SMG Czech 25 9 mm (VZ 25)Fonte: http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/arms/submachg/armsmg2.htm (http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/arms/submachg/armsmg2.htm)
The VZ 25 was designed by Vaclav Holek and was produced in 1949 along with the VZ 23, VZ 24 and VZ 26. They differ only in cartridge and butt stock. The VZ 25 is a standard 9 mm x 19 Parabellum and has a folding metal stock. The VZ 23 and the VZ 25 were in service with the Czech army in 1951 and 1952 and were then replaced by the 7.62 mm VZ 24 and VZ 26 which remained in service until 1962. One innovation was the placing of the magazine inside the pistol grip. Two sizes were made, one holding 24 rounds and the other holding 40 rounds.

Here's the text i've received from one of my correspondents from Slovakia:
Samopal 23 was a progressive submachinegun (at that time). It has compact size, but a relatively long barrel and allows one-hand fire. This is his history:
History:
This submachinegun has been developed during years 1948-1949 in Ceska Zbrojovka Strakonice (prototypes H/p, CZ 447, CZ 148). The main constructor was J. Holecek, other important participating constructors were J. Cermak, F. Myska, J. Kratochvil, V. Zibara. The final weapon design was derived from a considerably modified prototype CZ 447. On 10th august 1948, the submachinegun was accepted by army under name "9 mm samopal vz. 48a" (with a solid wooden stock) and "9 mm samopal vz. 48b" (with a folding stock). The mass production of submachinegun began in 1949 in CZ Uhersky Brod (in 01/01/1948, the factory was renamed as Zavody presneho strojirenstvi Uhersky Brod). In spring 1950, the machinegun was renamed:
from Sa vz. 48a to Sa 23 (solid stock)
from Sa vz. 48b to Sa 25 (folding stock)
NOTE: Sa vz. 23 ( or 24, 25, 26) doesn't exist!!! Only Sa 23, 25, 24, 26. Number 23 (or 24, 25, 26) doesn't indicate year, so never put word "vzor" or "vz." (which means "model") to the name of this submachine gun. The number in the name of submachinegun indicates only some numerical specification. The mistake that I described is very spread (even in Czech rep./Slovakia).
In year 1950, because of unification with Soviet Union army, the production of Sa 23/25 in cal. 9 mm Parabellum ended. The weapon has been modified for caliber 7.62x25 (Tokarev). On 11th june 1951, the modified weapons were accepted by czechoslovak army as Sa 24 (solid stock) and Sa 26 (folding stock). After that, the previous submachineguns 23 and 25 were discarded from army and offered to the public militia (or other armed sections), a lot of submachineguns was sold to the other countries. Sa 24/26 has not been in the service for a long time, because in 1958 it was replaced with a new assault rifle Sa vz. 58.
Whole production of Sa 23/25 was about 136 000 pcs. Sa 23/25 were seen in the action in these countries: Tchad, Grenada, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Chile, South Africa rep., Cambodia, Capo Verde, Cuba, Libanon, Libya, Mosambic, Niger, Nikaragua, Peru, Somalia, Syria, Tansania etc - maybe these submachineguns are still in service in some countries (armed forces, guerrillas...). In South Africa rep. in years 1977-1980, there has been produced a simplified semiautomatic version of Sa 25 under name Sanna 77. And... of course, the famous submachinegun UZI was patterned after Sa 25 (magazine in the grip, breech enclosing the barrel etc.). Nowadays, these submachineguns are not used in any czech/slovak armed forces, sometimes is found when a crime is commited.
Technically, al M23 SMGs were blowback operated, select fire firearms. The trigger works as a fire selector - short trigger pull produces sinle shot, while long pull produces burst fire. The wrap-around bolt has firing pin fixed into it near its rear end and encloses the breech part of the barrel with the most of its lenght when closed. Gun fires from the open bolt. Box magazines are inserted into the pistol handle (much like most semi-auto pistols, but first of all SMGs). All M23 family SMGs has built-in magazine loading device at the right side of the front guard, which is designed for loading box magazines from 8-rounds stripper clips. The charging handle is located at the left side of the gun. The sights are: hooded blade front sight and distance-ajustable drum rear ones.
The 7.65 and 9mm models can be distinguished by the magazine insertion: 7.65mm models have magazines that slope forward whereas those of the 9mm models are vertical.
UZI had been developed on the basis of the Czech M23 and 25 submachine gun, utilising its overall design and many features, but with completely different receiver (rectangular instead of round in cross-section) and other changes.

A small number of armored recce vehicles were fabricated at the Puert Cabello Naval Arsenal. These were rather similar to a turtle in appearance and thus were dubbed "Tortuga" ( Turtle) The "Tortuga" was designed by an engineer called Tomás Pacanins,. The chassis was a Ford 6x4 commercial vehicle, a rotating turret, and armed according to with a Vickers Mk, 4b 7 mm machine gun (the ones shown on the photo above show a Hotchkiss Mod. 1931 13.2 mm according to Dr. Georg von Rauch). It is believed that 12 units were built but only five were displayed. In the event the vehicles were poorly designed, offered poor visibility and no ventilation. The extreme overhang on their bodies rendered them clumsy at hard to maneuver.

Scout Car S1 (American), was an armoured car produced in Australia for the US Army during the Second World War
History and description
In 1942 the United States Army Force in Australia issued a requirement for a light armoured car for patrolling and airfield defence. The requirement resulted in a vehicle designated Scout Car S1 (American). About 40 vehicles were produced by Ford Australia.
The vehicle was based on a Ford F15 4x2 chassis (a single 4x4 vehicle was built). The open-topped armoured hull was similar to that of the M3 Scout Car. The armament consisted of one .50 inch heavy machine gun and two .30 inch machine guns on a skate rails, operated by the crew of five.

Maunsell also designed forts for anti-aircraft defence. These were larger installations comprising seven interconnected steel platforms, five carried guns arranged in a semi-circle around the control centre and accommodation — the seventh set further out than the gun towers was the searchlight tower.
Maunsell Sea FortsThree forts were placed in the Mersey.
A further three were sited in the Thames estuary:
Nore (U5),
Red Sands (U6)
Shivering Sands (U7).
Each of these AA forts carried four QF 3.75 inch guns and two Bofors 40 mm guns. During the war the forts shot down 22 aircraft and about 30 flying bombs. They were decommissioned by the MoD in the late 1950s.

In 1879 the Gardner Machine Gun was demonstrated for the first time. A two-barrelled weapon operated by crank which loaded and fired each barrel in turn. The feed system was a grooved strip into which the rims of a box of cartridges could be slid, after which the box was removed. In public trials the gun fired 10,000 rounds in 27 minutes. This impressed military leaders from Britain and the following year the British Army purchased the gun.

It is equipped with a charger in quincunx of 6 cartridges of 7,65 mm mauser and functions by short recoil of the barrel.

Pre-1916 Lee-Enfields were also equipped with interesting device, called the "volley" sights. This device was mounted at the left side of the stock, ahead of the magazine, and was used to provide an indirect fire capability at the ranges from 2 000 and up to outstanding 3 900 yards (1800 - 3550 meters). While the individual marksmanship at such ranges with rifle was a nonsense, the salvo firing by large squads at the distant and large targets (such as tight infantry or cavalry formations) can do some damage to the enemy. This was, obviously, an idea of the pre - machine gun and pre - light artillery period, and it was happily dropped during the WW1.

BENRUS TYPE I An American made Special Forces wrist watch. Primarialy used by military divers such as UDT and Navy Seal teams in the Jungles of Vietnam. Also issued as a navigators watch for helicopter and jet pilots. The Type I was first issued during the Vietnam War in 1971 and was produced until 1975. Its fat case and general appearance are very much like a Rolex Submariner, with a highly legible, unlettered black face. It has a high quality 17 jewel automatic ETA mechanical movement. The case back has full mil-spec markings:
MIL-W-50717 TYPE I CLASS A BENRUS 6645-00-477-4210 X7953 N00104-77-D-5156 NOV 1979 SERIAL NO. xxxx U.S.
The Type I Class A dive watch has in many experts opinions the perfect dial for military use. With its field-proven case design it is the only U.S. military issued watch to feature an ETA Swiss automatic movement. Not only that, it was made under its own unique United states military specification; known as the MIL-W-50717 specification. As far as I am aware of, no other watch besides the Benrus was made under that particular specification. Also, the watch was designated CLASS A, which is essentially the highest classification awarded to any military watches.

Hi, Here we have a rare winter trigger assy. or Winterabzug for the MG 34 and MG 42. What makes this one unusual are the markings. It's the only one like it that I've ever seen. I picked up two of these on vacation in Germany last summer and am keeping one. It's in excellent condition with only minor wear mostly on the inside where it contacts the grip frame. It's all complete with the pins and rollers. This is the universal, sheet metal winter trigger that can be used on either the MG34 or MG42 by simply adjusting the roller placement. It is maker marked chs for Georg Sindermann Werke, Mallmitz. It is in perfect condition with no damage, rust, pitting or other problems. This trigger is identical to the one pictured in Folke Myrvang's book: "MG34-MG42 - German Universal Machineguns".
Very interesting. You will get the exact item in the picture, no substitutions.. I only have the one to sell!

For Saudi Arabia, Thomson-CSF (now Thales[1]) developed a specific version of the Crotale known as "Shahine". The main visible differences are a) the carrier (an AMX 30 armored carrier instead of the non protected classic carrier), and b) a six missile firing unit (instead of four). The purpose of the changes was to allow the Shahine firing and acquisition units to follow and protect the armored units of the Saudi Armed Forces on the battle field.

The New PEARL Concept
An entirely new approach was chosen in the development: in the place of a prefragmented fragmentation jacket, preformed ball-shaped fragments, PEARLs, are applied to the outside of the basic body. Tests revealed astonishing results: at the same diameter as the HG 85, an up to 70% higher performance was achieved. By decreasing the body's diameter and using an optimized fuse it has been possible to substantially reduce the total weight to approx. 330g (compared with 465g of the HG 85).
This weight reduction makes the soldier's equipment lighter, i.e. the person can carry more Hand Grenades or gains agility thanks to the lighter pack. It eventually also permits to throw the Hand Grenade a longer distance and more precisely.
PEARL penetrates bullet-proof jackets according to STANAG 4512
The PEARL's fragmentation capacity is the highest worldwide despite the reduced diameter of the basic body. Some of the PEARL configurations penetrate both steel plate of 2mm thickness at a distance of five metres and bullet-proof vests as per STANAG 4512.
The basic body is available in different diameters, which has consequences for the quantity of explosive and the fragments' departure velocity. Steel balls of different diameters can be applied in one or two layers. This defines the penetration energy and the number of effective fragments.

A specialised air-deployable armoured fighting vehicle was developed to carry the Malkara. Based on the British Army's FV1611 Humber Pig armoured truck, it carried two Malkara missiles on a retractable boom at the rear, and could be air-dropped on a cluster of 6 parachutes. While this did mean that airborne forces could pack a weapon that could destroy tanks from outside the effective range of tank gunnery, by the time the AT-3 Sagger appeared it must have looked like an awfully complicated way to deploy just two missiles.

The AN/PED-1 LLDR provides a unique capability to Forward Observers, Forward Air Controllers and Naval Gunfire Spot Teams. The system can recognize targets in day/night/obscurant conditions, range to the target at an eyesafe wavelength, and calculate grid coordinates with its own GPS/Elevation/Azimuth capability. The system then provides this information to other members of the Digital Battlefield. Also included is a NATO coded laser designator for use with Semi-Active Laser Guided Missiles and Laser Spot Trackers.

The Turkish Army Pilot's badge was fashioned after German and Austrian qualification badges of the period.
Established in 1914 by a French Officer, the Turkish Air Force came under the command of a German officer, Erich Sarno, after the outbreak of hostilities, and grew steadily during the war years thanks to an influx of German planes and pilots, as well as concerted efforts to train Ottoman pilots and observers.
There was also a Navy Pilot and Observer's badge, of a slightly different design.

The Hakim Rifle is a gas operated semi-automatic rifle. It was originally designed by Sweden and produced as the AG-42 Ljungman for the Swedish Army. The tooling and design were later sold to Egypt, and the Hakim was produced there during the 1950s and 1960s. The gas operated system is adjustable by use of a special tool on a valve at the front of the gas tube. The gas system is very simple direct impingement type whereby the flow of gas impacts directly on the front face of the bolt carrier, propelling it to the rear, which unlocks and moves the bolt as it does so. The U.S. M16 rifle utilizes a comparable system, except the flow of gas into the system is not adjustable and a self regulating device of the Johnson/Stoner type is built into the bolt carrier assembly.
The Hakim features a Tokarev-pattern tipping bolt system as used in the FN49, Russian SKS and French MAS56 rifles. The rifle is available in 8x57 mm (aka 8 mm Mauser) caliber, 192 grain (12g) bullet only, and has a removable 10 round magazine intended to be reloaded with 5 round stripper clips. It was replaced in the 1960s by the Soviet AK-47 but was kept in military reserve. In more recent years, it has been observed in the hands of some Egyptian police units.

The PGM Mini-Hecate rifle is intended for long range anti-personell sniping work, and fills the gap between the 7.62mm (.308) sniper rifles and heavy and large .50 BMG rifles. This rifle was designed by the Chris Movigliatti of the ASMP company (Swiss) and is made by the PGM Precision of France. Rifle is sold worldwide through the famous Belgian company FN Herstal and its subsidiaries.
Mini-Hecate .338 features a modern design with metallic "skeleton" on which all components are mounted. The receiver is made from high grade aluminium alloy, the steel bolt has three lugs that lock into the barrel extension. Barrel is made by Lothar Walther, cold hammer forged and externally fluted to save the weight and improve heat dissipation. Barrel equipped with high efficiency muzzle brake. Furniture (pistol grip and forearm) is made from polymer and is mounted to the frame. The buttstock is made from metall and has a recol pad. Buttstock is ajustable for lenght of pull and height, and can be folded to the left side of the gun. Special ajustable folding support ("third leg") is provided under the buttstock to help to maintain rifle in stable position for longer periods of time.
Mini-Hecate is intended for sniper work at the distances from about 500 to 1200 meters. At the shorter distances the .338 Lapua is too powerful, and unless you need a deep penetration, the Mini Hecate wold be an overklill choice. At the distances beyond 1200 meters the standard .338 Lapua bullet will become subsonic and accuracy and effectivness will be decreased. But within its envelope this rifle can show accuracy of about 0.5 MOA, which is quite good. Of cause, this requires sniper-grade ammunition and highly trained operator. Anyway, the PGM .338 Mini-Hecate is a first class sniper rifle, and there's a rumour that Swiss Army is looking for purchasing some PGM .338's.

The Sentinel tank was designed in Australia in World War II in response to the war in Europe, and to the threat of Japan expanding the war to the Pacific or even a possible Japanese invasion of Australia.
The Australian Cruiser tank Mark 1 (AC1) was designated "Sentinel", and initially intended to be a true Cruiser tank. Like the Canadian Ram it was based on the engine, drive train, and lower hull of the American M3 Medium tank but the Australian tank was built closely along the lines of a British Crusader. Trying to keep pace with German tanks the design specifications quickly became more like an American Medium tank. The few Sentinels that were built never saw action as Australia's Armoured Divisions had been equipped by that time with British and American tanks.
"Cheira-me" a "palpite", mas siga...
The Type 97 20 mm Anti-tank rifle was a Japanese anti-tank rifle used during the Second World War. It had an automatic action which gave it the high rate of fire. On the downside the recoil from the large round was very violent. The gun could be fitted with a protective shield pushing the total weight up to 68 kg (150 lb). The Ho-1 and Ho-3 automatic aircraft cannon were developed from the Type 97.

The Division of Customs and Insular Affairs was organized on 13 December 1898. This Division was responsible for the administration of U.S. possessions and islands under military occupation. The War Department managed some of the possessions and the State Department managed some of the affairs. In 1902, the Bureau was established with the War Department responsible for all of the possessions. The insignia was authorized on 31 December 1902 in General Regulations and amended by General Orders No. 132 on the same date. The Bureau was transferred from the War Department to the Department of Interior in 1939.

Volkssturmgewehr 1-5CitarThe Volkssturmgewehr 1-5 is a 7.92 x 33 mm (7.92 mm Kurz) caliber semi-automatic rifle developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. Also known as the VG 1-5, Volkssturm-Gewehr 1-5, Versuchs-Gerat 1-5 and "Gustloff." It was intended to be used by the Volkssturm militia.
Volkssturmgewehr 1-5 used a gas-delayed blowback action based on the Barnitzke system, whereby gas bled from the barrel near the chamber creates resistance to the rearward impulse of the operating parts, which ceases when the projectile leaves the muzzle, allowing the operating parts to be forced rearward by the residual pressure of the cartridge case. This principle has been used most successfully in the Heckler & Koch PSP or P7 pistol.
The VG 1-5 is constructed rather like many automatic pistols, it has a casing and spring around the barrel and the whole casing recoils backward. The breach block, with firing pin and extractor, is pinned to the back end of the barrel casing. The rear end of the gun does not recoil and has the hammer, sear and trigger built into it. Gas coming from four vents, near the end of the of the barrel hold the bolt closed till the gas pressure drops to a safe level. The VG 1-5 used the same 30 shot 7.92 x 33 mm (7.92 mm Kurz) caliber magazine as the Sturmgewehr 44. Some selective-fire VG 1-5 were made.

The Type 4 Ho-Ro was a Japanese turret-less self-propelled gun that mounted a 150mm Type 38 howitzer which was protected by a gun shield. The Type 38 howitzer was capable of firing a 79lb shell 6,000 metres and was based on a design by the German arms-manufacturer Krupp. The chassis itself was a modified Type 97 Chi-Ha chassis. Generally The Type 4 was deployed in four vehicle batteries and where used in the Philippines during the final months of the Second World War. Occasionally the Type 4 Ho-Ro is incorrectly referred to as the Type 38 Ho-Ro

In 1848 Morgan James of Utica, N.Y. invented the long-tube telescopic sight that would be used by Civil War marksmen just 13 years later. Priced at about $20, these telescopes were no more than four power. But in the hands of a skilled soldier with a sharp wit and keen eye, these devices offered sufficient magnification for aiming a rifle with deadly, long-distance accuracy.
The long-tube sight mounted on a heavy benchrest rifle gave the marksman who was selected to carry it prestige among his fellow soldiers. The sharpshooter thus armed was considered an independent character, used only for special service, with the privilege of going to any part of the line where in his own judgement he could do the most good. The weapon indicated that the man carrying it was among the most trusted soldiers and best shots.
Some of the prewar American-made benchrest rifles found their way into the Confederate army, however the preferred weapon of the Southern sharpshooter was the Whitworth rifle imported from England. Shortly after the Civil War, the army replaced these ponderous weapons and their long telescopic sights with more modern, faster-firing rifles, and the benchrest was no longer used by the military.

The Rollbomben ("roll bombs") weapons are closely related to the Handgranaten, although they carried a considerably bigger punch. The smallest model weighed 1kg and contained 700g of explosive; bigger models contained 3 and 3.5kg of explosives respectively. A monster in this family was the Rollbombe 30kg, It was a large ball of 30cm diameter and weighing 30kg made of reinforced concrete with 4kg of scrap metal pieces cast in that contained 5.5kg of explosives. It's detonation reportedly was of spectacular effect.
Nevertheless, the Rollbomben never grew beyond being a rather odd weapon and weren't too numerous

To replace the T-33A, Portugal signed a letter of intent with the Skyfox Corporation in the middle of the 1980s for twenty conversion kits. The Forca Aerea Portuguesa (FAP) proposed that Oficinas Gerais de Material Aeronautico (OGMA) in Alverca would undertake the conversions, but insufficient orders were obtained from other nations to motivate Boeing to continue with the project.
USA
Even the USAF was interested in the Skyfox. It was orginally planned to demonstrate the Skyfox at Farnborough International 1986, but the aircraft was tested at the time by the USAF. Eventually, the USAF did not purchase the Skyfox.

UB-88 was one of six U-boats handed over to the United States by Great Britain after the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. This small group of U-boats, dubbed “The Ex-German Submarine Expeditionary Force” had a dual mission: educate the U. S. Navy about technological innovations achieved by the Imperial Navy in submarine development and serve as a publicity vehicle for the U. S. Government’s efforts to fund its war deficit through the issuance of Victory Bonds. During the trip from Harwich, England, to her final arrival at the submarine base in San Pedro, California, she and her crew made calls to ports along the Atlantic coast, Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi River, coast of Panama and the West coast, “steaming” a total of 15,361 miles. Forty-five cities were visited, and over 400,000 visitors were shown through the boat. She was laid up for the next four months before being dismantled and decommissioned. Having concluded her mission, UB-88 was sunk by the U.S. Navy on January 3, 1921 in a live fire exercise.

This design was based on the British MkI. These helmets were used by Portugal into the 1930s, thus this particular example features the later liner that likely replaced the old British style version. Likewise this helmet features the transfer of the Defensa Civil Territorial.

Uma Harley Davidson???
Construida de 1932 a 1935???
Armored Harley Davidson Motorcycle
The Danish goverment between the wars was not generous with any military budget. So the army came up with the idea of "The Armored Motorbike". The Swedish factory Landsverk AB built the armor to the drawings made by the Danish army, and it was put on top of a Harley Davidson armed with a light machinegun. This was more than even a Harley could cope with. It was difficult to control on ordinary road, and a 3x1 vehicle with overloaded suspension wasn't impressive in terrain. It was decided to abandon the project. However, Danish motorbikes knocking out German armored cars and light tanks shows, the idea wasn't totally without merit. This was built 1932 and and dropped in 1935. After the trials the army decided to purchase the Danish Nimbus.

15th Special Operations Squadron emblem significance: Blue represents the sky, the primary theater of Air Force operations. Yellow signifies the sun and the excellence required of Air Force personnel. The globe reflects the worldwide scope of special operations. The winged dagger is symbolic of the squadron's ability to deliver precision operations anywhere and anytime. The flames allude to bomb blasts and recall the squadron's predecessor unit (15th Bombardment Squadron). They also signify the five theater commands to which the squadron provides support and point out the specialized nature of most special operations missions.

T-28 Super Heavy Tank
The T28 (later called 105 mm Gun Motor Carriage T95) was a prototype heavily armoured tank destroyer, designed for the US Military during the Second World War. It was originally designed to be used to break through German defenses at the Siegfried Line, and was later considered as a possible participant in an invasion of the Japanese mainland.
It had no conventional turret, giving it a comparatively low profile. Its total weight when fully equipped would have reached ninety-five tons. The armor was very thick compared to tanks of the time, in some places up to twelve inches thick (thirty centimetres). This was considered heavy enough to provide protection from the 88 mm gun used by German heavy tanks. The engine was an underpowered gasoline Ford GAF V-8, delivering 410 hp, which gave it a top speed of about 8 mph (13 km/h). This also meant that the tank had only limited obstacle climbing capabilities and this, in addition to the fact that no suitable portable bridges capable of carrying its weight were available mitigated against production for combat deployment. Because of the tank destroyer's great weight, it used four tracks instead of two. The outer tracks could be detached for easier transport. After removal they could be fixed together to make a unit that could be towed behind the tank.
T28 at the Patton Museum, 2003Its main armament was a 105 mm T5E1 gun in a ball-shaped mantlet, set into the front of the hull. It also had a fifty-caliber machine gun above the commander's hatch.
Although sometimes referred to as a Super-heavy tank the T28 was, in reality, a very heavy tank destroyer, and was re-designated as the 105 mm Gun Motor Carriage T95 in 1945. In 1946 it was renamed again, to T28.
T28 at the Patton Museum, 2003The original plan was for five prototype vehicles with a production total of 25. However only two were ordered and neither saw combat. One was heavily damaged by an engine fire during trials and was scrapped. The remaining prototype was discovered abandoned in a back field at Fort Belvoir. It is the only remaining example of these tanks and can be viewed at the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor in Kentucky.

The Logistics branch insignia depicts a diagonally crossed cannon and key surmounted by a ship’s steering wheel. Bearing on the hub is a stylized star. Inscribed on the ship’s wheel is the Latin phrase, “Sustinendum Victoriam,” which means “Sustaining Victory.” Soldier red is the Logistics branch color. The key represents the Quartermaster branch’s supply and service responsibilities; the ship’s wheel denotes the Transportation branch’s responsibilities for the movement of troops, supplies, and equipment; the cannon represents the Ordnance branch’s responsibilities for maintenance and munitions; and the stylized star represents the unity and integration of logistics functions.

One of the pilots flying patrol after dawn alert of 25 October 1944 reported the approach of Japanese Center Force. Steaming straight for "Taffy 3" were 4 battleships, 7 cruisers, and at least 12 destroyers. This force unfortunately included the Japanese battleship Yamato. Johnston's gunnery officer later reported, "We felt like little David without a slingshot." In less than a minute Johnston was zigzagging between the six little escort carriers and the Japanese fleet and putting out a smoke screen over a 2,500-yard front to conceal the carriers from the enemy gunners: "Even as we began laying smoke, the Japanese started lobbing shells at us and the Johnston had to zigzag between the splashes.... We were the first destroyer to make smoke, the first to start firing, the first to launch a torpedo attack...."[2]
For the first 20 minutes, Johnston was helpless as the enemy cruisers and battleships had her in range. But the destroyer's 5 inch guns could not yet reach them. Not waiting for orders, Commander Ernest E. Evans broke defensive formation, and went on the offensive by ordering Johnston to speed directly towards the enemy—first a line of seven destroyers, next one light and three heavy cruisers, then the four battleships. To the east appeared three other cruisers and several destroyers. Amazingly, the enemy gunners could not score a hit on Johnston.
As soon as range closed to within 10 miles, Johnston opened her 5 inch battery on the nearest cruiser, Kumano, scoring damaging hits. About this time an 8 inch shell landed right off her bow, its red dye splashing the face of Johnston’s gunnery officer, Lt. Robert C. Hagen. He mopped the dye from his eyes while remarking, "Looks like somebody's mad at us!"[2] In 5 furious minutes, Johnston pumped over 200 rounds at the enemy, then Cmdr. Evans ordered, "Fire torpedoes!" The destroyer got off 10 torpedoes then whipped around to retire behind a heavy smoke screen. When she came out of the smoke a minute later, Kumano could be seen burning furiously from a torpedo hit; Kumano’s bow had been blown completely off. Johnston had taken three 14 inch shell hits from the battleship Kongo, followed closely by three 6 inch shells, from either a light cruiser or possibly the Yamato, hitting the bridge. The hits resulted in the loss of all power to the steering engine, all power to the three 5 inch guns in the after part of the ship, and rendered the gyrocompass useless. A rainstorm came up and Johnston "ducked into it" for a few minutes of rapid repairs and salvage work. The bridge was abandoned and Commander Evans, who had lost two fingers on his left hand, went to the aft steering column to conn the ship.

The TP-82 pistol (Russian: ТП-82) is a triple-barreled Soviet firearm that was carried by cosmonauts on space missions.
It is intended as a survival aid to be used after landings and before recovery in the Siberian wilderness. The upper two smoothbore barrels use 12.5 mm caliber ammunition, and the lower rifled barrel use 5.45 mm caliber ammunition. The pistol can be used for hunting, to defend against predators and for visual and auditory distress signals. The detachable buttstock is also a machete sheath.
TP-82s were carried regularly on Soviet and Russian space missions from 1986 to 2006. They were part of the Soyuz Portable Survival Kit In 2007, the media reported that the remaining ammunition for the TP-82 had become unusable and that a regular automatic pistol would be used on future missions.

The Borgward B 1 (SdKfz 300) was a German unmanned, expendable remote-controlled mine clearance vehicle of the Second World War produced from 1939 to 1940. The Borgward B 1 was designed to tow mine-detonation rollers across minefields, clearing a path. It was cheaply made so as to be disposable.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
