Sim, o mafets tem razão. Entretanto eu corrigi antes do caro mafets responder :)

NOT A BAD DESIGN ACTUALLY.

This slightly unconventionally looking aircraft is Northrop’s submission for the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) Program. In 1981 the United States Air Force asked most of the top aerospace companies to come up with a new concept for a contemporary fighter after spotting Soviet Su-27s and MiG-29 on a reconnaissance mission. Afraid the U.S. was falling behind, they wanted to take advantage of new materials and technologies to be ahead of the curve.

Although companies from Boeing to General Dynamics entered the competition, only two designs were selected by 1986. Lockheed’s YF-22 which is now the Raptor and Northrop’s YF-23. By 1990, both of the prototypes were in the air.

After 50 successful flights of the YF-23 (called Spider, then Black Widow II and finally Gray Ghost by the way) which lasted for over 60 cumulative hours, a winner was announced. It was Lockheed’s YF-22.

The official evaluation stated that although the YF-23 was stealthier and faster, YF-22’s thrust vectoring nozzles made it much more agile and allowed it to perform much higher angles of attack.

The two prototypes of the YF-23 can be seen at the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio and Torrance Airpot, Torrance, California.

Boeing is pushing its commercial 737 airliner as a solution for the US Air Force's (USAF's) Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) recapitalisation effort, ahead of an expected service platform decision later this year.

Speaking at the site of the company's Renton production facility near Seattle, Jamie Burgess, Vice-President and Program Manager for Boeing Military Aircraft's (BMA's) Mobility Surveillance and Engagement division, said that the 737 would offer the USAF all that it needs in a replacement for the ageing Northrop Grumman E-8C JSTARS in terms of size and future growth potential.

"The size of the 737 is about right for a [command and control] C2 mission crew that would be spending upwards of 12 hours on an aircraft. It also offers tremendous growth potential in terms of power, size, weight, cooling, and aircraft performance. We think the 737-700 is the right solution for the air force's [C2 and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] C2ISR recapitalisation," Burgess said on 16 May.

The USAF currently fields 16 E-8C JSTARS platforms that it first received in the early 1990s. These are used for airborne battle management, C2, and air-to-ground ISR. The primary mission of the E-8C is to locate, classify, and track moving and stationary ground targets to support strike operations by air and ground forces.

Based on the Boeing 707 airframe, the E-8C utilises an airframe that suffers from low availability rates and which costs more than USD20,000 per hour to operate. As such, it is increasingly becoming unsustainable as a viable platform. With the USAF looking for a replacement, there are currently a number of companies vying for the effort with most offering business jet-based solutions.

For Burgess, the case for the 737 is clear with 8,000 aircraft so far delivered and 4,000 on order for commercial operators, and with military derivatives already in service in the form of the C-40 Clipper liaison aircraft; the P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft; and the E-737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft.

Washington (CNN)Retirement rumors have swirled around the US military's venerable close-air support aircraft for years, but the battle-tested, 1970's-era airplane will live to fight for at least the foreseeable future, according to the Air Force.

President Donald Trump's first full budget, which was released on Tuesday, outlines plans for the Air Force to maintain its fleet of A-10 Thunderbolts -- commonly known by their nickname the "Warthog" -- along with "Dragon Lady" U-2 spy aircraft despite previous plans to replace both aging platforms in coming years.
"There is not a retirement date for the U-2 in this budget," Maj. Gen. James Martin, the Air Force's deputy assistant secretary for budget, said during a budget briefing at the Pentagon on Tuesday. "We plan to keep that platform well into the future."

The Air Force also confirmed Tuesday that it plans to maintain the majority of its A-10 Warthogs in coming years despite past considerations of divesting the entire fleet.
An Air Force official said the A-10 fleet was being kept indefinitely, but in the future, some A-10 aircraft could be retired as other aircraft become operational.
Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain, who has worked for years to stop the Air Force's efforts to retire the A-10, said the Pentagon's decision was in part a recognition of the political landscape on Capitol Hill.
"It didn't matter what was in their budget, it wasn't going to be retired," the Arizona Republican said.
Lawmakers have wrestled with how to replace the A-10 for years -- a tall task due to the aircraft's continued proficiency despite making its first flight in 1975.
The Air Force had originally planned for its version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to replace the A-10.

The US Air Force (USAF) is to increase the number of aircraft and additional airframe hours to be included in a planned service-life extension programme (SLEP) of its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft.

While the service had previously stated that up to 300 of the service's 1,017 Block 40/42 and 50/52 C- and D-model aircraft would see their airframe hours increased from the current 8,000 hours to 12,000 hours (an increase equivalent to about eight years of operational flying), a notice posted by the service on the Federal Business Opportunities (FedBizOpps) website on 12 June says that these numbers are now to grow to 841 aircraft and 13,856 hours.

"The F-16 USAF SLEP intends to extend the aircraft's current structural service life from 8,000 equivalent flight hours (EFH) up to 13,856 EFH by modifying and/or repairing life limiting, fractural critical, and safety of flight critical structure. This effort seeks to award a contract to a vendor who can manufacture and/or procure, assemble, and deliver up to the estimated maximum quantity of 841 F-16 Block 40-52, C/D-Model SLEP modification kits necessary to extend the structural service life of these aircraft, in accordance with Government standards and specifications defined in the Technical Data Package (TDP)," the notice said.

An F-16 undergoes durability testing in Lockheed Martin's Full Scale Durability Test facility in Fort Worth, Texas, ahead of the USAF's decision to approve a service life extension of up to 300 aircraft from 8,000 hours to 12,000 hours. It has now been revealed that 841 F-16s will have their hours increased to 13,856. Source: Lockheed Martin

The F-22 Fighter Jet Restart Is Dead: Study

Sorry, Raptor fans. As many expected, the F-22 restart will never happen.

And the No. 1 reason is cost, according to a new study.

In a classified report submitted to Congress this month, the Air Force estimated it would cost approximately "$50 billion to procure 194 additional F-22s, at an estimated cost of $206 million to $216 million per aircraft," officials told Military.com on Wednesday.

"The total includes an estimate of approximately $9.9 billion for non-recurring start-up costs and $40.4 billion for aircraft procurement costs," the service said.
