Syria rebels begin evacuating last stronghold in Homs as part of deal with govt

Dozens of insurgents began evacuating their last stronghold in Syria’s central city of Homs on Wednesday, AP said. A local deal with government forces allows militants safe passage to areas in the north. At least 320 gunmen are scheduled to leave the district on Wednesday, the governor of Homs, Talal Barazzi, said on the outskirts of Waer. A few thousand insurgents have been holed up in Waer, which government forces had blockaded for nearly three years, only sporadically allowing in food. The city of Homs will fully return to government control after the evacuation of rebels who include members of the Al-Qaeda branch in Syria, Al-Nusra Front, and other extremist and more moderate rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad. They are expected to go to areas further north in Hama and Idlib province. Around 300 civilians, mainly women and children, are also being evacuated from Waer.

Kerry to visit Moscow next week ‘for talks on Syria, Ukraine’

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday he will travel to Russia next week for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Syria and Ukraine, Reuters reported. Kerry was speaking during an event on the sidelines of the Paris climate talks. He said Russia “has been constructive” in trying to find a political solution to the Syrian conflict. “I will be traveling to Moscow in a week and will be meeting with [Putin] and [Foreign Minister Sergey] Lavrov on Syria and on Ukraine,” Kerry said.
