Type 214 is a diesel-electric submarine developed by German company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). It features diesel propulsion with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells.
The Type 214 submarine is derived from the Type 212, but as an export variant, it lacks some of the classified technologies of its smaller predecessor, the most important of which is probably the non-magnetic steel hull, which makes the Type 212 submarine difficult to detect using a magnetic anomaly detector. Due to improvements in the pressure hull materials, the Type 214 can carry food, freshwater, and fuel for 84 days of operation.
Type 214 submarines have a length of 65 m., a beam of 6.3 m, a draught of 6 m. and are capable of reaching a depth of 400 m. Their crew is comprised of 27 people. Their weapons include mines, torpedoes, and Harpoon anti-ship missiles which are launched from eight 533 mm. tubes.
Air-independent propulsion (AIP), or air-independent power, is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel).
The Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile, developed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing Defense, Space & Security). The Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) is a land-attack variant.http://navyrecognition.com/index.php/naval-news/naval-news-archive/2021/june/10323-greek-foreign-minister-warns-germany-submarine-sale-to-turkey.html
