For decades, German arms giant Heckler & Koch has served as the gold standard for military and civilian weapons manufacturing — building revolutionary and oftentimes game-changing rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, submachine guns and pistols for a variety of customers including special operations forces, conventional infantry units and law enforcement agencies.

After a lackluster 2018, reports indicate that H&K is now struggling to keep its head above water, with the hopes that boosting sales in FY2019 buys the company at least another year to come out of the red and fix the situation it’s in.

The Tactical Wire recently reported that German business journals have already predicted the end for what was once one of the most powerful arms manufacturers in the world.

In fact, the situation is so bad that, as The Firearm Blog reported just last month, H&K employees jointly voted to increase weekly work hours without paid overtime, as well as nixed a one-off payment of 400 Euros per head for the month of July, so as to provide their beleaguered company some form of relief.

O programa -- intitulado Sistema de Combate Aéreo do Futuro (FCAS) - tinha sido lançado pelo Presidente francês, Emmanuel Macron, e pela chanceler alemã, Angela Merkel, em 2017, não se esperando que esteja pronto antes de 2040.

Os ministros da Defesa dos três países assinaram hoje o acordo para o projeto, durante o Paris Air Show (um salão internacional da aeronáutica e do espaço, em Le Bourget, nos arredores de Paris), onde se comprometem a cooperar no projeto de desenvolvimento de uma aeronave de combate da nova geração.

O Presidente francês, Emmanuel Macron, presidiu à assinatura do projeto que se enquadra na ambição de aumentar a cooperação europeia, numa altura em que os Estados Unidos, sob a liderança do Presidente Donald Trump, mostram uma relutância crescente em apoiar militarmente os seus aliados.

Os requisitos para o sistema de combate aéreo, que também incluirá drones, serão decididos em 2027 e a fase de desenvolvimento deve começar em 2030.

A ministra francesa da Defesa, Florence Parly, disse que o acordo é "uma prova concreta de que a Europa é capaz de antecipar os grandes desafios estratégicos de amanhã".

"O FCAS é um grande trunfo para enfrentar as lutas pelo poder na segunda metade do século XXI. O que está a acontecer hoje é histórico", disse a ministra.

A Dassault Aviation e a Airbus são as duas empresas aeronáuticas europeias responsáveis pela parte técnica da novo avião de caça, que substituirá o Rafale e o Eurofighters.

Os governos dos três países envolvidos não revelaram o custo do projeto, mas a agência de notícias alemã DPA estima que pode chegar a 100 mil milhões de euros.

India, Finland sign defence industry accord

India and Finland have signed an agreement to support collaboration on defence research, development, and production.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in New Delhi on 15 January by India’s Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Finnish Permanent Defence Secretary Jukka Juusti.

In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the MoU will “further defence co-operation between India and Finland”.

The MoD said that the agreement covers “production, procurement, and the research and development of defence-related equipment and industrial co-operation”. It added that under the MoU Indian and Finnish companies will look to explore opportunities to collaborate.

According to the MoD, India and Finland have been discussing the terms of defence industrial co-operation since 2018, while in 2019 Finland outlined an interest to “participate in the ‘Make in India’ vision” through a dedicated defence agreement.

Rheinmetall set three new world records during a test fire event in South Africa: A G6 howitzer with a 52-calibre gun achieved the longest range ever attained with a conventional 155 mm artillery round, 76 kilometres, while the 52-calibre gun of PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer lobbed a shell 67 kilometres, and finally, a field howitzer with a 39-calibre gun attained a range of 54 kilometres.
