A Soyuz-2.1b rocket launched the Meteor-M No. 2-2 hydrometeorological satellite and 32 small satellites from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, Russia, on 5 July 2019, at 05:41 UTC (14:41 local time).

Meteor-M No. 2-2 (~2750 kg) is the fourth spacecraft in the Russian Meteor-M series of remote sensing satellites, intended to gather hydrometeorological data from a Sun-synchronous orbit.

WCSJ2019: The Moon and Beyond - Where Will We Be in 50 Years?

Here's a quick and dirty video of a panel discussion titled "The Moon and Beyond: Where Will We Be in 50 Years of Space Exploration?" The session was presented at the World Conference of Science Journalists on July 2, 2019, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Author/journalist Sarah Cruddas was the moderator, and the panelists included David Parker, head of human and robotic spaceflight at the European Space Agency; Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters; Wu Ji, former director of China's National Space Science Center; Anatoli Petrukovich, director of Russia's Space Science Research Institute; and Lori Garver, former NASA deputy administrator and CEO of the Earthrise Alliance.

WCSJ is preparing a more professional video documenting this session, and we'll link to it from this page when it's available.

There's an enormous, mysterious mass under the Moon's largest crater
Astronomers suggest it may be an asteroid that hit the Moon billions of years ago.

Buried under the largest, oldest crater on the Moon, scientists have discovered an enormous mass of dense material, possibly the remains of the asteroid that formed the crater some 4 billion years ago.

Astronomers led by Peter B. James from Baylor University discovered the hidden feature by combining data from NASA’s GRAIL lunar orbiter mission and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to look at where regions of high gravity — and therefore mass — overlap with surface features like craters. They found a giant mass weighing down the floor of the South Pole-Aitken basin by more than half a mile (0.8 kilometer).

“Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground. That’s roughly how much unexpected mass we detected,” James said in a press release.
