Branson space centre for Portugal?
20/9/2008

Self-made billionaire Richard Branson has this week revealed Portugal could be an ideal venue to build a “spaceport”. While the founder of Virgin Atlantic said he was considering the idea of a Portuguese space centre, he added any further progress would only be discussed in four years time. In the meantime, Branson revealed his intention to invest in renewable energies here, and said he was building up to 20 new health clubs in the country, creating over a thousand new jobs.

While the world is gripped in the midst of economic turmoil, Portugal had reason to smile this week as Richard Branson revealed he was investing strongly in the country.

The cluster of investment possibilities was announced by the Virgin boss at a press conference held earlier this week in the Portuguese capital.

Following the conference, Branson admitted that discussions have already taken place with national authorities with a view to building a space centre.

The centre would be similar to the one currently under construction in New Mexico in the United States, from where the first space journeys will be launched.

To date, five Portuguese nationals have purchased a ticket to fly to space on a Virgin Galactic flight.

Tickets are being sold at $200,000 a passenger, with take-off scheduled for sometime between the end of 2010 and 2011.

Minister of Economy, Manuel Pinho, while admitting he was “surprised” at this news, swiftly added that the announcement reveals Richard Branson “hold the view that Portugal is a country of potential”.

Following the Lisbon press conference, Branson visited Oporto where he presided over the opening of the travel agency Caminho das Estrelas, which has the exclusive rights in Portugal to sell Virgin Galactic products.

Meanwhile, the Virgin boss further announced that a network numbering 15 to 20 health clubs is to be created in Portugal, and said they would generate more than one thousand new jobs.

“Obviously, they will be the thousand most healthy and active people in Portugal”, he said after visiting the first, and so far only health club in Oporto.

Investing an estimated eight million euros in each venue, most of the next Virgin Active health clubs will be built in the Greater Lisbon and Oporto areas

“They will be large clubs [measuring four thousand square metres and free parking], well equipped, well built, offering top quality servicer at an affordable price”, he explained.

“Should it become possible to build a space centre in Portugal, we hope that the people work out at our clubs so they can be in a good state of health for their visit to space”, he added.

When questioned if he was open to investing in other areas in Portugal, Branson responded positively, but explained: “But for now, I don’t want to be more specific.”

After spending “too many years without coming to Portugal”, Branson concluded by expressing his intention to also invest in renewable energies, announcing a 50,000-euro prize for innovative environmental-friendly projects created in Portugal.
