New Polish 1st Legions Infantry Division created and to receive best equipment available

Mariusz Błaszczak, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, on January 9 approved the concept of creating the 1st Legions Infantry Division, Ewa Korsak reports in Polska Zbrojna. The new formation is to operate in the east of Poland, primarily in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, and its soldiers will receive the latest equipment available to the Polish army. The division will consist of four brigades.

"We are saturating the eastern part of our country with the Polish Army. Today I accepted the concept of creating the 1st Legions Infantry Division », said Deputy Prime Minister Mariusz Błaszczak in Białystok, where he met with the soldiers of the 18th Reconnaissance Regiment. The new tactical unit is to be developed primarily in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, Ewa Korsak reports. "The 1st Legions Infantry Division will be established between the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship, where the 16th Mechanized Division operates, and the Mazowieckie and Lubelskie Voivodships, where the 18th Mechanized Division operates", said Błaszczak.

It will be the 5th tactical formation in the land forces (the other four are: the 11th Armored Cavalry Division and the 12th, 16th and 18th Mechanized Divisions). We create it in a "four" system: the division will have four brigades, and each of them will consist of four battalions", said the Deputy Prime Minister who also informed that the units will be located in the cities of the Podlaskie Voivodeship: Łomża, Grajewo, Kolno, Czerwony Bór and Siemiatycze.

In addition to the mechanized battalions, an artillery battalion will also be created. "The experience of the war in Ukraine shows that artillery plays a key role in effective defense", noted the head of the Ministry of National Defense. The headquarters of the 1st Legions Infantry Division will be located in Ciechanów. A tank battalion will also be established in this city. "The choice of these locations is supported by military analyzes", noted Mariusz Błaszczak. The Deputy Prime Minister added that some units of the new division will be created this year.

The 1st Legions Infantry Division will be equipped with the most modern weapons. It will receive, among others, K2 tanks, Abrams tanks, K9 howitzers, Krabs and Gladius unmanned systems. " We want to make the most of the purchased weapons, which are already reaching Poland", said Mariusz Błaszczak.

Gen. Brig. Norbert Iwanowski, former commander of the 15th Mechanized Brigade, and former head of the Intelligence Analysis Department at the General Staf, said: "I based it on three pillars: the first, designated by Deputy Prime Minister Mariusz Błaszczak, is the framework for the shape of the division, its size and the equipment it will have. The second pillar is the experience of forming the 18th Mechanized Division. The third is both building the size of the division (it's about soldiers and equipment) and achieving combat capability in the domestic and allied context". The general announced that the 1st Legions Infantry Division would be capable of military combat and combat against non-military threats, such as the effects of natural disasters.

The new tactical relationship refers to the historical 1st Infantry Division of Józef Piłsudski's Legions. "This formation became famous for its tough and decisive attitude in 1920, when it regained Białystok from the Russians", reminded Deputy Prime Minister Błaszczak.

PGZ and Hyundai ROTEM signed am agreement for building the K2PL tank in Poland beginning 2026. K2PL is the custom variant developed especially for polish requirements.
The K2 dropped the MTU/Renk engine/transmission for SK Hyundai & SNT.
Poland will integrate production.

They plan to build 820 K2PLs, adding to the 180 K2s supplied by SK beginning 2022.

PGZ from Poland conducts amphibious and firing tests with Borsuk IFV

The new Polish amphibious infantry fighting vehicle Borsuk is undergoing its most important tests on land and water, as shown by PGZ on its Twitter account. An integral part of this test is firing the anti-tank guided missile.

Borsuk  IFV during amphibious tests (Picture source: Screenshot from video footage of Polsat TV Poland)

Borsuk (Badger) is an amphibious infantry fighting vehicle produced by Huta Stalowa Wola, a part of PGZ (Polish Armaments Group). It is designed to replace the obsolete BWP-1 (Polish designation for BMP-1) IFV currently in service with the Polish Armed Forces. Although often referred to as BWP Borsuk, BWP is not a part of the name but the Polish abbreviation for Bojowy Wóz Piechoty - Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

Borsuk is powered by a powerpack consisting of a 720 hp (530 kW) MTU 8V199 TE20 turbo diesel engine, which drives a 6-gear (4 forward and 2 reverse gears) Perkins X300 automatic transmission. The hydropneumatic suspension is designed specifically for the Borsuk and consists of six independent in-arm units on each side. Borsuk is able to use different types of tracks: it was presented on different occasions outfitted with steel tracks or composite rubber tracks (CRT).

The vehicle is fully amphibious without any special preparations - crossing a body of water only requires raising the trim vane (which can be done from the driver seat without the necessity of leaving the vehicle). In the water, Borsuk is propelled by two water jets with rotating nozzles and steering capability.

The Borsuk's maximum speed is 65 km/h on the road and 8 km/h in the water. Its operational range is 550 km.

Borsuk is fitted with a ZSSW-30 remotely controlled turret armed with a 30mm Mk.44S Bushmaster II chain gun and a coaxial 7.62 mm UKM-2000C machine gun. The turret also features two Spike-LR anti-tank guided missiles in a launch container mounted on its right side. The ZSSW-30 provides around 300 autocannon rounds, including over 200 ABM rounds, and 250 machine gun rounds in ready-to-use mode. This is one of the biggest first-stage ammunition racks when compared to other similar systems.

Using a separate ATGM launch container, as opposed to other systems where the launcher extends directly from an internal compartment of the turret, has some advantages. Among those are the separation of the missiles from the rest of the turret (and thus greater safety of the crew and the turret itself) and the ability to quickly replace damaged or destroyed containers while in the field. Both the autocannon and the machine gun can be reloaded and operated from the inside of the turret. The ATGMs can be reloaded from a hatch in the rear of the vehicle without the necessity for the crew to leave the vehicle (in the same manner as it is being done in the Bradley IFV.

The autocannon fires at a rate of 200 RPM for standard ammunition, and 120 RPM for ABM. It has elevation angles extending from -9° to +60°. The ATGMs can hit armor at ranges from 200 meters to 4 km when guided manually, and up to 4.5 km when in the fire and forget mode.

The ZSSW-30 fire control system made by WB Group provides full hunter-killer and killer-killer capabilities as well as superb accuracy when firing at moving targets from both moving and standing positions. The fire control system allows for shooting in every position of the turret relative to the hull in all three axes (which is not a common feature for other comparable systems). The entire firing process is highly automated as both the gunner and the commander have an auto-tracker integrated into the FCS. The ZSSW-30 FCS is net-centric as it can transfer and coordinate information between different turrets as well as communicate with various types of UAVs. Both of those features greatly increase the situational awareness and combat effectiveness of each and every vehicle.

A adicionar aos restantes helicópteros para o exército polaco estão 22 AW101 Merlin.

Defence Budget Poland ... Too good to be true?
(29 de Maio de 2023)
Citação de: Scramble
At the Defence24 Day conference, held on 24 and 25 May 2023 in Warsaw (Poland), the inspector of the Siły Powietrzne RP (Polish Air Force) Brigade General Ireneusz Nowak announced that a purchase of 22 Leonardo AW101 Merlin medium-lift helicopters is planned.

The new Merlins will work together with the newly acquired Lotnictwo Wojsk Ladowych (LWL, Polish Army Aviation) Leonardo AW149 medium multi-role battlefield support helicopters and will replace the ageing Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters.

At the same conference, the Polish Armed Forces showed several slides, including a timeline outlining their plans for the coming years. The total wish list for the Polish armed forces is huge and one might wonder how Poland is going to obtain the necessary budget for all these wishes. The stationing of American troops and the use of Polish airbases will certainly help to find space for the requested defense budget.

Concentrating on the aviation related part of the lengthy list, the following was seen on the various slides:
32x Leonardo AW149, delivery 2023-2029 (already ordered in July 2022)
22x Leonardo AW101 Merlin, delivery 2025-2031
96x Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian, delivery 2025-2035 *)
40x Sokol W-3, delivery 2024-2030
8x Kondor helicopter, type unknown, delivery 2027-2034
2x Saab 340 AEW&C, delivery 2023-2024 **)

*) it was reported that Poland has reached an agreement with the USA to receive eight interim AH-64E Apache Guardians from the US Army this year in order to more rapidly field the capability. Training of pilots and technicians will already start in the coming weeks.

**) Poland is in talks with Sweden to acquire Saab Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. According to Mariusz Błaszczak, minister of defence, the acquisition of early warning aircraft signifies a strong commitment to bolster Poland's air defence. Specific aircraft details were not disclosed, but most obviously will be the GlobalEye. However, these aircraft will not be available on short notice, therefore Sweden has offered two Saab 340AEW&C aircraft. These two aircraft were returned to Sweden in December 2020 from the United Arab Emirates after delivery of the first GlobalEyes to the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAE AF).

Another set of slides showed the upgrade and modernisation plans, including timelines, for the following aircraft:
16x Airbus Military C295M, 2024-2028
7x M-28B/PT, 2026-2027
11x M-28B1R, 2027-2031
