other anti-communist allies. This war ran from 1955 through to 1975.

The United States involvement in this war was viewed by the US government, and indeed the US citizens, as them preventing a Communist takeover of South Vietnam. The US wanted to carry out a containment policy wherever possible, to stop the spread of communism.

Carlos Hathcock was a genuine Vietnam War hero and an undisputed legend in the U.S. Marine Corps for his exploits in southeast Asia.

With a record of 93 confirmed kills but an estimated body count of between 300 – 400 enemy soldiers, Hathcock terrorized the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the Viet Cong.

Because of these exploits, he was honored by having a rifle named after him – the Springfield Armory M25 White Feather, so called for the nickname that NVA men gave him because he always wore a white feather in his cap.

Did you know that during the Vietnam War the U.S. flew 6 million sorties and dropped nearly 8 million tons of bombs on Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos? That’s four times the tonnage dropped during the entire course of #WWII.

On this day: 45 years ago, twelve Phantoms, from the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, released Paveway “smart” bombs, to finally knock down the Thanh Hóa Bridge in North Vietnam (April 27, 1972). Previously, 871 conventional sorties had only resulted in superficial damage to the bridge.

Thirty-one B-52s were lost in Southeast Asia. Eighteen were lost to surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) or ground fire, and the other 13 were non-combat losses. No B-52s were lost to communist aircraft, but during Operation Linebacker II, two B-52D tail gunners, Staff Sgt. Samuel Turner and Airman 1st Class Albert Moore, each shot down a MiG-21 on separate missions.

During a Linebacker II mission on Dec. 18, 1972, Turner became the first B-52 tail gunner credited with shooting down an enemy aircraft. For successfully defending his aircraft and crew, Turner received the Silver Star.

Jane Fonda is a world-known actress. She gained her well-deserved popularity in the 60s and 70s, starring in counterculture classics (Barbarella), drama films (They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?) and political thrillers (The China Syndrome). Her diverse acting career was also followed with adventurous escapades in writing, fashion modeling and political activism. Also, Jane Fonda became known as an expert yoga instructor.

Fonda’s role as a political activist came in the 1960s when America was deeply divided on the topic of the ongoing Vietnam War. She supported the Civil Rights Movement and opposed the US intervention in Vietnam. Fonda’s frequent visits to France during the 60s radicalized her views on politics and she became a supporter of the Black Panthers back in the States. She pointed out several times her unreserved support for the movement, calling the Black Panthers “our [US] revolutionary vanguard … we must support them with love, money, propaganda and risk.”

The Vietnam War lasted from 1 November 1955 to 30 April 1975, officially between North Vietnam (North Vietnam) and South Vietnam (South Vietnam). In reality, it was an international war between the French at first and then the United States and its allies on the side of South Vietnam, and the Communist Bloc on the side of North Vietnam

The US believed it was saving Vietnam from Communism while North Vietnam saw it as an extension of their fight for independence against colonial rule.

To counteract the superior armed and technology of the United States, North Vietnam combined modern weaponry with guerrilla tactics to deadly effect.

Air superiority is often a factor in combat that can lead to a decisive victory. However, when you are flying a Cessna 0-1 Bird Dog and firing your M16 out of the side window on a strafing run, you can be certain things are not going according to plan.

Captain Hilliard Wilbanks was flying over the jungles of Vietnam on a reconnaissance mission for an ARVN Ranger Battalion when he discovered they were walking right into a well-placed ambush.

Wilbanks began to drop a barrage of white phosphorus rockets to mark the enemy positions. Realizing they had been compromised, the Viet Cong began to charge the heavily outnumbered Rangers.

The ‘Huey’ – Legendary Workhorse of Vietnam War in 30 Pictures

When speaking about the Vietnam War what image comes to mind first? Every war has some iconic machines that exceeded expectations. For the Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indochina War), that title goes to the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed the Huey due to its original designation, HU-01. UH-01 was designed in 1955 and produced between 1957-1986.

During the Second Indochina War, over 7,000 Hueys were deployed in numerous forms and roles. Out of that number, over 3,000 were lost. From the start of mass production in 1960 over 16,000 were built in total, including civilian versions.

Beginning in 1962 and continuing until 1971, the United States military, with the approval of President John F. Kennedy, sprayed over twenty million gallons of herbicide over more than four and a half million acres in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia in order to defoliate the jungle and reduce the areas available for the North Vietnamese soldiers to hide in as well as to destroy crops.  The effects of that decision are still with us today.

The cases of the children, and now the grandchildren, of the thousands of people exposed to the defoliants suffering from birth defects and diseases, have reached an alarming level. But the United States Department of Veterans Affairs has continually dragged its feet regarding the acknowledgement of any correlation.

Medal of Honor: High on Marijuana Peter Lemon Single-Handedly Fought Off Two Waves of Vietcong

o be awarded a Medal of Honor, one should go beyond the usual comprehension of bravery. One has to set his mind to putting his own life on the line for the sake of others.

Medal of Honor heroes are born that way. They behave like heroes in peacetime as well as in wartime. They know their duty when the time comes no matter what the conditions are–not even if they are high on marijuana, as Peter Lemon was when he singlehandedly repelled an attack by North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldiers.

Britain provided covert assistance to western forces in the Vietnam War by flying secret missions over Laos, the daughter of a former Royal Air Force navigator has claimed.

Flight Lieutenant Donald Roberts, who was based in Asia with the RAF at the time, confided in his family decades later that he had taken part in flying Handley Page Hastings transport aircraft over Laos in the second half of 1962.

The alleged secret flights were designed to help close off the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a key logistics route that was used to resupply the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese army fighting in the South. The RAF helped to transport New Zealand SAS personnel and other cargo to the remote and mountainous area, Roberts told his daughter, Priscilla Roberts, a professor at City University of Macau, years after the event.

Air America CIA Airline Vietnam

During the Vietnam War, Air America, a CIA proprietary airline, flew a variety of missions in the Far East. These missions ranged from undercover CIA operations to overt air transportation. The Republic of Vietnam and various US Government agencies contracted with Air America. From the CIA archives

Lima 85 was a US radar facility that provided critical and otherwise unavailable all-weather guidance to F-105 fighter-bombers flying strike missions against Communist supply depots, airfields, and railroad yards in North Vietnam.

Recognizing the threat posed by this facility, the People’s Army of Vietnam Air Force made an unprecedented effort to destroy the radar equipment. On Jan. 12, 1968, four AN-2 Colt biplanes—painted dark green and modified to drop “bombs” improvised from 122-mm mortars and 57-mm rockets—took off from a North Vietnamese airfield to attack Lima 85.

At about 1:30 p.m., the Colts approached their target and split into two formations. While two of the aircraft circled in the area, the other two turned toward the mountain and conducted separate single bombing and strafing passes.

Air America pilot Ted Moore, in his unarmed UH-1D “Huey” helicopter, saw the biplanes attacking. Moore and his flight mechanic Glenn Woods took chase of the first Colt. Woods pulled out his AK-47 rifle and began firing at the lumbering biplane. The pursuit continued for more than 20 minutes until the second AN-2 flew underneath the helicopter and both airplanes attempted to gain altitude.

Moore and Woods watched as the first AN-2, apparently hit by gunfire, dropped and then crashed into a mountain ridge less than two miles west of the North Vietnamese border. Minutes later, the second Colt hit the side of a mountain located some three miles farther north of the first crash. The two AN-2 Colts circling to the southeast of Lima 85 did not take part in the attack and retreated back to North Vietnam.

The painting captures one North Vietnamese Colt fleeing and the other being pursued by the Air America Huey piloted by Moore, as mechanic Woods fires his AK-47 at the cockpit. This daring action by Moore and Woods gained them—and Air America—the distinction of having shot down an enemy fixed-wing aircraft from a helicopter, a singular aerial victory in the entire history of the Vietnam War.

On March 11, 1968, in a night raid, North Vietnamese commandos overran Lima 85 in the deadliest single ground loss of US Air Force personnel during the Vietnam War.  A year later, Woods was killed in action.

A singular aerial victory in the Vietnam War serves as a lasting and inspiring reminder of the heroism and courage of Air America employees. The moment is captured in a painting by Keith Woodcock entitled “Lima 85,” which now hangs at CIA Headquarters.

Why the M113 APC will be around for a long time
(Dung Tran)
To put it bluntly, the M113 armored personnel carrier looks like a big box on tracks. It's equipped with a primary weapon that's over 75 years old that isn't particularly effective against its modern contemporaries. And yet it's served with the United States Army for nearly sixty years and, even when it's retired, it'll stick around for a long time.

When it entered operational service in 1960, it was intended to haul 11 troops into battle. It had a crew of two: A driver and a vehicle commander who handled the vehicle's primary weapon, the M2 "Ma Deuce" heavy machine gun.

On this day: 55 years ago, the destroyer USS Maddox, supported by four F-8 Crusaders, engaged North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin (August 2, 1964). This incident coupled with another which took place two days later (often dubbed the "Tonkin Ghost incident") lead to the American intervention in Vietnam.

Did you know that the Soviet SA-7 Grail, infrared-homing missile, was used extensively during the final stages of the Vietnam War? The MANPADS downed its first aircraft (an O-2A Skymaster) in May 1972, and by April 1975 was credited with 40–50 kills (mostly against South Vietnamese helicopters).

Pfc.Nguyen Van Luong was riding in the back of an APC when enemy 60mm mortar round struck the hatch of the carrier, going through his helmet and lodging the live round into his shoulder, knocking him unconscious.

Capt. Harry Dinsmore was at the chow hall in Danang when he was called up for an emergency surgery.

When he saw the xrays, he thought it was a joke but soon realized it wasn't. He immediately called an explosive handler to help him, they surrounded the operating table with sandbags and he went to work.

The shell was removed within 30 minuted and it was dismantled outside.

Luong recovered within a few weeks and only suffered muscle damage.

Vietnam War: US, Australian and New Zealand forces launch Operation Hump, a search-and-destroy operation near Bien Hoa in South Vietnam

Attached to US forces, 1 RAR was primarily employed in search and destroy operations using the newly developed doctrine of airmobile operations, utilising helicopters to insert light infantry and artillery into an area of operations, and to support them with aerial mobility, fire support, casualty evacuation, and resupply.[13] The battalion commenced operations in late June 1965 and initially focussed on defeating the Viet Cong's wet season offensive. During this time US 173rd Brigade, including 1 RAR, conducted a number of operations into War Zone D—a major communist base area at the junction of Phuoc Long, Long Khanh, Bien Hoa and Binh Duong provinces—as well as in the Iron Triangle in November.
