"The Urban Audit is a response by the European Commission to this growing demand for an assessment of the quality of life in European towns and cities, where a significant proportion of EU citizens live. This project is a joint effort by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, and the Directorate-General for Regional Policy to provide more comparable information on selected urban areas in Member States of the EU, Bulgaria and Romania.
"The cities were selected in collaboration with the national statistical offices, and are geographically dispersed to ensure a representative sample, meaning that the 258 cities chosen are not necessarily the largest."
Some of the results:
Largest EU cities: London (7.2M), Paris (6.2M), Berlin (3.4M),
Madrid (3.0M)and Rome (2.7M).
Fastest Growing: Palma de Mallorca (2.6% per year), Pamplona (2.3%), Badajoz (2.2%), Oulu (2.0%), and
Braga (1.5%).
Lowest Unemployment: Utrech (3.0%), Eindhoven (3.1%), Lefkosia (3.1%), Luxemborg (3.2%), and Stockholm (3.3%).
Youngest Population: Cayenne (30.1% under age 15), Saint Denis (25.5%), Derry (25.0%),
Ponta Delgada (22.1%), and Birmingham (22.0%).
